MAGNETISM

1. Two identical bar magnets lie next to one another on a table. Sketch the magnetic field
lines if the north poles are at the same end.

2. A wire of length 0.655 m carries a current of 21.0 A. In the presence of a 0.470 T magnetic
field, the wire experiences a force of 5.46 N. What is the angle between the wire and the
magnetic field?

3. A straight wire with a length of 0.65 m and mass of 75 g is placed in a uniform magnetic
field of 1.62 T. If the current flowing in the wire is perpendicular to the magnetic field,

4. From Figure 1, a wire carrying a 30 A current has a length 12 cm between the pole faces of
a magnet at an angle 60º. The magnetic field is approximately uniform at 0.90 T. We

5. What is the force per meter of length on a straight wire carrying a 9.40 A current when
perpendicular to a 0.90 T uniform magnetic field?

6. Calculate the magnitude of the magnetic force on a 240 m length of wire stretched between
two towers and carrying a 150 A current. The Earth’s magnetic field of 5.0 × 10-5 T makes

a) the velocity of the proton is perpendicular to the magnetic field.

experiences a 1.90 × 10-3 N force. Determine:

Current IA = 6 A is out of the page and IB = 8 A is into the page. Find the magnitude of the
magnetic field halfway between the two wires.

Two long, parallel, vertical wires X and Y are 16 cm apart as shown in Figure 5. Both
wires carry current upwards. The current in X and Y are 3.0 A and 2.0 A respectively.
a) Compute the force on each meter length of the wire.
b) There is a neutral point between the two wires where the resultant magnetic field is
zero. How far is this point from wire X?
