The Legend of Sidoarjo's Eggplant Princess

Once upon a time, during the Majapahit Kingdom, there lived a small kingdom. This
kingdom was called the Terung Kingdom, which was led by a very powerful King named
Raja Husein. He had a daughter named Raden Ayu, Putri Sundari Cempokowati or commonly
known as Raden Ayu Putri Terung. Looking for new territories to expand his kingdom.
Then, he found a very dense forest. With his supernatural powers, the jungle was completely
cleared which is now known as Sidoarjo Regency.

Another time the princess forgot to bring a dagger to cut the flowers she sold.
Suddenly in front of him there was a handsome and brave young man. The young man’s
name was Raden Rahman. “Hmmm... this flower smells so good. Can I buy a pack of
flowers from you, Princess?” Raden Rahman asked Putri Terung. “Sorry but I forgot to bring
my dagger, did you bring a dagger?” answered the princess while asking Raden Rahman
again. “Yes, please, as long as you never carry the dagger on your lap.” Raden Rahman
answered while explaining the taboo. While he was busy cutting flowers, the princess forgot
Raden Rahman’s prohibition not to carry the dagger.

At that moment, the dagger disappeared, accompanied by the disappearance of Raden

Rahman. Several months later, when King Husein returned to the kingdom, Princess Terung’s
stomach was visible, enlarged like a pregnant woman. How shocked the king was to see his
daughter’s condition. “Oh my God... what happened to my child? Who got you pregnant,
kid?” For a few moments the king was silent and pondered what had happened, “O Lord,
what sin has your servant committed?” shouted the king. “Please forgive me, Father, I also
don’t know why I became like this? At first I only borrowed a knife from a young man on the
condition that I couldn’t carry the knife. But I forgot and I carried it. “Instantly the knife and
the young man disappeared somewhere.” Answered Princess Eggplant.

The king, who initially started to melt and almost forgave his son, suddenly changed
his mind after hearing the words of the royal ladies who continued to tease the princess. “Yes,
Lord, how can a woman become pregnant without having a relationship with a man? “That
child of disgrace, Your Majesty, we must get rid of it before this disgrace spreads throughout
the country!” Finally the king punished the princess. “I will kill you with my heirloom!” But
before Princess Terung was killed, she said something to the king. “Father, I am willing to
kill you. “But if my blood is white and smells good, that’s a sign that I’m still pure and I’m
innocent, Father. And if my blood is red and smells fishy, that’s a sign that I’m not pure and
I’m guilty, Father.” Immediately the king thrust a keris into his body. The princess.

What a surprise after seeing white blood that smelled fragrant. This indicates that the
princess is still pure. King Husein was very devastated and regretted having killed his own
child. Not long after, an old kyai came and said, “This princess’s fate is truly unfortunate, she
was pregnant but was killed before she gave birth to her baby. I don’t know, we don’t know
what’s in the princess’s stomach? Is it a snake? Heirloom? Or a human baby?” For this
reason, Raden Ayu Putri Sundari Cempokowati will be known as Raden Ayu Putri Oncat
Tondo Wurung. Since then, if there is a Terung descendant who is about to give birth, gets
married, and before being circumcised, they must provide an offering in the form of a
tumpeng of yellow rice which will be distributed to local residents to remember and pray for
the princess’s body.
