BASKETBALL

Basketball is a team sport that is typically played indoors on a rectangular court between two
teams of five players each. Every team attempts to score by launching the ball through the net
and elevated horizontal hoop known as the opponent's goal, or a basket.

TIMELINE AND HISTRY OF BASKETBALL

Dec 5, 1891: Dr. James Naismith, a physical education instructor at a YMCA in Springfield,
Massachusetts, created the game of basketball in order to keep his students active during
Massachusetts' chilly winters. A soccer ball and a peach basket that was fastened to the wall ten
feet above the floor were used for the game. In the beginning, dribbling was prohibited in the
game.

Jan 20, 1892 The First Official Game


Due to the efforts of Dr. James Naismith, the Canadian head of the physical education
department at the International Young Men's Christian Training School in Springfield,
Massachusetts, the first-ever basketball game was played on this day in a YMCA using two
peach baskets as nets.

Feb 9, 1895 The First College Basketball Game Played


The inaugural college basketball match takes place between the School of Agriculture and
Hamline University. 9–3 victory for the School of Agriculture.

Nov 20, 1898 The First Pro Basketball League is Established


Before finishing the 1903–04 season, the league dissolved in January 1904, having started
operations with the 1898–99 season.

May 14, 1906 The Invention of the Modern Hoop


Before 1901, peach baskets were in use until the invention of the current hoop, which features a
hardwood backboard, a cloth net, and a metal rim.

May 28, 1949 The NBA is Formed The National Basketball Association (NBA) was created by
the merger of the BAA and the National Basketball League.

Feb 5, 1958 The Implementation of the Modern Basketball


The Development of the Modern Basketball Tony Hinkle did not create the more recognizable
orange rubber basketball that is in use today until the late 1950s.

Mar 18, 1959 Dribbling Becomes Part of the Game


Once the manufacturing of basketballs became universal, the technique of dribbling was
implemented as the basketballs were more consistently shaped.

Mar 25, 1976 The ABA-NBA Merger


Before the ABA and NBA joined in 1976, the American Basketball Association, a new
organization, briefly threatened the NBA's hegemony in 1967. The NBA is currently the most
popular, lucrative, talented, and competitive professional basketball league in the world. The
result was the NBA as it exists today.
