FIGURE 1

An electric wire in the wall of a building carries a DC current of 25 A vertically

upward as shown in FIGURE 1. What is the magnitude and direction of the
magnetic field due to this current at point P.

(b)

FIGURE 2

Two parallel straight wires are placed 10 cm apart from each other. Both wires
carry currents in opposite directions. Current 𝐼1 = 5.0 A is into the page, while
current 𝐼2 = 7.0 A is out of the page as shown in FIGURE 2.
(i) Determine the magnitude of the resultant magnetic field at midpoint M.
(ii) Sketch the resultant magnetic field at midpoint M and state its direction.

3 (a) When the current through a circular loop is 6.0 A, the magnetic field at its centre is
2.0 × 10−4 T. What is the radius of the loop?

(b) A circular coil has 15 turns and a diameter of 45.0 cm. If the magnetic field strength
at the centre of the coil is 8.00 × 10−4 T, find the current flowing in the coil.

4 (a) Determine the magnetic field produced at the center of a solenoid of length 80.0 cm
which has 360 turns and the current passing through it is 15.0 A.

(b) A wire that carries a constant current of 0.900 A is formed into a solenoid of length
300 mm. The strength of the magnetic field at the end of the solenoid is measured
to be 7.70 × 10−4 T. Calculate the number of turns used to form the solenoid.

enters perpendicular into a uniform magnetic field of 3.50 mT directed into the page.
Determine the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force on the electron.
(Given 𝑒 = 1.60 × 10−19 C)

(b) An electron is travelling through a uniform magnetic field of 1.10 T. A force of

4.91 × 10−15 N is acting on the electron. Determine the magnitude of the velocity
of the electron if it is moving at an angle of 40° to the field.
(Given 𝑒 = 1.60 × 10−19 C)

FIGURE 3 shows a proton with a speed, 𝑣 = 2.2 × 106 m s−1 entering a region of a
uniform magnetic field between two plates. The plates are separated by a distance,
𝑑 = 0.18 m.
(a) Determine the direction of the magnetic force on the proton when it reaches point P.
(b) Calculate the minimum magnitude of the magnetic field so that the proton does not
hit the opposite plate.
(Given 𝑚p = 1.672 × 10−27 kg ; 𝑒 = 1.60 × 10−19 C)

7 (a) A straight wire of length 5.00 cm, carrying a current of 8.60 A, is placed in a
uniform magnetic field of 3.40 × 10−2 T. The wire is at an angle of 30° to the
magnetic field. Calculate the magnitude of the magnetic force acting on the wire.

(b) A 40 m electric cable carries a current of 28 A from east to west. The earth magnetic
field is 50 μT, horizontal and directed from south to north. Determine the magnitude
and direction of the magnetic force on the cable.

carrying wires, as shown in FIGURE 4. The rod is perpendicular to a uniform magnetic
field of 0.600 T. Determine the magnitude and direction of the electric current to keep the
copper rod fixed and stay horizontal.

and are separated by 4.00 cm. What is the magnitude of the force per unit length acting
between the wires if conductor A has a current of 2.50 A and conductor B has a current of
1.50 A? Is the force attractive or repulsive?
