Inversion- inwersja stylistyczna.

To give emphasis we can invert the subject and the auxiliary verb:

*after the following expressions placed at the beginning of a sentence:

Barely/ Hardly (ever)………… when…

Scarcely……..when….

In/Under no circumstances………

In no way ……………

Never (before)……….

Little ………..

No sooner ………… than………..

Not only……….. but also …….

Not even once………….

Nowhere………….

Only in this way…………

On no account………….

Rarely/ Seldom………..

He didn`t realize that his brother was so ill.

Little did he realize that his brother was so ill.

He seldom visits us.

Seldom does he visit us.

We cannot accept cheques under any circumstances.

Under no circumstances can we accept cheques.

The plumber had just left when the tap started leaking.

No sooner had the plumber left than the tap started leaking.
( when the following expressions are placed at the beginning of a sentence we use inversion in the
main clause:

Only when you see him will you realize how much he has changed.

*in conditional sentences when we put SHOULD, WERE, HAD at the beginning (IF is omitted):

Type 1:

Type 2
If I were you, I`d tell him the truth.

Were I you, I`d tell him the truth.

Type 3

If I had known about his illness, I`d have visited him.

Had I known about his illness, I`d have visited him.
