Introduction

According to Grabe (2009), reading is one of the most crucial skills in

educational settings. It takes students a good reading ability to discover the

content of the text. Moreover, (Harrison, 2004) states that the importance of

reading is not only related to the development of knowledge but also to the

thinking capability of the people. This capability will therefore be the basic

development of emotional, moral and verbal intelligence. Additionally, these

developments establish what kind of person that person will be. Reading

cannot be separated from the learning process since it is a crucial matter and

a necessity as a tool of education (Mokhtari et al., 2009).

Reading also provides benefits to the students in terms of improving

their reading comprehension, writing skill, vocabulary knowledge, and spelling

skill (Mason & Krashen, 1997). Moreover, reading is not only cognitive

processes but also psychological processes of thinking and learning. From

this view, reading is a complex mental process which has various interactions

such as information-processing of thinking and learning (Hacker, 2009). For

students, it's crucial to be motivated to read (Rahman and Weda, 2018).

According to (Guthrie et al., 2000), a person's goals, values, and beliefs in

relation to the subjects, activities, and outcomes of reading are considered to

be their reading motivation.

Extensive reading has been shown to improve reading comprehension

and speed in studies. Learners demonstrate improvement in their spelling and

vocabulary understanding, and it appears to result in significant vocabulary

learning. Additionally, it has been claimed that extensive instruction can

enhance students' affective traits, such as reading desire and attitude (Shen,

2008).

According to Powell (2005), extended reading means reading a lot of

straightforward material outside of the classroom, typically in the comfort zone

of the learner. As a result, students are free to select the books they want to

read. They are urged to discover reading materials that suit their interests and

level of reading comprehension better if they don't find the recommended

reading materials to be fascinating. The availability of an Internet connection

enables students to access a wealth of real-world resources to make learning

English more fun (Dang, 2011). The internet offers a wide variety of online

reading resources, including Wattpad, Google Books, Glose, Tumblr,

Goodreads, and others. In 2022, Wattpad anticipates reaching an audience of

over 94 million users. Its users are free to read and write on the platform. On

Wattpad, readers have access to a vast selection of books in a variety of

genres, from which they can select the ones that most appeal to them.

In 2006, the two Canadian developers who co-founded Wattpad Allen

Lau and Ivan Yuen run an online writing and reading group that they describe

as a platform for aspiring and established authors to submit their work,

receive criticism, and connect with other writers and readers (Ramdarshan
Bold, 2018). Wattpad offers a ton of free and expensive reading materials

that can support the kids' reading. Users of the platform can choose from 21

different story genres based on their personal interests. Adventure, fantasy,

historical fiction, horror, humor, science fiction, non-fiction, urban, thriller, and

more genres are among the story types.

Wattpad includes authors from many nations who produce stories in

numerous languages because it is a platform that lets users read and write.

However, users can choose the preferred language for the stories. There are

a ton of stories accessible for the students to read that are written in English.

To increase readership, certain well-known stories originally written in

languages other than English have also been translated into English.

It might be challenging and requires a lot of mental effort to learn a new

language. Findings from a 2012 Swiss Study demonstrate that learning a new

language alters brain architecture, having an effect on the regions of the brain

involved in memory, conscious thought, and creativity. Long-term benefits of

bilingualism include improved memory and focus, as well as the ability to

maintain brain health into old age. It enhances personality and boosts one's

feeling of self-worth on a personal level. Simply put, learning a foreign

language develops the brain's strength and adaptability. Teenagers who do

not speak English well can start to learn English by reading Wattpad, which is

primarily written in English. Additionally, excellent writers might inspire you to

learn more and deepen your comprehension of English. Addiction to Wattpad

among teenagers' readers may have detrimental effects (ETC, 2020).

This study aims to help the students to encourage themselves to have

good reading habits and get to know the advantages and disadvantages of

reading wattpad.

Background of the Study

The book is primarily a resource for anyone seeking knowledge,

Information and abilities that are crucial for the development of moral lessons

in their lessons. The goal of this study is to help students become self-

motivated readers. to avoid developing bad reading habits and reading too

much that they won't benefit from. By reading these Wattpad printed books,

we may gain knowledge about the advantages and disadvantages of each

part of their content. Because so many contemporary teenagers are highly

curious about and misinformed about the things that these novels may

include, it can also cause us to act in ways that are wrong for our age and

give us time to decompress and enjoy connecting with the people in the story.

People read because of the benefits reading offers. They can take something

from it and suse it to increase their vocabulary. Additionally, people can

unwind and spend time alone while reading literature.

Statement of the Problem

The study focused on the effects of reading wattpad in relation to the

English academic performance among students at Mabitac Integrated

National High School.

Furthermore, the participants focused to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the participants in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Sex

1.3 Grade and Level

2. What is the effect of reading wattpad among the participants?

3. What is the General Weighted Average in English among the

participants?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the effects of reading

wattpad and the academic performance in English among the participants?

Hypothesis

The following hypotheses were drawn:

Ho: There is no significant relationship between reading Wattpad and

academic performance in English of the participants.

Significance of the Study

The purpose of the study is to determine the effects of reading

Wattpad in relation to the English Academic Performance among students at

Mabitac Integrated National High School. The study also consists of some

ideas in order to satisfy the aims of this research. This study may also benefit

the following:

their studies.

School Administrators They may help their subordinates,

especially the students of Mabitac Integrated National High School on the

effects of Wattpad.

Future Researcher/s For them to have new ideas based on the

result of the study if they plan to do research about the effects of reading

Wattpad in relation to the English academic performance.

Scope and Limitation

The research will conduct this research to determine the effect of

reading wattpad in relation to the English academic performance of Grade 9
& 10 students in Mabitac Integrated National High School. The participants of
this study are all the Wattpader (author) and Wattpadian (reader) in Mabitac
Integrated National High School.
