Why did the racism involved with

the pandemic impact Asians?

Importance
the importance of this issue is the safety of those affected by this racism
and discrimination. So many have been wounded, both physically and
mentally. Which makes these issues something that needs to be
reevaluated. The racism and discrimination has been with violence, within
blames, and has affected people’s health. There are statistics that prove
this racism and the fear that came from Covid-19. Even within governments.
The answers involved show why we need better plans to handle
discrimination and racism with every community, but especially the
overlooked ones.

Answers
Violence
Within the discrimination that came from Covid-19, there were a lot of
violent attacks involved. One case was where two students in Australia were
made fun of for being Asian, and were then beaten. This violence furthered
the separation that communities had from each other. Even within
governments, officials were raiding, name calling, and blaming Asians.
There had been violence already, but the attacks grew to larger numbers
during the pandemic.

Statistics
There are plenty of statistics involved with the racism from the pandemic. Some of
which being on why Asians felt unsafe in public after all of the attacks being made.
When Asians and Pacific islanders were asked about the main reasons for
discrimination, 64% say it was the cases first found in China. 57% say it was due to
Donald Trump. As well as 34% saying it was from republican lawmakers. There were
other statistics made on how many feel unsafe in public due to their race. (57%.) 82%
agreed that the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in higher amounts of discrimination.

Blame
Asians and those of Asian decent were being accused of carrying the virus, as well
as trying to spread it. These blames went into the governments of some countries,
such as Russia. In Russia, Chinese citizens’ houses were raided, and then they were
forced into lockdown, even before the whole country did. Not only this, but China as
a whole country was blamed for Covid-19. Especially after it was called the “Chinese
virus” and the “Wuhan virus.”

Government
Blames/Issues
There was a huge impact within the way the Asian community was viewed, including
within the governments. Throughout the world, different governments viewed
Asians/Asian Americans differently. There were a lot of blames thrown around during
the time of pandemic that involved governments. These blames were on what
started Covid-19 and which leader handled it the best. One of these blames was from
the governor in charge of the Veneto region of Italy. He said Italians have a
“culturally strong attention to hygiene, washing hands, taking showers, whereas we
have all seen the Chinese eating mice alive.” Not only were there blames, different
governments handled the pandemic and the racism tied to it in harsh ways. These
ways tie to some of the statistics and how violence was handled.

Extra Information
There hasn’t only been racism that includes the above subjects, there has been
issues within using derogatory language, media, bullying, and overall
discrimination. There has been push back against this racism, such as STOP AAPI
HATE groups. Along with Kamala Harris stating that “Racism is real in America. It
has always been. Xenophobia is real in America. It has always been.” If we can
together, as humans, help in any way to stop discrimination, we may be able to
help our future.
