3 Figure 8.1 shows a person pushing a wheelbarrow up a ramp.

Figure 8.1

The person pushes the wheelbarrow with a force of 200 N in a direction parallel to the ramp.
The ramp is 3.2 m long and rises through a vertical height of 1.3 m.
a Calculate the work done by the person pushing the wheelbarrow up the ramp. [3]

b The total mass of the wheelbarrow and load is 46 kg.
Calculate the work required to lift the wheelbarrow and load through the same vertical height
as the ramp. [3]

4 A learner of mass 75 kg walks upstairs. While going up the stairs, the learner’s centre of mass rises
through a vertical height of 11 m. The time taken by the learner to walk up the stairs is 35 s.
a Calculate the average power developed by the learner while walking up the stairs. [6]

5 A game called tetherball (swingball) uses a tennis ball attached to a vertical pole with a string. When a
player hits the tennis ball, the tennis ball travels around the pole in a circle as shown in Figure 8.2.

Figure 8.2

The force of tension, T in the string keeps the tennis ball moving in a circle.
When the radius of the circle stays the same, the force, T does no work on the ball.
Explain why. [2]

6 A trolley of mass 1.5 kg is moving with a speed of 0.2 m/s towards a stopper pad on a spring as shown
in Figure 8.3.

Figure 8.3

The trolley hits the stopper pad and compresses the spring. The trolley comes to rest with the
spring compressed.
Calculate the work done by the spring in bringing the trolley to rest. [4]
