I. Overview:

Fitness is a universal concern. Whatever endeavors we’re in, whatever activities we do, our fitness should
always be taken into account if we are to perform them effectively and efficiently. Fitness is not just for
athletes, sportsmen and Physical Education teachers and fitness instructors. It’s also a concern of students,
parents and other members of the community. If we are to become strong and productive members of our
community, we must address the very basic requirement of such goal, the sustaining base of any endeavor we
undertake, fitness.
This module introduces you to the value of social dances and dance mixers in the enhancement of your fitness.
You will be provided with activities in modern standard dances which will in turn lead to a greater awareness of
the right foods to eat, proper ways to manage your weight and of course opportunities to maximize the
enhancement of your fitness through social dances. It is expected thereafter that such practices will be used by
you to influence the lifestyle and fitness practices of your immediate community.

II. Objectives: *Understand the nature of cheer dances

*Execute the basic steps of cheer dances

III. Lesson Proper:

Nature of the Different Dances

Dance is an expression of the body, following rhythmic patterns, and is usually

accompanied by music. From the primitive man expressing emotions in such events as birth, death, marriage,
war, among other things, dance has evolved to modern forms of social dancing. These are the different forms
of dance:

A. Traditional Dances (folk & ethnic)

B. Modern and Contemporary Dances
C. Ballroom (recreational & competitive)
D. Cheer Dance
E. Hip hop or Street Dance
F. Festival Dance

Cheerleading continues to grow all throughout the years because of its popularity. People of both sexes
and of all ages participate in this sport. The athletic and competitive approach trained cheerleaders to develop not
only lifetime fitness but also, most importantly, to each life values.

CHEER DANCE
Cheerleading and cheer dancing are two terms with similarities and differences. Cheerleading requires
precise movements because of the stunts used with the inclusion of gymnastics skills. It is an art and a sport with
a combination of dynamic movements that incites the audience.
Cheer dancing, on the other hand, is the part where the cheerleaders dance. It has chants, and provides
popular music to make the presentation more exciting and fun. Cheer dancers undergo series of exercises for body
strengthening and flexibility. Thus, safety measures are highly encouraged to prevent injuries and any form of
damage.

SOME OF THE MOTIONS USED IN CHEERLEADING

SPLIT
Split is a position in which the legs form an angle of 180 degrees and are stretched and extended in
opposite directions. It shows the flexibility of the hamstring muscles. A split is commonly used to warm up the
leg muscles to prepare for a vigorous physical activity.

The following are the two forms of split:

A. Front splits
One leg is extended in front and the other leg is at the rear of the torso
B. Side splits
Legs are extended to the left and right torso. This is commonly called straddle splits.
JUMP
To improve jumps, do these:
A. Do some stretching before and after the jumps
Make sure to execute jumps in a soft surface and wear appropriate shoes to avoid knee injuries.

The following are examples of stretching exercise:

1. Sitting straddle. Sit on the floor forming a “V” shape with the legs. Lean forward and reach
the legs without bending the knees.
2. Sitting pike. Sit on the floor placing both legs in front. Grab your feet and feel the stretch in
your hamstring muscles. Put your hand on your knees for 10 seconds and sit up again.
3. Butterfly sit. Sit on the floor and close the legs pointing outward with the together. Lean
forward, making your face near the feet. Do this for 10 seconds and sit up again.
B. Identify the types of jumps
1. Toe-touch. Arms out straight to both sides and hands are in fists, legs coming up into a full
straddle, toes pointed, and back straight.
2. Pike. Arms are straight forward and hands are in fists, legs straight out, and knees are locked.
3. Herkie left and right. Arms are opposite of the positions of the legs; the right leg s bent flat and
the right leg straight in a half-straddle position.
