2. Internship activities
2. 1 planning and teaching
2.1.1 Planning
In my Internship time before to thought I had to prepare lesson and class diary,
after I collected teaching aids, I read some books related to the lesson I preferred
method must be used to deliver a lesson and lesson was mentored careful
according to the advice from mentor like to use natural teaching aids during lesson
deliver and at the different steps of the lesson
She advised me that to prepare lesson before going to teach is very better because
it helps to apply lesson steps progressively combine with motivation to the learners
this also important issues for classroom management.
This report there is some topic which was difficult and another which was easily to
be covered.
Complementarity in the society is the lesson which was easy for me on lesson title
of preparation in planning and teaching activities for primary five, in this way
lesson plan was very easy and during delivering of the lesson learners had prior
knowledge and experience about lesson.

Also in primary four equity and equality was the lesson which was difficult for me
in planning and teaching activities compare to another lessons, I would like to use
different methods in order to overcome that weakness.
The important lesson and experiences I had learnt from the lesson development
during Internship
. It is better to plan lesson before to deliver it,
. It is necessary to refer to different references at time you plan lesson,
. Write single sentence and explain it to make understanding of lesson,

6
. It is also good to follow lesson steps and time management,
. Divide class into groups and give them task to do during lesson taught.

2.1.2 Teaching
Before to start teaching my lesson, I had to great learners and I used some
motivation together with learners, after I checked the present and absent pupils.
In delivering my lesson, I asked learners the previous lesson and I made a review
on it, after I divided class into groups and I showed learners teaching aids to
increase their curiosity to new lesson and I give them task to perform in those
groups.
After I helped learners to participate in groups by facilitating them, then learners
represented their findings, there I gave ideas of additions in order to emphasize
understanding of lesson, at the end of lesson I wrote some exercise on Chalkboard
for individual to verify if objective have been achieved, mentor intervened during
teaching and give some advice for issues I can improve, I was happy for role of
mentor and my colleague teachers.

7
The following pictures shows how I used to use group work and guiding
learners in whole activities during my internship;

Picture 1: Shows how learners had participated in group discussion with the
teacher’s additions;

8
9
Picture 2; shows the presentation of learners with the guidance of teacher.

In this process I met with some problems like:

. Lack of natural teaching aids that make more attractive to learners,
. Lack of enough desk where they sit in impropriate way,
. Lateness of learners at school this cause me to wait for them to introduce new
lesson,
. Learner’s behavior caused by their development stage,

10
The following are two lessons that I delivered well during my Internship process:
Subject: Social studies
Unit: complementarity and social cohesion in the society.
Sub-unit: consequences of disharmony in the society.
Date: on17thfebruary 2020
Instructional objective: by using group discussion P5 leaners will be able to state
consequences of disharmony in the society correctly.
This topic was very easy because learners have experience and previous
knowledge they observed from their neighbors when they were fighting or having
other conflicts at home this led them to understand lesson quickly.
Subject: social studies
Unit: basic human rights and children’s rights
Sub-unit: basic human right
Date: on23thjanuary2020
Instructional objective: by using groups p4 leaners will be able to identify basic
human rights clearly.
These are two lessons went well where learners actively well in learning process
and I used teaching aids to increase their understanding
This is also lessons that I didn’t delivered well during Internship activities, because
its took too much time to prepare and to teach, also learners haven’t prior
knowledge and experience for that, such as:
Subject: Social studies
Topic: Equity and Equality
Sub-topic: Ways of promoting equity and equality in our district.
Date: on 17th February 2020
Instructional objectives: by using games and pictures p4 leaners will be able to
state ways of promoting equity and equality correctly.

11
. Subject: physical education
. Topic: motor control
. basic exercises of circulatory system and respiratory system.
. Date: on 04th February 2020
. Instructional objectives: by using playground p4 leaners will be able to perform
exercises of circulatory system and respiratory system correctly.
I didn’t deliver this lesson well because It was the first time I taught physical
education.
These are important lesson learnt from Internship process
. Using natural teaching aids is better
. Provide more motivation to the learners during lesson delivery
. Teacher must use simple English according to the learner’s level and
understandable to them. Teach lesson from simple to complex. The teaching
process required to know that learners are different in their behaviors and to know
how to manage their unexpected behaviors.

2.2 Extracurricular activities

In this process, intern had to participate both activities even extra to the lessons; I
took part in PTA meeting to give some suggestions refer to school development,
also to community. I have attended in umuganda according to activities which are
planned by school, also I have attended in I torero, I attended also the training of
using English properly by the help of peace Corp volunteer who trained teachers
every day, also I attended teachers’ English club.
So that activities collaboration of teaching staff and students create good
relationship between students and teachers also make good communication
between them.

