Answer the following questions.

1. (a) Balance the equation and use oxidation numbers to decide whether the following is a
redox reaction. If so, then identify the oxidizing agent and the reducing agent. (1pts)
NCl3(l) + 3H2O(l) → NH3(aq) + HOCl(aq)
H2S(g) + O2(g) → SO2(g) + H2O(g)
(b) Balance the chemical equations and classify the following redox reaction as combustion,
decomposition, displacement or disproportionation reaction. (1pts)
- - -
(i) Cl2 (g) + OH (aq)→Cl (aq) + ClO (aq) +H2O
(ii) Mg(s) +AgNO3(s)→Mg(NO3)2 (ag)+ Ag(s)
(iii) CuO + H2(g)→ Cu(s) +H2O(l)

(c) Describe exothermic and endothermic process with diagram. (1pts)

2. The following molecular views show reactant solutions for a precipitation reaction (with
H2O molecules omitted for clarity). (3pts)
(a) Which compound is dissolved in beaker A: Ag2SO4, MgBr2, Na2SO4, NaI ?
(b) Which compound is dissolved in beaker B: NaNO3, BaSO4, Ca(NO3)2 and CaF2 ?

(c) Name the precipitate and spectator ions when solutions A and B are mixed. Write the
balanced molecular, total ionic and net ion equation for this process.
3. Answer the following questions. 1.5x4=6

(a) How many Ca atoms are in 9.8 g of Ca?

(b) What amount (mol) of each ion is in 88.0 mL of 0.94 M ferric chloride (FeCl 3)?
(c) What volume of a 1.54M NaOH solution is required to titrate 90.00 mL of a 2.50M
H2SO4 solution?
(d) A 27.7-g sample of the radiator coolant ethylene glycol releases 688 J of heat. What was
the initial temperature of the sample if the final temperature is 32.5°C (c of ethylene
glycol=2.42 J/g.°C)?

Answer the following math Problems (No. 4 – No. 7).

4. Sorbic acid is added to food as a mold inhibitor. Its composition is 64.3% C, 7.2% H, and
28.5% O,and its molecular mass is 112 amu. What is its molecular formula? (2pts)

5. Silicon carbide (SiC) is an important ceramic material made by reacting sand (silicon
dioxide, SiO2) with powdered carbon at a high temperature. Carbon monoxide is also
formed. When 90.0 kg of sand is processed, 55.4 kg of SiC is recovered. What is the percent
yield of SiC from this process? (2 pts)

6. 20.0-g block of iron at 50.0 °C and a 20.0 g block of aluminum at 45.0 °C are placed in
contact with each other. (2 pts)

Assume that heat is only transferred between the two blocks.

(a) Draw an arrow indicating the heat flow between the blocks.
(b) What is the sign of qsys for the aluminum when the blocks first come into contact?
(c) What will you observe when qsys for the iron is zero?
(d) Estimate the temperature of the Al and Fe blocks when q sys of the iron equals qsys of the
aluminum.
7. Write a balanced equation for the reaction depicted below: (2 pts)

many grams of Si-containing product form?
