Summary of “Global Migration”

In the text “Global Migration” by Kenneth J. Pakeham, Jo McEntire and Jessica Williams; the
authors discuss about the causes, positive and negative effects of migration all over the world. First of all,
they point out the fact that the number of immigrants is rising. They state that immigrants change
countries for various causes and purposes but they have one thing in common and that is
pursuing better life standards than they had in their homeland. Furthermore, they discuss the
reason why immigration has become such a big issue and that is because it has lots of effects on
immigrant’s home and host countries. The authors state that immigration sometimes has good
effects for the hosting countries since they lack workers every now and then. In
addition to that, it also has positive impacts on immigrant’s home countries because most
workers send some of the money they earned to their family back home. This also has a huge positive
impact on the economy of their homeland. In spite of these positive outcomes, migration also
has negative consequences, such as immigrants and locals having to live with cultural
differences and some economic troubles for the immigrants. Then, the authors maintain
explaining that migration has the biggest effects on immigrants’ home countries because these
countries lose their valuable workers. In addition to that, since they spend more time in another
country, more chances in that country come along their way, and their ratio of staying there
becomes higher. Finally, the authors conclude by stressing the significance of international
migration; which has financial, diplomatic, and cultural outcomes for every country in the world.
