Temple Street Night Market!

1 ______________________________ 
Temple Street Night Market is a bustling outdoor market with a great atmosphere, but sadly the
products didn’t live up to my expectations. A lot of the trinkets seemed alike. In this day and age,
we should consume less and avoid buying junk that can be easily broken or lost!

5 2 ______________________________ 

Temple Street Night Market is the best place in the city to spend the evening. It’s what Hong Kong
is all about! People here who complain about haggling with street vendors are missing the whole
point. That’s part of the culture (and the fun) of this place.

3 ______________________________ 
10 Personally, I couldn’t care less about the electronics, handbags and children’s toys on offer at the
Temple Street Night Market. For me, it’s all about the food! The most delicious dumplings, noodles
or pork ribs are on offer. Forget about fancy restaurants … this is where you can get the tastiest
food in HK. Plus, it is where you can find the city’s energetic nightlife.

Text 2 (17 marks)
Read the following article.

Rising fear in island nations

1 Maha Shareef leads me through the densely-populated streets of Malé, the capital city of the
island nation of the Maldives. Shareef considers herself Maldivian to her core. Her family history
goes back to countless generations, and yet, she knows that she may not be able to live there
forever. Her children and grandchildren are unlikely to call this place their home.
5 2 ‘In one hundred years, my entire culture and history could be under water,’ she says. About
1,200 islands make up the Maldives, and the highest elevation is just 2.4 metres above sea level.
Malé, where Shareef works for the national government, is already surrounded by walls intended
in order to protect them from the ocean water.

3 Rising sea levels is a major issue of climate change. Coastal cities and island nations are both
10 at risk. However, while people in coastal cities can move further inland, those who live in island
nations have nowhere to escape. Their cultures and unique ways of life could be lost soon.
A global temperature increase of just two degrees, which could easily hit within the century, could
lead to sea level rises of up to four metres. This is due to two factors. First, there will be more
water from the melting polar ice caps. The volume of water also increases as it rises to a higher
15 temperature. Therefore, the total volume of the ocean is larger.

4 The Maldives is not the only island nation to feel the effects of rising sea levels. The Marshall
Islands, Palau and Micronesia are also at risk. Even for island nations with higher elevations, such
as Fiji, which has peaks as high as 4,000 metres above sea level, the effects of climate change can
be devastating. First of all, there is the loss of valuable farming land. Second, salt water can
20 penetrate underground fresh water supplies, leaving people and crops without sufficient drinking
water. A third problem is severe storms. Warmer temperatures lead to more typhoons and
hurricanes, and island residents are stuck directly in their destructive paths. Ocean acidification
also harms local coral reefs and shellfish species. This affects food supplies in island nations.
5 Shareef explains that she sometimes has strong feelings towards people in more industrialized
25 nations. ‘People in the United States, China and the European Union are pumping carbon dioxide
into the atmosphere. They’re consuming at an alarming rate. But who’s paying the real price? It’s
us.’ Shareef says that she feels forgotten. ‘Our country is doing everything it can to survive. Who
should be largely responsible for climate change? I want them to come and see what is happening
here.’

30 6 Over 400,000 people live in the Maldives. The government is investing in expensive solutions
to combat the effects of rising sea levels. However, Maldivians know that they may be fighting a
losing battle. It will take radical solutions to save their culture and way of life.
