Medea - Vocabulary List (Section 2)

★ These words have been taken directly from the play. Define each one.

★ Choose five of these words and use each one in a sentence that says something
meaningful about the play.

1. Arbiter: a person who has the sole or absolute power of judging or determining

2. Prevarication: the act of speaking falsely or misleadingly, a deliberate misstatement

3. Irreparable: not reparable, incapable of being rectified, remedied or made good

4. Vex: to irritate or provoke/to torment (trouble)

5. Informant: a person who informs or gives information

6. Distaste: dislike

7. Misgiving: a feeling of doubt, distrust, or apprehension

8. Woe: grievous distress, affliction, or trouble

9. Tyrant: a sovereign or person in a position of authority who uses power oppressively or


unjustly

10. Petitioners: a formally drawn request, often bearing the names of a number of those
making the request, that is addressed to a person or group of persons in authority or power,
soliciting some favour, right, mercy, or other benefits

11. Resolution: the act of resolving or determining upon an action, course of action,
method, procedure

12. Revere: to regard with respect tinged with awe; venerate

13. Recompense: to repay or to give compensation for

14. Ill-repute: the state of being held in low esteem by the public

15. Haven: any place of shelter and safety; refuge; asylum
