EMPHASIS - INVERSION

1. Kada zelimo da naglasimo jedan deo recenice, u formalnom engleskom jeziku, obicno pocinjemo
nekim adverbijalom sa takozvanim negativnim znacenjem NEVER,RARELY,SELDOM posle kojeg
koristimo UPITNI RED RECI.

* They will never admit their mistakes. = Never will they admit their mistakes.

*We can hardly ever listen to classical music. = Seldom can we listen to classical music.

* Politicians hardly ever experience what war really feels like. = Rarely do politicians experience what……

2. LITTLE obicno koristimo uz glagole koji predstavljaju znanje I misljenje


( believe,expect,imagine,know,realize,think,understand..) I prati ga upitni red reci.

*We didn’t realize what effect the announcement would have. = Little did we realize what effect the
announcement would have.

* I have no idea what is going on. = Little do I know what was going on.

3. NEITHER se obicno koristi sa nor, ali ne mora uvek

* We wanted neither the book nor the CD. = Neither the book nor the CD did we want.

* I don’t argue with people and I have never been in a real fight either. = I don’t argue with people and
neither have I ever been in a real fight.

NAPOMENA: Kada se LITTLE I NEITHER koriste da kvalifikuju subjekat glagola, nema inverzije:

* Little information was on the subject.

* Neither he nor I understood what was said.

4.NOT UNTIL,NOT SINCE, NOT FOR A MOMENT

5. Izrazi sa ONLY – NOT ONLY….BUT, ONLY WHEN,ONLY AFTER,ONLY LATER,ONLY ONCE,ONLY THEN,
ONLY IN THIS WAY, ONLY BY….ING, ONLY BY CHANCE

*He didn’t only sing in the choir, he played in the school band as well. = Not only did he sing in the choir
but he played in the school band as well.

* We were late and we had forgotten our tickets. = Not only were we late but we had also forgotten our
tickets.

*Only then did they contribute to the Save the Wolves fund.

6.Izrazi sa NO – ON NO ACCOUNT, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, AT NO TIME

7. NO SOONER + THAN – Posle No sooner koristi se upitni oblik nekog perfektnog vremena ( 90% je to
Past Perfect, ali moze I Present Perfect ako je recenica u sadasnjem vremenu I Future Perfect ako je u
buducem) zatim THAN + ostatak recenice u potvrdnom obliku datog vremena.

*As soon as the storm ended, the flood water subsided. = No sooner had the storm ended than the
flood water subsided.

8.HARDLY,SCARCELY,BARELY + WHEN – isto pravilo kao I kod No sooner

* As soon as the storm ended, the flood water subsided. = Hardly / Barely /Scarcely had the storm
ended when the flood water subsided.
