Torque values are to be used as a reference guide only. Used of its content by anyone is the sole responsibility
of that person/company and they assume all risk.
They approximate average conditions, but these conditions may change by the condition of the joint, types
of surface conditions, speed of assembly, etc. All things that are controlled or experienced by the user, while
the manufacturer has no control over the assembly procedure or results or the storage conditions once the
products leave the manufacturing facility.
Usually, structural fasteners need to be as tight as possible in the joint to avoid slip. Therefore, the assembly
torques, where noted, were calculated to be at 90% of the yield strength.
When fasteners are used on flanges, many users prefer to lower the installation torque to 50%.
Non-ferrous, stainless steels are used primarily for corrosion protection and are not tightened close to yield
but to 50% of the yield strength. Due to the protective oxide film on these fasteners, galling may occur if
using high speed assembly tools or have long runs with the nut to the joint surface. For consistency, it is
recommended to use a lubricant. The nickel based are preferred. Copper based lubricants can be more
efficient and some can lower the ‘k’ factor to 0.09. The lubricant on the charts is for the nickel.
Lubricants on the Hot Dip Galvanized products are for a light oil. The ‘Plain’ products are as received.
Lubricants applied to these products include MolyKote.
The stainless steel and HDG ‘k’ factors have been determined by experimentation. However, different
batches of products may produce different results, due to die wear, coating thickness variables and lubricant
viscosities.
