5.3. FIELD MEASUREMENTS - DEEP SETTLEMENT PROBES

Installation of deep settlement probes to monitor ground movements at the bottom of the granular
backfill layers and settlement monitoring shall be implemented as described below.

The Contractor is required to install deep settlement monitoring points at the bottom of the granular
backfilling; established by precise levelling techniques, the initial level of each point has to be monitored
to an accuracy of 1mm at weekly intervals during the first 3 weeks subsequent to the backfilling
completion; then the readings shall be done every 2 weeks for a couple of months or until the settlement
may be considered exhausted. The monitoring shall be extended, with some points, 100 m outside of
the loaded area.

The settlement monitors shall be placed before start of filling with granular material and shall be
stabilized with the same material put on the base plate. The measuring tube shall be extended and
protected as the filling progresses.

The result of the level monitoring will be reported within one day of the completion of the site
measurements.

5.4. SLOPE PROTECTION

The slope of embankment shall be protected from erosion phenomena generated by wind and rain
events.

Two different categories of slopes shall be considered (Figure 5):

• Permanent slopes: total extension 2388 m

• Temporary slopes: total extension 2386 m

Figure 4 – Permanent and Temporary Slopes distribution

For permanent slopes it’s suggested the installation of a polymeric polypropylene biaxial geogrid with
high tensile strength in both longitudinal and transversal direction and which provides an ideal
interlocking system for soil. Geogrid principal characteristics are summarized as follows:

Longitudinal Tensile Strength ≥ 15 to 20 kN/m

Transversal Tensile Strength ≥ 15 to 20 kN/m

Longitudinal Elongations ≤ 16%

Transversal Elongations ≤ 13%

Vegetation could be planted as additional measure of protection.

For temporary slopes it’s suggested to provide a simple program of control and maintenance during the
time to verify the conditions of safety.

The slopes should be periodically inspected every month at least for the first 6 months, every 2 months
for the following 6 months and anytime after significant events of heavy rain or earthquake.

Remedial works shall be implemented, if required.

These criteria of maintenance shall be revised during the time, in accordance to the observed
evidences.
