1.0 INTRODUCTION TO SIWES

Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a skill acquisition programme

established by ITF in 1973 to enable students to acquire practical knowledge of theoretical work
taught in their respective areas of specialization. The Student Industrial Work Experience
Scheme (SIWES) started in 1974 with 748 students from 11 institutions of higher learning
participating. By 1978, the scope of participating in the scheme had increase to about 5,000
students from 32 institutions. SIWES is accepted skill training program, which forms part of the
approved minimum academic standard in the various degree program for all the Nigerian
universities. It is an effort to bridge the gap existing between theory and practice of engineering
and technology, science, agriculture, medical, management and other professional educational
program in the Nigerian tertiary institutions. It is aimed at exposing students to machines and
equipment, professional work method and way of safe-guarding the work areas and workers in
industries and other organization. The scheme is a tripartite program involving the students, the
universities and the industry (employer of labor). It is funded by the Federal government of
Nigeria and jointly coordinated by Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the National Universities
Commission (NUC). Participation in SIWES has become a necessary pre-condition for the award
of diploma and degree certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions of higher learning in
the country, in accordance with the education policy of government. The Student Industrial
Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is now made a compulsory exercise carried out by the entire
300level and 400level students across the country. This takes place during the 2nd semester of the
3rd and 4th year in the school for universities, to enhance and help student in building individual
practically and furthermore theoretically.

1.1 SCOPE OF SIWES

The SIWES programme is aimed at exposing students to industrial culture so as to provide them
with opportunity to practice their skills. During the course of the training program, the students
are provided with useful information, the basic principles and techniques involved in the
profession. With all these ideas and experience, the student will be able to face challenges
eventually.

It has been made by Olabisi Onabanjo University, Department of chemical sciences for her
students at 300L to go through this scheme for a period of 24 weeks. I was privileged to be
attached to Esosa Investments LTD at No 40, Yaya Crescent Olodi Apapa, Ajeromi Ifelodun,
Lagos state.

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a program designed for
undergraduate in Nigerian universities, colleges of education and polytechnics. The objectives
are to:

 Provide an avenue for students in institutions of higher learning to acquire industrial

skills and experiences in their course of study.
 To expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and
machineries that may not be available in their educational environment.
 To provide students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in work
situations, by combining theoretical knowledge with practical skill acquired during the
training.
 Make the transition from the university to the world of work easier, and thus enhance
students’ contacts for later job placements.
 Prepare the students for the industrial work situation they are likely to meet after
graduation.
 To provide each student opportunity for practical experience outside the university
through attachment to industrial establishments/companies, research stations.
 Enlist and strengthens employers involvement in the entire educational process of
preparing university graduates for employment in industry.
1.2.1 BENEFITS TO THE STUDENTS

The Industrial attachment programme seeks to the student a good knowledge of the lectures
he/she has had in classes, it also increases the possibility of meeting students from other schools
which enhance the relationship between schools and industries based on trust of the type of
students such school produces.

 MIXING: Weighing and measuring of ingredients are very good as inaccurate

measurement could lead to undesirable and low quality of products. Mixing helps to
achieve consistency and homogeneity of the ingredients. In the production of Naga
sausage roll, 50g of flour is mixed with a measured amount of sugar, salt, sorbic acid,
yeast and some amount of water (20g) in a mixer for about 15mins. The dough mixer is
used for mixing flour and other ingredients for 15mins to form dough used in the
production of naga sausage roll.
 Milling: this is the process where the mixed product is been mill, it will be placed on
milling machine where the dough will be milled
 Folding: The pastry be rolled and filled with beef sausage and then cutting dough sheet to
small pieces, the thickness ad size of finished product can be adjusted. The Naga sausage
dough milling are cut into a specific shape and conveyed to the tray.
 Arranging: The milled dough is been arranged into tray and fixed in trolley before been
put in the oven for baking.
 Baking: Baking is a treatment process that involves the heating of the Naga dough in the
oven at a certain regulated temperature. Temperature of the oven is about 170-180C. This
baking process makes the product have a crunchy taste while eating. At this stage, the
moisture in the products are being dried and ready to consume

2.2.2 PACKAGING: The products are finally packed into bags made of polypropylene which
are resistant to moisture. They are tightly tied and transferred to the packaging section. Here,
finished products are wrapped and packaged before sending to the warehouse for storage. The
finished products are wrapped with a packaging film through an automated packaging machine.
Different color of packaging film for different product. Some tests are carried out on the
packaging films e.g thickness, GSM, dimensions to ensure it meets required standard before
being used. The Packaging machine can automatically complete bag making, measuring, filing,
inflating, counting, sealing, code printing, stopping in certain quantity and cutting. They are later
packed manually in different quantities using polythene bags and shipped to the warehouse for
storage.

2.3 QUALITY CONTROL

Quality Control (QC) is a procedure or set of procedures intended to ensure that a manufactured
product or preformed service adheres to a defined set of quality criteria or meets the
requirements of the customer. QC is similar to, but not identical with, quality assurance (QA).
While QA refers to the confirmation that specified requirements have been met by a product or
service, QC refers to the actual inspection of these elements. The QC department is one of the
important department of food industry. It is well quipped as various tests are performed there.
QCD receives the sample before raw and packaging materials enters to the store. Required
analysis are carried out properly in lab to ensure whether it meets the standard or not. Each
production process is monitored well with in-line testing equipment which is constantly
supervised. In-process checks are also carried out at intervals. Similarly, finished products are
sent to QCD to measure the quality and to ensure the products meets the required standard. The
Lab department is divided into two sections:

1. CHEMICAL LABORATORY SECTION: This section carries out series of tests on raw
materials, packaging materials, finished products and in-line process.

2. MICROBIOLOGY LABORATORY SECTION: This section carries out microbial analysis

like yeast and mold, E.coli on raw materials and finished products.

The QCD has great role from the reception of raw materials up to dispatch of finished goods.
There are various quality control analysis carried out in Esosa Investment limited.

CHAPTER THRE

CONCLUSION, EXPERIENCE GAINED AND RECOMMENDATION

3.1 CONCLUSION

Industrial training programme is a good and commendable one as it exposes students to practical
knowledge of school works. My industrial training programme at Esosa Investment Limited.
was a myriad of exposure and preparation for reality of my profession. This programme made
me to be familiar with the industrial working environment and also built up confidence to tackle
problems regarding quality and production issues arising in industry. However, this industrial
training reflected my theoretical studies and made me clear about processing quality control,
managerial structure and mass handling. Even got the chance to understand that behind every
successful organization everyone related to that organization whether they are from low level or
high post are equally important and working in team do matter for industry upliftment.

Finally, my experience cannot be matched with anything except the confidence I presently have
to go into the community and the world at large.

3.2 EXPERIENCE GAINED

I learnt how to produce sausage roll, bacon, ham and beef sausage and also gained experience in
handling machineries in the factory. I was exposed to human relations and personnel
management.

3.3 RECOMMENDATIONS

Having successfully completed my SIWES programme, the following are my recommendations

towards the betterment of the programme.

1) Proper placement of the student for such program by the industrial training department of
each institution through creating a strong alliance with different companies.
2) The program coordinator from the industrial training fund in the various states should
ensure that the students concerned are placed in the relevant department in the
organization.
3) Improvement of allowance and free transport services for student attached to the various
organization.
4) Students should be made to realize that SIWES is not a holiday but a course study
designed to enhance their relevance production skills and employ ability after graduation.
5) The code of conduct should be strictly adhered to by students participating in SIWES.
