1891 -James A. Naismith invents the sport basketball. He published the rules for his
new game in December 21, 1891 that consists of 13 rules then named it
basketball.
1893 - YMCA'S Med Rideout arrange the first european match in Paris in Montmartre
- The game spread throughout the United States, Canada and the world
1894 -- First basketball was marketed, it was lace measured close to 32 inches or about
4 inches longer than soccer ball, in circumference and weighed less than 20
ounces.
1896 - The first known professional basketball game is played in Trenton New Jersey in
november 7, 1896
1898 - Professional leagues were forming as were collegiate leagues. 16 to part in the
first professional basketball league.
1900 - Major colleges where fielding for a basketball team which gave students the
chance to actively participate in the game and start a career.
- The 5-5 game is the standard for playing and players used to remove
permanently from the game if they were substituted.
1904 - The first professional league was disbanded but between then and world war I,
small championships were created and some teams played for money against
challengers. Petition were made by basketball supporters to have basketball
included as olympic demonstration sport.
- The all-black basketball teams (black fives) we're also established in 1904
1905 - Formal collegiate rules were introduced for basketball and made the game
popular for student athletes.
1906 - Metal hoops, nets and backboards were included in the rules of the game which
took the level of competition on a higher level
1907 - The amateur All-black olympian Athletic League was formed in New York City
consisting of the Smart Set Athletic Club. The first series city basketball game
between two black teams was played in 1901 when the Smart Set Athletic Club of
Brooklyn traveled to Washington to play the crescent athletic club. The team
known as the "gravedigger".
1916 - Several rules were made which included allowing a player to shoot a ball after
dribbling, this took the level of competition at a higher level.
1921 - Re-entry by substation was allowed in the game which gave players more play
time and resting time
1922 - The first all African- American professional team was founded: the Rens.
1932 - The International Basketball Federation was formed (FIBA). The Federation pave
for updating the game and help the sport to become an olympic sport.
1936 - The game become official olympic sport in 1936. This gave an opportunity for
national players around the world to play the game against other countries
1939 - The first NCCA Basketball DI Tournament was held marking the start of among
colleges and universities in America.
1940 - The first basketball game is televised from Madison Square Garden; Fordham vs.
the University of Pittsburgh. It was over NBC's experimental station in NY, W2XBS.
The game in which Pittsburgh beat Fordham 50-37, this mark the start of the
sports media exposure.
- Herman Sayger, a high school basketball phenom cum coach in the Midwest
came up with the idea of a three point shot in a scoring system that rewarded
distance of the shot being made. The three-point line as well as other rule
changes were tested in a game between Columbia and Fordham on february 7,

1946 - The Basketball League was founded in New York City on June 6,1946 as the
Basketball Association of America (BAA).
1948 - By 1948-49 when the laceless molded ball was made official the size had been
set as 30 inches (76 cm).
1949 - The BAA emerge with its rival NBL. As of the early 21st century, the NBA is the
most significant professional basketball league in the world in terms of
popularity, salaries, talents and level of competition.
1976 - The ABA merge with NBA in the summer of 1976, with its for most successful
franchises being incorporated into the older league.
