Filtration and Crystallisation

LO: Explain how we can separate out mixtures using
filtration and crystallisation.
Starter:
What are the following pieces of equipment called?

Science equipment
• How do we draw science equipment?

Stranded on an island
• Everyone in the room has been in a plane crash on
an island in the middle of the ocean.
• You need drinking water, but there is no fresh
water on the island. You need to get fresh water
from sea water which has got metal debris (pieces)
from the plane in it.
• How are you going to do it? You can use anything
that you can find on the island and in the wreckage.

Filtration
• A physical method of separating solids from liquids.
• The solid has not dissolved in the liquid because Q.itWhat will still
is insoluble be dissolved
in the filtrate?

carbon and
water
and salt

Your turn
1. Get 3 spatulas of the mixture.
2. Use a magnet to remove the iron fillings from the
beaker.
3. Add water so the salt dissolves. (about 50 ml)
4. Then filter it, so you remove the sand.
5. Pour the solution into a evaporating dish.
6. Heat using a Bunsen burner, until about half the
water has evaporated. What do you observe?

Quick Questions
1. What physical method will we use to separate the
sand and water in the mixture?

So what is a Physical Method?

• A method that uses the physical property of a
substance without causing a chemical change.

In our case, the physical properties were:

• Solubility of the salt vs sand – This allowed filtration

- The salt was soluble, so could not be filtered.
- The sand was insoluble, so could be filtered.

• Boiling point of the water – This allowed crystallisation

- Because the water has a boiling point of 100⁰C, it
could be evaporated during crystallisation to leave
behind the solid salt.
