FIJI-ON THE WORLD MAP
• The Fiji Islands are located in the Southern Hemisphere in
Melanesia
• Surrounded by the South Pacific Ocean.
• Fiji lies 5,100 km (3,169 miles) southwest of Hawaii and
• 3,150 km (1,957 miles) northeast of Sydney, Australia.
• Its exact geographic location is at latitude 15-22 degrees
south and 177 degrees west to 175 degrees east.
• Climate- Tropical Marine/mild

GEOGRAPHICAL FACTS
• Terrain: Mostly mountains of volcanic origin or varied,
dense tropical forest. 
• North of New Zealand and East of Australia
• Fiji is made up of 332 islands, of which 110 are inhabited
and an additional 500 islets
• Highest point is an extinct volcano known as Mount
Tomanivi (Toamiivi; 1,324 m) on Viti Levu. 
• Once known as the Cannibal Isles ; now officially called
the Republic of Fiji.
SOME HISTORICAL, SOCIAL, ECONOMIC
AND DEMOGRAPHIC FACTS
• Gained independence from the British Empire in 1970 after 96 years
as a British colony.
• Fiji’s total population stands at 896,445, compared to 884,887 in the
2017 Census and 837,271 in the 2007 census.
• Fiji is one of the most developed Pacific island nations
• Tourism is the most important sector of the economy followed by sugar
industry.
• Multicultural-culture is a mosaic of Indigenous Fijian, Indo-
Fijian, Asian and European traditions .
• 34% of the people live below poverty line/ national poverty line- 34%

FIJI FLAG FACTS
• The first use of the current flag design was in 1924.
• The current flag of Fiji was officially adopted on October 10, 1970.
• The light blue field is a symbol of the surrounding Pacific Ocean.
• The design symbolizes the agriculture of the nation.
• The coat of arms display a golden British lion holding a cocoa pod,
as well as panels displaying a palm tree, sugar cane, bananas and
dove of peace.
• The state arms have been slightly modified but the flag has remained
the same as during Fiji's colonial period.
THE PEOPLE
HISTORY OF FIJI
• Originally settled by Polynesians,
• The Fiji islands were sort of discovered in
1643 by Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman.
• Captain Cook set his anchor here in 1774, but
it was Captain Bligh of Mutiny on the
Bounty fame that finally made these islands
famous.
• In 1874 (10 October) Fiji became a British
 Colony,
• Indian contract labourers were brought to
work on sugar plantations.
• 1879- 463 Indian labourers arrived in
Leonidas - the first of some 61000 to come
over the next 37 years
