REPORT SUBMISSION:
Introduction
Particle size analysis is a crucial procedure in understanding the
distribution of particle sizes within a given material. This report presents
the results of a particle size analysis conducted on using the Sieve
Analysis method. The objective of this analysis is to determine the
particle size distribution and provide valuable insights into the
characteristics of the material this information is used to classify the soil
and to predict its behavior. The two methods generally used to find the
grain size distribution are:
EQUIPMENT
 Stack of sieves with a cover,
 Mortar and pestle or a mechanical soil pulverized
 Balance, sensitive to 0.1 g
 Oven
 Mechanical sieve shaker
 Brush
Procedure
A. Sample Preparation
1. Obtain a representative oven-dried soil sample.
2. Pulverize the soil sample as finely as possible, using a mortar and
pestle or a mechanical soil pulverizer.
3. Obtain a soil sample of about 500 g and determine its mass W0 (g)

B. Sieve Analysis
1. Stack the sieves so that those with larger openings (lower numbers) are
placed above those with smaller openings (higher numbers). Place a pan
under the last sieve
2. Make sure the sieves are clean, if soil particles are stuck in the openings, use
a brush to poke them out.
1. Weighing Procedure: Weigh the pan and all of the sieves separately.
Pour the soil from above into the stack of sieves and place the cover on
it. Put the stack in the sieve shaker, affix the clamps, set a timer for 10
to 15 minutes, and start the shaker. Stop the sieve shaker and measure
the mass of each sieve and retained soil.

Discussion:
1-What the main of the average diameter length?
-It involves determining the average particle diameter based on both
the weight and diameter of all particles present in the sample.
2-the sample dry in an oven at temperature of 110 + - 5°c,Why?
-Due to the water content in the sample, optimal accuracy is achieved
by drying it at a specific temperature, as this temperature is highly
effective in removing water thoroughly.
3-What is the granular structures of particles?
-Clay particles are plate-like, providing high water retention. Silt has a
fine, powder-like texture, balancing retention and drainage. Sand
particles are granular, allowing good drainage with lower water
retention. The mix of these in soil determines its texture and
properties.
The sample consist of gravel and sand particle.
4-Discuss the results and suggestion about the experience and what the
application of it in petroleum industry.
-The results of a particle size analysis test provide crucial insights into
the distribution of particle sizes within a sample. In the context of the
petroleum industry, understanding particle size is vital for various
applications. In the petroleum industry, this data is crucial for
optimizing drilling fluids, enhancing wellbore stability, and ensuring
efficient refining processes, especially in catalyst performance. The
experience gained aids decision-making, contributing to operational
efficiency and productivity.
5-What factors can influence the outcomes of a particle size analysis
test?
