QUESTION 1: READING COMPREHENSION (15 marks)

Read the text below and answer the questions that follow.

Christmas in South Africa

1 Christmas is an annual festival celebrating the birth of Jesus. It is

observed on the 25th of December by billions of people around the
world. The decorations, markets and Christmas dinner help you get
into the Christmas spirit.

2 The annual preparations for the celebration of Christmas begin in

advance. You will find schools empty. Shops and business institutions also post notes on
their doors saying they’re closed for the holidays.

3 One big difference is that in South Africa, Christmas is in the middle of summer. Flowers
are blooming and the sun is shining. In South Africa there is no snow during Christmas
time, instead, it is hot.

4 Many churches hold services on Christmas morning. Christmas Eve celebrations include
Carols by Candlelight. Most families have a Christmas tree in a corner, complete with gifts
for the children. Christmas Day is a day of delicious food, with a lively exchange and
enjoyment of gifts.

5 Happy Christmas and Merry Christmas messages are sent to everyone through letters,
cards, cell phones, radios, and televisions.

Do not share your holiday plans with anyone on social networks such as Facebook or
Instagram. Thieves can gain access through status updates and posts.

Don’t give your home address to any strangers.

Ask permission from your parents when you want to visit your friends. Arrange to be fetched
and dropped off.

If you are at the mall, always stay in groups. If someone tries to get you to leave with them,
scream and make the people around you aware of what is happening.