12
3. Problems encountered and solutions
3.1 Problems and solutions related to teaching and learning events
Some of the problems and difficulties related to teaching and learning process that
I encountered during my Internship at G. S CYAMUKUZA I were as follow:
1. Language barrier due to our Mather tongue is KINYARWANDA that are
most used all over the country even in school learners have little skills about
English language this hinder learning process
2. Nature of environment in classroom due to large number of pupils lead to
bad weather like too harsh also this school is nearest to the road that made
learning difficult,
3. Lack of materials like nature teaching aids affect delivering of lesson
because there are some materials I founded myself resulted to time
consuming
4. Lateness of learner’s some learners reached at school in unexpected time
lead to teacher wait them this hinder learning process
5. Problem of few desks in classroom where some learners lack place to sit in
and then sit in uncomfortable space this make learning difficult
6. Lack of books of new curriculum in primary5 and primary2 this made me to
lack enough information this hinder learning process

The followings were some of the solutions that I employed to solve the above
problems and difficulties that I faced

1. The problem of language barrier I preferred to use method of creating

English club to the learners, to learn how they can speak English themselves,
this done in extra time together with teacher
2. To solve that problem, I worked fast, fast to get those materials finally I got
them and applied Internship perfectly
3. I used to form groups in classroom to develop communication of
learner-learner and learner-teacher also to help learners to learn from anthers
to understand content quickly

13
4. To that problem teacher choose to change environment some time he took
learners outside of class where they got proper atmosphere to learn
5. Intern as voluntary he spent his time for some advice and encouraged learners to
carefully to their lesson are very important
6. Simply, I discussed with my colleges teachers to take responsibilities of coming
on the time rather than letting at school without permission
7. I used to teach from simple to complex, known to unknown to make learners
understandable
3.2 problems and solutions related to the school administration and
management
Some are problems and solutions related to the school administration and
management that I encountered during my Internship at G.S CYAMUKUZA was
as follow
. This school has insufficient library this lead to lack of enough books for all
lessons
. The school head teacher came far of school this lead to indiscipline of some
students when he is absent
. There were a few play grounds that caused learners didn’t know how to play
. Problem of lack enough water at school
. Poor teacher-learner’s relationship this leads to learner’s school dropout or
migrate to another school.
The following are some of the solutions that I employed to solve the above
problems and difficulties that I faced during Internship at G.S CYAMUKUZA
were as follow:
. It is better to have enough teachers I order to improve the quality of education.
This will help every learner to have enough skills in his/her learning
. I used to educate each and every learner to like the school so that it will help them
to create their own jobs
. I thought learners by giving them the advice of never school dropout

14
. To solve these problems, we sat down and we subdivided the program into
different terms according to the expected to give to the learners and we arranged
well time table
. I used to form English club to increase the learner’s understanding of language
and to speak confidently.

4. Overall evaluation of Internship exercise

Internship at G.S CYAMUKUZA was a great opportunity for me to learn
real-world teaching experience
. Internship provide to interns skills to have self-confidence and abilities to stand in
front of the pupils fearlessly
. From Internship, you get more skills about lesson plan’ making scheme of work
and teaching skills from your neighbor teachers
. Internship helps the student-teacher to get more experience about teaching and
way used to make lesson accurately
. The benefit gained from Internship, I covered that it is better to plan lesson before
going to teach, to use teaching aids at different steps of lesson together with
motivation to make learners be active to the lesson

The benefit gained from Internship will help me in future as follow:

. Because, I get enough opportunities to access my skills and learnt another

methodology will help me to teach perfectly

. Also due to experience and methods used to make good understanding, this will
help me to create good relationship with the learners during the lesson
delivery
. Because, I used computer for long term, through making internship report and
other relevant documents, this will help me to make other documents on
myself when I will need to make them by using computer as technology.

15
. Some advice gained I will give the next interns this will help them to apply their
activities as conducted
During my Internship, I prepared lesson plan before to delivery it and the
monitoring require being carefully to find out if lesson have been
understood, if lesson steps were followed as expected and lesson were
supervised correctly as possible

5. Recommendations
5.1 Advice for next year’s Internship student-teachers
I realize now that doing Internship and teaching at G.S CYAMUKUZA isn’t easy.
But I would like to make some suggestions and recommendations to next year’s
Internship students. These are as follows:
. The student- teachers should read and know about the rules, policies and internal
regulations of the school before they start Internship
. Interns must work together with his/her colleagues to get more experience
. Interns should refer to other teacher’s documents this may help them
. Student-teacher should use simple sentence for learners to develop understanding
of them
. Intern should make research everywhere for what will enhance knowledge during
the Internship exercises
. Intern should be able to come with materials when he/she is going to teach to
avoid time consuming
5.2 Recommendation for the Internship program
The following are some of my opinions about the Internship program and how I
think the program can be improved
. I think it is better that school or Internship program would find materials that
could help interns

16
. I think students should be give more training about Internship exercise before
they are sent to primary school
. Every intern should be supervised and mentored during Internship
. I think it will be better if tutor from TTC and Internship program controlling
every daily activities of interns as possible
. Internship program should provide to interns all references to reflect during
planning his/her lesson
. I think that it will be better also if Internship period increased
5.3 Recommendation for G.S CYAMUKUZA

⮚ I wish to recommend this school to construct enough classes to

avoid over population in class
⮚ School should provide to interns materials required as possible
⮚ School should help interns in school environment adaptation
⮚ School should protect students to move away without permission
⮚ Using professional teachers that can lead to highest achievement of
school

Conclusion
All in all, I had seen that doing Internship is very good for student-teacher because
they get more skills for planning and teaching, in that time interns referred to
Another teachers’ documents, to look how they perform their activities that can
help them.

17
I think, it will be better to increase the time of training to the interns for the time
they are at their school, because it will increase the experiences of standing in front
of learners during lesson delivery and reduce fear.
