WHAT IS
LIGHTNING?
-A lightning is a flash of bright light in
the sky produced by electricity moving
within or between clouds, or between
clouds or the ground.

-Lightning is an electrical discharge

caused by imbalances between storm
clouds and the ground, or within the
clouds themselves.
WHAT IS
LIGHTNING?
-Most lightning occurs within the
clouds. And its scientific definition,
lightning, is a large-scale natural spark
discharge that occurs within the
atmosphere and the Earth's surface.

-In a simple definition, lightning is a

powerful burst of electricity that
happens very quickly during a
thunderstorm.

TRIVIA:
Lightning is five times hotter than the
surface of the Sun and some lightning
is more likely to spark wildfires.
HOW DOES LIGHTNING FORM?
STEP 1
The warm air rises. As the
air rises, water vapor cools
and forms a cloud. When
air continues to rise, the
cloud gets bigger and
forms thunderstorm.
STEP 2
The thundercloud has a
tiny bit of ice in it. And as
this tiny bit of ice bump to
each other they will build
an electrical charge.
STEP 3
The electrical charge
which is the electrons (-)
and protons (+) within the
cloud separate.
HOW DOES LIGHTNING
FORM?
STEP 4
Positively charged
particles or the lighter one,
forms at the top of the
cloud. Negatively charged
particles or the heavier
one, sink to the bottom of
the cloud.
STEP 5
The lightning forms when
an electrical charge builds
up inside a cloud and
moves to an oppositely
charged object.
 TYPES OF
LIGHTNINGS
CLOUD TO
GROUND
LIGHTNING (CG)
-As the name suggests, this is
when a stepped leader forms
an electric current or
connection to an upward
leader.
CLOUD TO CLOUD
LIGHTNING (CC)
-It is a formation of lightning
between two or more clouds.
INTRACLOUD
LIGHTNING (IC)
-It forms within a single storm
cloud wherein the negative
charge and positive charges
creates an electrical sheet of
light within that cloud.
CLOUD TO AIR
LIGHTNING (CA)
-Refers to lightning that
originates from a cloud but
terminates abruptly.
 TRANSIENT LUMINOUS EVENT (TLE)
-electrical discharge phenomena that lacks characteristics
commonly found on more familiar tropospheric lightning.
They occur above places where most thunderclouds form.

THE IMPACTS OF A
LIGHTNING STRIKE
Lightning's extreme heat will vaporize the
water inside a tree, creating steam that
may blow the tree apart.
Many houses are grounded by rods and
other protection that conduct a lightning
bolt's electricity harmlessly to the ground.
Homes may also be inadvertently grounded
by plumbing, gutters, or other materials.
Grounded buildings o er protection, but
occupants who touch running water or use
a landline phone may be shocked by
conducted electricity.
