COURSE OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student will be able to:


1. Estimate the characteristics of CMOS circuits.
2. Design and analysis different digital logics using CMOS technology.
3. Implement the circuit layout using standard fabrication technique.

UNIT –I Introduction to VLSI

VLSI Design Concepts, Moor's Law, Scale of Integration (SSI, MSI, LSI, VLSI, ULSI – basic
idea only), VLSI Design Flow, Types of VLSI Chips (Analog & Digital VLSI chips, General
purpose, ASIC, PLA, FPGA).

UNIT- II MOSFET Basics

Basic MOS Transistor, Types of MOSFET and its working principle, MOS transistor threshold
voltage, (Ids – Vds) characteristics of NMOS and PMOS transistors, MOSFET scaling, short
channel effect, NMOS inverter, Pull-up to pull-down ratio (Zpu/Zpd) of nmos inverter driven by
another nmos inverter, CMOS inverter, VTC curve, BiCMOS, Latch-up in CMOS circuits,.

UNIT-III CMOS for Digital VLSI Circuits: CMOS logic design for, NAND & NOR Gates,
Complex logic circuits , CMOS Full Adder, pass transistor logic CMOS Transmission GATE,
Advanced CMOS Logic circuits; Sequential CMOS logic circuits; SR Latch circuit, clocked JK
Latch/ Master-Slave JK, CMOS D-latch & Edge triggered flip-flop.

UNIT-IV IC Fabrication
Introduction to IC Technology, Fabrication Process steps- Oxidation, Lithography, Diffusion,
Ion implantation, Metallization, NMOS/PMOS fabrication, n-well CMOS Process, p-well
CMOS Process, Twin Tub Processes.

UNIT-IV VLSI Layout design

MOS layers, design rules, stick and layout diagrams for NMOS, PMOS and CMOS Inverters,
NAND, NOR gates.
