Theoretical Framework

This study was based on the adsorption theory of activated carbon by

Scheele, cited by Bhatnagar, Hogland, Marques, and Sillanpaa (2013) in their

overview of activated carbon. It states that the ability of activated carbon lies

primarily in its exceptional adsorption capacity. Due to its highly porous

structure, activated carbon can effectively attract and retain a wide range of

impurities, contaminants, and pollutants from gasses, liquids, and even

solutions. This adsorption capability allows activated carbon to remove various

organic compounds, chemicals, and undesirable substances, making it a

valuable material in numerous applications, including water and air purification,

industrial processes, and medical treatments for poisonings and overdoses (F.

Reinoso, 2001). Activated carbon is crucial due to its exceptional adsorption

properties. It can effectively capture and eliminate various odor-causing

molecules and volatile organic compounds from the air. Incorporating activated

carbon into deodorizers can help in neutralizing unpleasant smells, making

indoor environments more pleasant and comfortable.

This study is well supported by Rene Maurice Gattefossé's theory of

aromatherapy, cited by Zimmerman's (2018) systematic review on the theory

behind aromatherapy. It states that aromatherapy is a holistic healing treatment

that uses natural plant extracts to promote health and well-being. It is based on

the principle that certain aromas can have a positive effect on the mind, body,

and spirit. For centuries, the essential oils have found their importance as a

fragrance with a curative potential on the body, mind and spirit (Babar et al.,

2015). These aroma molecules are very potent organic plant chemicals that

make the surroundings free from disease, bacteria, virus and fungus. These

aromatic compounds, often derived from essential oils, can be inhaled or

applied topically to stimulate various physiological and emotional responses.

Aromatherapy is commonly used for relaxation, stress relief, mood

enhancement, and overall improvement of the body's natural balance (MH Ke

et al., 2022). It is a way to relieve physical and mental stress by improving

physical and psychological states using essential oils extracted from aromatic

plants through inhalation, massage, bathing, incense and other conditioning

methods.

This research is linked to Kremer's theory of olfaction, cited by A.E.

Bourgeois and J. Bourgeois’s theory review of olfaction (year). It states that

olfaction is the sense of smell, which allows organisms to detect and interpret

various odors in their environment. The process of olfaction involves several

key components, including the detection of odorants, the transmission of

sensory signals to the brain, and the interpretation of these signals to recognize

specific smells (Mori, 2013). When an odorant connects with its receptor in the

nose, attractive and repulsive interactions between molecules have a role in

causing perception of the smell. Upon binding to olfactory receptors, odorant

molecules trigger nerve impulses that travel through the olfactory nerve to the

olfactory bulb, a component of the brain's limbic system. The olfactory bulb

subsequently analyzes these signals and transmits them to other brain regions

for additional processing and interpretation. (Spence, 2021). These concepts

facilitate the investigation of assessing the effectiveness of gelatinized activated

charcoal combined with chamomile extract in order to pinpoint the unique

aroma of inhaling chamomile, which contributes to enhancing an individual's

psychological well-being.

Conceptual Framework

This conceptual framework serves as the researcher's roadmap for

acquiring vital information and completing the study's execution.

The initial frame introduces the study's focus, encompassing the

effectiveness of gelatinized activated charcoal with chamomile extract. This

effectiveness includes aspects such as enhancing air quality, reducing health

risks, understanding user perception, evaluating environmental impact, and

promoting sustainability. In the second frame, it outlines the study’s process,

supported by data collection through experimental methods. This involves

conducting experiments using gelatinized activated charcoal with chamomile

extract and documenting its effects on the air quality in restrooms. The primary

focus is on evaluating its capacity to reduce restroom odors and associated

health risks while also comparing the environmental impact to that of albatross.

The third frame showcases the study's findings, emphasizing the effectiveness

of the product as a natural alternative for albatross, along with

recommendations for improving the product and promoting educational

awareness that showcases environmental mindfulness and eco-consciousness.

The arrow that links the input, the processing stage, and the output illustrates

the system's nature and the manner in which actions lead to the desired

outcomes, which are regarded as the output.

Statement of the Problem

Restrooms are crucial public spaces that significantly impact the overall

experience of individuals. However, the persisting issue of foul odors in

restrooms continues to be a major concern, contributing to discomfort and

dissatisfaction among users. Current deodorizing solutions heavily rely on

chemical-based products, which not only pose potential health risks but also fail

to provide a sustainable and long-lasting solution to the problem. In response to

this pressing issue, the researchers will seek to answer the following questions:

1.) How Does the combination of gelatinized activated charcoal with

and chamomile extract effectively mitigate restroom odors?

2.) and how Is this gelatinized activated charcoal with chamomile

extract differ from the action of works better than chemical-based

deodorizers such as the usual bathroom albatros?

3.) Does gelatinized activated charcoal with chamomile extract

improve air quality and reduce health risks associated with chemical-

based deodorizers in restrooms?

4.) In terms of environmental impact and sustainability, how does this

natural alternative (gelatinized activated charcoal with chamomile

extract) compare to the commonly used chemical-based deodorizer

(albatross) in restrooms?

5.) Does the implementation of gelatinized activated charcoal with

chamomile extract demonstrate safety and effectiveness in neutralizing

odors and creating a pleasant restroom environment compared to

chemical-based deodorizers?

6.) How do users perceive and rate prefer the fragrance and

effectiveness of natural alternatives the combination of charcoal and

chamomile in comparison to the usual bathroom chemical-based

deodorizers?

7.) Based on the findings of the study, what possible recommendations

can be inferred?

Hypothesis

Ho: The utilization of gelatinized activated charcoal infused with chamomile

extract is not an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to

chemical-based deodorizers in restrooms.
