CHM 622 HW #4

Azaria Wagner

1. “What does it mean for a chemical event to be vertical? Why is electron ionization a vertical
event?”

The term "vertical" for a chemical event refers to electronic transitions within the atom or molecule
where an electron in a molecule goes from one electronic energy level to another electronic energy level
without any significant change in the geometry (or vibrational and rotational states) of the molecule.

Electron ionization is considered a vertical event because it involves an electronic transition in a

molecule where an incoming high-energy electron is used to ionize the molecule and eject one or more
electrons from the molecule. This transition is primarily electronic, involving the movement of electrons
between different electronic energy states, so it doesn't cause substantial changes in the geometry (or
vibrational and rotational states) of the molecule even though a cation is being formed.
