a
At the purchaser’s request or at the producer’s discretion, the steel may be made with no

c
The combined total of the chromium and nickel contents shall be not less than 0.40%.

d
Aluminum may be used as a grain refining element without prior approval by the purchaser
and, when so used, shall not be included in the summation of Grain Refining Elements in the
chemistry table. The elements columbium and vanadium may be used singly or in
combination to 0.15% maximum, except where columbium is used singly or in combination
with vanadium in plates thicker than 14 mm (1/2 inch) or certain shape weights, in which
case the silicon content shall be 0.15% minimum. See CSA G40.21 current revision.

Note for ASTM A588 chemistry:

e
For each reduction of 0.01 percentage point below the specified maximum for carbon, and
increase of 0.06 percentage point above the specified maximum for manganese is permitted,
up to a maximum of 1.50%.

The steel mill certification shall report the required elements in the chemistry Table and
the chemistry notes which are the following:
Carbon, Manganese, Phosphorus, Sulfur, Silicon, Copper, Chromium, Nickel, Vanadium,
Columbium (Niobium), and Aluminum.
The steel mill certification shall also report the following elements:
Molybdenum, Titanium, and Nitrogen.

F
3. Manufacture:

The steel is to be fully killed and made to fine grain practice. The product may be either
hot rolled or normalized at the option of the producer.

4. Mechanical Properties:
F
Tensile Strength, psi (MPa), minimum 70,000 (480)
Yield Point, psi (MPa), minimum 50,000 (345)
Elongation in 2 in. (50 mm), %, minimum 21 ab
Elongation in 8 in. (200 mm), %, minimum 18 ab
a
The elongation restrictions of ASTM A588 shall apply.
b
The elongation restrictions of CSA G40.21 shall apply.

5. Test Reports:
F
The supplier shall furnish steel mill test reports for the actual material supplied in each
shipment containing the following information:
Mill Source
Heat Number

Material Specification (ASTM, CSA, EN, etc.)

Heat Chemical Analysis
Mechanical Properties of material supplied in each shipment.
F
Suppliers furnishing parts or assemblies containing EMS 66 shall have test reports,
containing the above information, available for EMD inspection upon request. (Exception
- Test reports for parts or assemblies subject to SPAP requirements, must be submitted
by the component supplier to EMD, along with other required SPAP documentation). In
the case of multiple heat numbers and product sizes, each should be appropriately
indicated.

6. Identification:
F
The material shall be identified as EMS 66 Steel and include ASTM A588 Type (A or B) or
CSA G40.21-Grade 50A. Identification shall also include the steel manufacturer’s name
or identifying mark and the heat number. The packing slip and the test report shall also
clearly identify each heat of material.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
F
a. EMS 66 covers a weldable, high strength-low alloy steel, commonly available in plate and
less commonly available in bars and structural shapes. This material offers improved
atmospheric corrosion resistance under certain conditions. This material has higher
tensile strength minimum than EMS 93. The plate is available in thicknesses from 3/16”
(5 mm) through 4” (100 mm).

F
b. Forming: The following Table shows the inside bend radii that will be used for cold forming
bends not greater than 900. Values are based on forming with the bend axis
perpendicular to the major rolling direction of the steel ("Best Way Bending"). The
Forming Table also addresses "Fair Way Bending". "Fair Way Bending" is not forming
with the bend axis perpendicular to the major rolling direction of the steel. When there are
bends in multiple directions such that it would not be possible to form by "Best Way
Bending", the minimum cold bend radius shall be the "Fair Way Bending" value for all
bends on that part. Where bends are tighter than 900, add 0.5 to the applicable minimum
bend radius value in the Table below.

Hot forming is not recommended.

FORMING TABLE Minimum Cold Bend Radius
For up to and including 900
Thickness (T), inch (mm) "Best Way" "Fair Way"
Bending Bending
0.187 (4.75 mm) to <0.32 (8 mm) 2T 2.5T
≥0.32 (8 mm) to ≤0.75 (20 mm) 2.5T 3.5T
>0.75 (20 mm) to ≤2.00 (50 mm) 3T 4.5T
>02.00 (50 mm) to 4.00 (100 mm) 4.5T 6T

Highly loaded parts that require forming should have the note for steel rolling direction on
the drawing where the forming will be perpendicular to the rolling direction (Best Way).
For highly loaded parts of such size that may prevent forming by “Best Way”, the
minimum cold bend radius should comply with the “Fair Way” values.

c. Welding – EMS 66 is generally weldable by common methods. Low hydrogen SMAW

processes, submerged arc, gas metal arc and flux cored arc welding can be used.
Welding technique is of fundamental importance. Special welding procedures, including
preheat, may be required for thicknesses greater than ½ (12.5 mm).

F
d. Steel furnished to this specification shall meet the requirements of the following general
standards for structural steel, as modified herein.

ASTM A6 – for materials manufactured to ASTM standards

CAN/CSA G40.20 – for materials manufactured to CSA standards

DRAFTING INFORMATION:
Where use of this material is specified, it shall be designated as:

MATERIAL: EMS 66 STEEL

F
The density of this material is 0.2829 lbs/in3 (7.831 grams/cm3).

Note: These specifications were developed without considering whether patents may or may
not be involved. In all cases, therefore, the supplier shall be required to assume
patent liability.
