EFFECTIVE BEST PRACTICES IN THE CLASSROOM

I. Rationale:

As a teacher, our role is to plan, implement, reflect on, and refine our
students’ literacy lessons and procedures. Within this process, we encourage
practices inside the classroom that will make teaching-learning process more
effective. To develop student’s relationship with teachers and support their decision-
making process related to teaching and learning, trying new strategies, exploring
new ideas, making positive changes in teaching style, strategizing,
differentiated instruction, classroom situated learning and finding effective
ways to accomplish or change an instructional practice are very essential.

II. Brief Description of Best Practice:

Some of the best practices implemented inside the classroom are the
following:

A. HIGH-DESITY READING AND WRITING INSTRUCTION. Literacy instruction


focuses on devoting more of the school day to reading and writing – including
some dedicated applications to all curriculum areas (Math, Science, English,
Filipino, etc.) so students connect lessons to real-world experiences.
B. SCAFFOLDED INSTRUCTION IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE. It requires a
lot of patience in teaching mathematics and science. Concentrated instructional
assistance allowing each individual to experience success in learning is an
intensive MUST. One way of doing so is to exercise Scaffolded instruction.
Scaffolding includes mini-lessons, individual coaching, prompts and open-ended
question stems. Students’ progress and moved ahead with the correct amount of
scaffolding accompanied by gradual release of responsibility as follows.
 The teacher is responsible for a selected task
 The teacher shares responsibility for the task with students.
 Students take responsibility for the task with teacher support
 Students assume responsibility for applying the new task to new
situations.
C. CLASSROOM INTERACTION STYLE. Best practice is characterized by an
instructional approach based on modeling, demonstration, and mentoring as
opposed to telling or giving information to others. Some examples are Improving
critical thinking through Socratic method, Collaborative learning, peer tutoring,
peer evaluation, group consultation, practical and hands-on activities and
mentoring. Teachers give students opportunities to become problem solvers who
take responsibility for their own thinking. As teacher shift their practices toward a

coaching model of interaction, they engage students in high-level questioning and


responding through the use of active learning strategies.

III. Impact:

These best classroom practices helped teachers align their instructions

particularly in

A. Demonstrating instructional balance in learning;

B. Interacting in the classroom as students’ model, coach and mentor;

C. Making teaching-learning process more meaningful;

D. Producing self-directed learners; and

E. Continuing development of teaching – learning process.
