Materials:
250 yds of worsted weight yarn
4.00mm / F hook

Completed circumference is approximately 22”


Gauge: 16 dc x 12 rows = 4”x4”
Working the Square:
Rnd 1: Ch 90, sl st into a circle. Be careful not to twist the
chain while joining. Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), 89 hdc. Sl st
to first st to close. (90 hdc total)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, 89 hdc. Sl st to close. (90 hdc total). Fasten
off.

Color change
Rnd 3: Wrap your starting stitch around the backpost of any st in rnd 2. Ch 3, 89 bpdc. Sl st to
close. (90 bpdc total).
Rnd 4: Ch 2, 89 hdc. Sl st to close. (90 hdc total). Fasten off.

Flip your work, with wrongside facing out. Fold the work in half, and sl st across the
starting chain to make a seam. This becomes the top of the hat.
Flip work back to rightside out. Then continue to Rnd 5.

Color change
Rnd 5: Wrap your starting stitch around the backpost of any st in rnd 4. Ch 3, 89 bpdc. Sl st to
close. (90 bpdc total).
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same st. 88 sc. Sl st to close. (90 sc total). Fasten off.

Rnd 7: Fasten onto back loops of first st in rnd 6, creating bobbles facing the right side. Ch 1
(counts as first sc throughout), 2 sc in back loops. [Ch 1, dc5tog through both loops of next st, ch
1. 4 sc in back loops] Repeat 17 times. Ch 1, dc5tog through both loops, 2 sc. Sl st through first
st to close. (Makes 18 bobble sts) Fasten off.

Using same color as rnds 5-6.


Rnd 8: Fasten onto any bobble st anywhere on rnd 7. Ch 1, sc in same st. [4 dc in front loops of
rnd 6. Sc in top of bobble st] Repeat 18 times. 4 dc in front loops of rnd 6. Sl st to close.
(90 sts total).
Rnd 9: Ch 2, 89 hdc. Sl st to close. (90 hdc total). Fasten off.
Color change
Rnd 10: Fasten onto backloops anywhere on rnd 9. Ch 2, 89 hdc in blo. Sl st to close. (90 hdc
total).
Rnd 11: Ch 2, 89 hdc. Sl st to close. (90 hdc total). Fasten off.

Rnd 12: Fasten on anywhere on rnd 11. Ch 1, sc in same st. [Spike st to rnd 11, spike st to rnd
10, spike st to rnd 11. 2 sc.] Repeat 17 times. [Spike st to rnd 11, spike st to rnd 10, spike st to
rnd 11. 1 sc. Sl st to close. (90 sts total). Fasten off.

Color change
Rnd 13: Fasten onto backloops anywhere on rnd 12. Ch 2, 89 hdc in blo. Sl st to close. (90 hdc
total).
Rnd 14: Ch 2, 89 hdc. Sl st to close. (90 hdc total). Fasten off.

Color change
Rnd 15: Fasten onto backloops anywhere on rnd 14. Ch 2, 89 hdc in blo. Sl st to close. (90 hdc
total).
Rnd 16: Ch 2, 89 hdc. Sl st to close. (90 hdc total). Fasten off.
Optional: Do a round of sc in front loops between rnds 14 and 15 with an
interesting textured yarn for a pop of texture!

Color change:
Rnd 17: Fasten on anywhere on rnd 16. Ch 2, 1 hdc, 1 fpdc around st in rnd 15. [2 hdc, 1 fpdc
around st in rnd 15] Repeat 29 times. Sl st to close. (90 sts total). Fasten off.

Rnd 18: Wrap your starting stitch around the backpost of any st in rnd 17. Ch 3, 89 bpdc. Sl st
to close. (90 bpdc total).
Rnd 19: Ch 1, sc in same st. 88 sc. Sl st to close. (90 sc total). Fasten off.
Color change:
Rnd 20: Fasten onto back loops of first st in rnd 19, creating bobbles facing the right side. Ch 1
(counts as first sc throughout), 2 sc in back loops. [Ch 1, dc5tog through both loops of next st, ch
1. 4 sc in back loops] Repeat 17 times. Ch 1, dc5tog through both loops, 2 sc. Sl st through first
st to close. (Makes 18 bobble sts) Fasten off.

Using same color as rnds 18-19.


Rnd 21: Fasten onto any bobble st anywhere on rnd 20. Ch 1, sc in same st. [4 dc in front loops
of rnd 19. Sc in top of bobble st] Repeat 18 times. 4 dc in front loops of rnd 6. Sl st to close.
(90 sts total).
Rnd 22: Ch 2, 89 hdc. Sl st to close. (90 hdc total). Fasten off.
Finishing options:
There are two finishing options: all-over trim, and tasseled trim

All-over trim:
Rnd 1: Fasten on anywhere on rnd 22 in
backloops. Ch 3, 89 dc. Sl st to close. (90 dc
total).
Rnd 2-4: Ch 3, [fpdc, bpdc] repeat 44 times.
Fpdc, sl st to close. (90 sts total). Fasten off.

Tasseled Trim:
Rnd 1: Mark 2 sts 30 hdc apart, centered on the back of the hat. Fasten on in backloops only.
You will be working the “long way” between these two marked sts. The 30 st gap will sit on the
nape of the neck. Ch 3, inc dc in same st. 58 dc in blo, inc dc in marked st. (62 dc total).

Rnd 2-4: Ch 3, inc dc in same st. [Fpdc, bpdc] repeat across. Inc dc in last st. (64, 66, 68 sts
total). Do not fasten off after row 4. Continue on:

Finishing Row 4: Ch 5, turn hat to work along the bottom of the hat. Crab stitch across sides of
Rows 1-4 of brim, across the exposed sts of Rnd 22, and across Rows 1-4 of brim. Ch 5, sl st to
first st of Row 4.
Cut a bundle of approx 1yd of different yarns. Fold in half, and slip the center fold through the
ch-5 space. Pull through, and braid to make tassels.
