DRUG PLANTS OVERVIEW

Drug plants refer to plants that contain naturally
occurring substances or chemicals that have
psychoactive or medicinal properties. These plants
are often used to produce drugs or medications for
various purposes.

Some examples of drug plants include:

1) Cannabis (Cannabis sativa): The marijuana plant
contains compounds called cannabinoids, including
THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), which has
psychoactive effects. Cannabis is used recreationally
and medicinally in some countries.

2)Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum): Opium

poppies produce latex that contains alkaloids such as
morphine and codeine. These compounds are used to
produce pain-relieving medications, such as opioid
analgesics.

3)Coca plant (Erythroxylon coca): The leaves of the

coca plant contain alkaloids, including cocaine. Coca
leaves have been traditionally used in South America
for their stimulant effects. However, the extraction
and use of cocaine is illegal in most countries due to
its addictive and harmful properties.
It is important to note that the cultivation, possession, and use
of many drug plants are regulated or illegal in numerous
countries. This information is provided for educational purposes

SPECIMENS IN HERBARIUM-
1)KUSH (CANNABIS INDICA)- The term "Kush" is
often used to refer to a particular variety of cannabis
plant. "Kush" strains are known for their unique
characteristics, including dense buds, potent effects,
and distinct aromas. The origins of the Kush strain
can be traced back to the Hindu Kush Mountain
range, which spans across Afghanistan, Pakistan, and
parts of India.

Kush strains are typically indica-dominant, meaning

they tend to have relaxing and sedating effects. They
are often favored by individuals seeking relief from
pain, insomnia, and stress. Some popular Kush strains
include OG Kush, Hindu Kush, Bubba Kush, and
Master Kush.
2)DATURA- Datura, also known as Jimsonweed or
Devil's trumpet, is a plant belonging to the genus
Datura. It is considered a drug plant due to its potent
psychoactive properties. The plant contains various
alkaloids, including scopolamine, hyoscyamine, and
atropine, which have hallucinogenic and deliriant
effects.
