The country of Fiji

Fiji is an archipelago nation located in the South Pacific Ocean, surrounding the Koro Sea,
approximately 1,300 miles (2,100 km) away from Auckland, New Zealand. The Fiji archipelago
is comprised of around 300 islands and 540 islets, with roughly 100 of the islands being
inhabited.

Suva is the capital, chief port, and commercial center of Fiji. The city is situated on the
southeast coast of Viti Levu, which is Fiji's principal island. It was founded in 1849 and became
the capital in 1882. In 1952, Suva was designated as a city and has since grown to become one
of the largest urban centers in the South Pacific islands.

Fiji's official languages are English, Fijian, and Fiji Hindi. Bauan Fijian is the most commonly
spoken dialect, originating from the Bau island. The ethnic population speaks two or more
languages, including English and their native language. The religious demographic of Fiji is
dominated by Christianity, with a whopping 63.91% of the population identifying as Christian.
Hinduism follows closely with 27.74% of the population, while Muslims make up 6.2%. The
remaining 1.1% identify as non-religious or other.

Fiji is a unitary parliamentary republic and the

President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere as the head of
state. The country has a population of 938,375 people. The
official currency used in Fiji is the Fijian dollar.

Fiji has a tropical climate with a hot, humid, rainy

season from December to April and a cooler season from
June to October.
People of Fji

The people of Fiji are mainly considered to be ethnically Melanesian. The country's economy is
mostly based on tourism and agriculture, with the latter including a significant subsistence
sector that is dominated by the indigenous Fijians. These farmers earn additional income
through the cultivation of crops such as copra, cocoa, kava, taro (known locally as dalo),
pineapples, cassava (manioc), bananas, or fishing.
Fijian culture, music, and dancing are important to tourism, with displays of "traditional"
practices being popular with visitors. Tourists also enjoy visiting model villages and handicraft
markets. A traditional performance called the meke, involves storytelling through song and
dance. It is a strict form of entertainment, which includes shamanic chanting, rhythmic clapping,
and the beating of slit drums. The shamans' bodies take on spirits of the netherworld during the
performance.
