Self-assessment is as important to students as they are to professionals. Since this

is practiced in most organizations, it’s necessary you learn to do it properly. Aside it
being a part of formal employee appraisal, it is essential for every professional’s
personal development. Some general benefits of self-assessment are:

 Self-assessment makes you sure and confident about your capabilities. It

eliminates or reduces work related fear and uncertainty.

 It enables the employee to assess himself, make corrections quickly and improve
on his abilities. In other words, it enhances capacity building.

 It helps people in selecting occupations or educational programs that are best

suited for them. For instance; if you find out that you are an unfriendly or
antisocial person, you can tell that a career in marketing wouldn’t be the best
option for you.

 Self-assessment provides direction for training. Once you know what your
strengths and weaknesses are, you can choose the right tutor or training that
best fits your career needs.

 It helps the individual to write resumes and cover letters that are specific about
his abilities and highlight his special qualities. This makes your cover letter a
stand out among the others.

Simple steps to develop your Self-Assessment:

1. Be specific Define one clear example of an important achievement, an area for

improvement or a demonstration of company core values. Focus on how you
approached the situation and achieved your outcome.

2. Make connections to organizational goals

3. Use the STAR method The STAR method is a simple way to construct your self
evaluation examples. Start by describing a Situation or Task, then
the Action you took to accomplish the goal, and finally outline
the Results achieved. This gives you a clear description of how you contributed
to an important area and what impact the final outcome had.

4. Give evidence - Always back up your examples with evidence. It's much more
effective to give concrete documentation, and if you're tracking your goals
throughout the year you'll have an easy-to-access record of exactly what took
place. You should also incorporate the feedback you've received from peers,
colleagues and clients

5. Reference your job description - Going back to your job description is a great
reference for exactly what you're expected to deliver in your role and what
aspects of your work is most impactful to the organization. It'll give you a useful
framework to prompt you on which achievements you should highlight, and what
skills you already demonstrate or need to work on further.

6. 360-degree feedback is a process where a given reviewee gets inputs on her

performance (or other criteria such as behaviors, competencies and results
achieved) from a number of different people that bear different working
relationships with the reviewee (for example, they can be direct reports,
manager, peers and other internal customers). The goal is to provide de
reviewee with rich input on how she can improve, and usually, these results
serve no other purpose within the company.

7. Define next steps –

Step 1: S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-
Based.)
Step 2: Define Your Short and Long-term Goals
(Short-term goals are generally objectives to be completed in a year or
less - An intermediate goal is a plan that you aim to achieve within one to
five years - Long-term goals are generally five, ten or even more years
away).
Step 3: Needs vs Wants (prioritizing your goals)

Personal Balanced Scorecard

Applying the personal balanced scorecard:

The personal balanced scorecard, requires individuals to translate their personal
mission into understandable performance metrics, to effectively communicate four major
stakeholder perspectives:
• Change Management: What personal changes and processes do I need to
implement in order to meet external demands?
• Relationship Management: How am I being evaluated by everyone? (Stakeholders)
• Learning/Growth: What do I need to do to become and remain competitive?
• Financial Growth: To succeed financially, what processes and changes do I have to
implement?
From these four perspectives; measures and personal goals are integrated into a
strategy map. This diagram reflects the cause and effect relationship between strategic
objectives within the four perspectives. At the core of the strategy map is learning and
growth. The personal growth and development is a catalyst for the performance of the
person and has a direct influence on the success of internal processes. An educated
and well-trained person can execute more sophisticated processes which in turn
improve personal efficiency, directly influencing the perspective of the stakeholders.

Setting Your Goals

Step 1: Understand and decide upon your goals - Set your long term and short
term goals. *

Goals could be Long Term (What needs to be achieved) and Short Term (How to
achieve).
Long term goals may be understood as something that could be an end result. The
usual timeframe for a
long term goal could be 10 years or longer. Short-term goals are generally objectives to
be completed in
a year or less. These could be understood as the means for achieving the long term
goals.

Step 2: The short term goals must meet the criteria SMART
Specific individuals know what exactly is to be achieved
Measurable proposed goals can be tracked and reviewed
Attainable goals may be difficult but not unreasonable
Realistic* goals must support the vision of the organization
Time-bound goals are to be achieved within a stated time.
Step 3: Prioritize your Goals
Distinguish between what is your need and want and accordingly decide your priority

Please read carefully the following Important Notes and instructions:

YOUR TASK
