Introduction
In this ThoughtLab you will examine and interpret the data for an experiment that
studied the effect of [hydrochloric acid] on the rate of the reaction
The method of initial rates was used. That is, a small quantity of Mg was reacted with
excess HCl(aq) of varying concentration. The time for this quantity of Mg to completely
react was recorded. You can convert this reaction time to an initial rate of the reaction.
Refer to your textbook or class notes for a refresher on the method of initial rates.
Since we will use a piece of Mg of constant size in all trials, we can reduce eq’n 1 to

fractions are possible.
Purpose
To determine the value of the exponent (q) in the equation
rate = kobserved[HCl]q by measuring the time for a small piece of Mg to react.

How does the Rate of a Reaction Depend on Concentration?
1. Prove that the HCl solutions used in this experiment, even in the most dilute
solution used, is in large excess compared to the amount of magnesium reacted.

2. a) In what way will the rate of this reaction depend on [HCl] if q = 0? (See eq’n 2
above.) Include a sketch of rate (y-axis) versus [HCl] (x-axis). Label the axes;

b) If rate = kobs[HCl]1, sketch a graph of rate versus [HCl], as above. {I, /2}
b) Enter the above data into EXCEL. Add a final column where you calculate the
initial rate of the reaction (include proper units). Plot graphs as outlined in
question 2. In each case, have EXCEL determine the equation of the best fit
straight line and the corresponding R2 value. Attach your graphs, along with the
reasoning you used to arrive at a value of “q” kobs in eq’n 2.

4. a) How do you expect the value for “q” and kobs to be affected if an equivalent
mass of powdered magnesium were used in place of magnesium ribbon? {C, /2}
b) Explain why cutting a piece of magnesium ribbon in half with a pair of scissors
has essentially no effect on the time of the reaction. Including a diagram in your
