Show that it is an equivalence relation.

16. Given a non-empty set X . Relation S is defined on P(X) such that for A , B ∈ P(X) , (A,B) ∈ S
iff A is a subset of B . Check whether S is reflexive, symmetric and transitive.
17. Write the smallest equivalence relation on set A = { 1,2,3}. How many equivalence relations
can be defined on A , which contain the ordered pair (1,2) ?
18. How many relations can be defined on set A = {a , b , c} which are reflexive, symmetric but
not transitive ?
19 R is a relation defined on set NxN such that (a,b) R (c,d) if & only if a + d = b + c. Show
that it is an equivalence relation. Find also the equivalence class of (2 , 6) i.e. [(2,6)].
20. Show that the function f: R → (– 1 , 1} defined by f(x) = x/( 1 + |x| ) is bijective.
