3 Exercise
In playing any sport, learning and developing skills help athletes improve in
the game. These skills are essential in physical training and game strategies.
Moreover, individuals who play sport for leisure or exercise purposes must also
learn these skills to improve the quality of their game or workout and avoid
injuries.
This module will help you perform the different gymnastics conditioning
exercises that might interest you to learn and play the sport. After all, our main

What is It

What is Conditioning Exercise? Conditioning exercise is a routine that

prepares the body for performing any rigorous activity. Each sporting activity
places unique physical demands to its players depending on the following factors:
 the nature of the sport (endurance, power, contact),
 environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and playing surface),
 human variables (age of players, size and ability of opposition, disability
factors, amount of available substitutes, level of competition) and,
 time variables (stage of the season, stage of the tournament, stage of the
game).
Ideally, physical conditioning prepares players to a level where they are
capable of withstanding the demands of all likely situations. Good physical
conditioning enables players to meet all the physical requirements of their sport, to
perform well, and to minimize their risk of injury. Gymnastics conditioning
exercises are designed to help you strengthen your core, leg, and arm muscles at
the same time improving your control and flexibility.
Having core strength is vital in performing gymnastics routine most
especially in using gymnastics apparatuses. A balanced, effective physical
conditioning program must accommodate various components including strength,
flexibility, endurance, balance, speed, and power. The table below shows how can
conditioning exercise reduces the risk of injury and improve performance for each
component.

Table 1. How can conditioning reduce the risk of injury?

Conditioning Component Application to Injury Prevention

Strength Stabilizes the joints against sudden or large forces.

Endurance Improves the ability to repeat the same action and allows
continuous activity without fatigue – fatigue may contribute
to injury.

Power As a combination of speed and strength, power conditioning

allows the body to withstand sudden changes in motion,
speed, and direction.

Speed Enables players to move quickly to avoid contact situations.

Balance Reduces the possibility of tripping, falling, or landing in an

awkward position.

Flexibility Allows a greater range of motion without joint or muscle

pain.

Even though gymnastics is a sport mostly related to balance and flexibility,

it encompasses all of the physical fitness components.
