Take-home Final Exam – MECH 344

April 17, 2020

Exam start time: 2.00 PM

Exam end time: 6.00 PM

Notes:
1) This is a take-home exam. Therefore, ACADEMIC HONESTY IS STRICTLY REQUIRED.
2) The exam includes two problems, and you are required to attempt both two problems.
3) The problems are of equal value.
4) Be sure to read the problems carefully so that you only answer what is required.
5) Be sure to write your solution including equations and diagrams with clear
explanation/description in the given exam Word document, without any exception. No hand
writing and no other document format (e.g. pdf, jpeg, bmp) will be accepted.
6) Your diagrams can be created in other programs (such as PowerPoint, AutoCAD, PaintShop and
etc..) and then they can be copied to your exam Word document as images if needed.
7) If you use any tables, graphs and etc. in your solution, you need to provide your reference source.
8) Use Font size of 12 for text and equations/formulas.
9) When you save the file, include the course title, the term and your full name in the file's name
(example “MECH344_winter2020_ Tony Cooks.docx”)
10) Students need to write their first and last names, their student ID in the required field below.
11) Start your solution on page 3.
12) Students are advised to upload exam papers in Moodle 20 minutes before due time in case of any
unforeseen technical problems.
13) Every 15 minutes of late submission for any reasons will result in 10% fraction of grade loss for
the final exam.
14) Some students may be called for an oral examination if their exam papers raise some concerns. If
so, the oral exam grade will be taken as their final exam grade.

50 hp power is supplied to the spur gear-1 located at B and being transmitted through the shaft to the spur
gear-3 as shown in Figure 1. The shaft is rotating at 2500 rpm. The spur gears (1, 2, 3, 4) have a normal
pressure angle of 20°. The pitch diameter for the gear-1 is 6 inches and for the gear-3 is 3 inches. The
shaft is supported by bearings at A and C. The material used in the shaft design is alloy steel with the
yield strength, Sy = 152 ksi and ultimate tensile strength, S UTS = 168 ksi. Assume that stress concentration
at critical location(s) is Kt = 3. As for correction factors for material fatigue limit, consider only loading
type(s), reliability of 90% and size of 1.5 inches.

Question 1- Determine shear force and bending moment diagrams, and shaft size(s) at critical location(s).

Question 2- For a design life of 1,000 hours, calculate required dynamic load ratings for ball bearings
(inner race rotates) at positions A and C. Assume the bearing at A also supports an additional thrust load
of 200 lbf.
