C.Lesson Proper
What is volleyball?
-Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, physical director of the Young Men's Christian
Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, massachusetts.
- Volleyball is a game wherein two teams volley the ball in the air back and forth over the net. The
object is to force the opposing team either to fail to return the ball successfully or play the ball
illegally.

What are the basic skills in volleyball?

Serve- A serve begins each rally. A player must hit the ball
with his or her hand over the net to land inside the lines of
the court. Players may serve underarm or overarm (hardly
anyone at elite level would offer an underarm serve).

Pass- A volleyball pass is done with the objective to move

the ball to a teammate called a setter. The pass is the first
touch by the team. The passing skill is performed... On a ball
that has been served. On a ball that is attacked by the
opponent.

Dig- A dig refers to when a volleyball player prevents the ball

from hitting the ground on their side of the net after an
opponent has spiked or served the ball toward them.

Block- Blocking in the sport of volleyball is a

defensive play that is accomplished by 1, 2, or 3
front-row players jumping and pressing their
arms over the net in an effort to "block" the
opposing hitter. Blocking is one of the most
worked-on skills out there.
Set- Setting is the second step of passing, and it can be
done to either dump the ball over into an undefended spot
or to “set” the ball into a position that allows the hitter to
spike it over. The perfect set is a high ball, just inches from
the net.

Attack/Spike- The spike is performed by

moving the arm in a way such that you angle
the ball to land on the ground of your
opponent's side of the court. Usually a spike
is hit with great force at a downward angle.

What are the different facilities and equipment used in volleyball?

● Playing court
As per FIVB guidelines and volleyball rules, a volleyball court is
18m (59ft) long and 9m (29.5ft) wide. The volleyball court is split
into two halves of 9m (29.5ft) each and has a net. The top of the
volleyball net is 2.43m (7.97ft) tall net for men's and 2.24m
(7.35ft) tall for women's competition.

● Net and Post

It is 1m wide and 9.5m-10m long and is 10cm square black
mesh. The height of the net is measured from the center of
the playing court. The antenna is a flexible rod, 1.8m long
and 10mm in diameter and made of fiberglass or similar
material. It is fastened on opposite sides of the net.

● Volleyball ball
Volleyball is a spherical ball of 65-67 cm circumference. It is made of
leather or any synthetic material and weighs 260-280 g. Volleyballs
are available in various colors, however for international tournaments,
FIVB approved balls should only be used.

Why do we need to know the basic skills in volleyball?

- It is important to learn the basics skills in playing team sports because it will be the main key
for your team to win and complete the game perfectly.
-Learning, practicing and mastering the basic skills of sport is one of the foundations of
coaching, sports performance and athletic training. However, just learning a sports skill is only the
first step in the process. Only fools believe that “Practice Makes Perfect” if the goal is to win in
competition.
