First International Fieldtrip “JESUS HERNANDO MENDOZA” – PERU, 2016.

The first international fieldtrip “JESUS HERNANDO MENDOZA” – Peru, 2016 was
developed since july 5th to July 12th of 2016, in the cities of Cajamarca (Cajamarca
Province) and Huamachuco (Sanchez Carrión Province), north of Peru. The main objective
of this fieldtrip was to know in first hand some of the most important ore deposits in Perú,
and gain some experience in the field of mineral deposits, and how the mining process of
a deposit is developed, especially in a country where this activities are well executed,
besides from encourage future generations of students of Geology in our university to risk
to do this kind of activities.

The fieldtrip included the participation of ten students of geology from our University,
Universidad Industrial de Santander, members of the Society of Economic Geologists
Student Chapter “SEG.UIS”. The activities developed in the fieldtrip where the follow:

On July 6th the participants had to perform some medical exams in the city of Cajamarca
required from all the mining companies, due to the high elevations in which the mines
where located. The participants also attended to the opening event of the fieldtrip, which
was a conference about the Geology of Cajamarca and of the Yanacocha mining district, in
the Yanacocha S.L.R. facilities.
On July 7th the participants had the first visit of the fieldtrip, to the high epithermal ore
deposits of the Yanacocha mining district.
On July 8th the participants had the visit to the mining company Coimolache S.A., to the
high epithermal ore deposits of Tantahuatay.
On July 11th the participants had the visit to the mining company Goldfields La Cima S.A., to
the porphyry Cu-Au ore deposits of Cerro Corona.
On July 12th the participants traveled form Cajamarca to Huamachuco, to visit the mining
company Rio Alto Mining, to the sediment hosted high epithermal ore deposits of La Arena.
During this fieldtrip the participants were able to learn all about the processes of
exploration, reserves calculation, exploitation, Ore recovery, environmental recovery and
social management apply in each of the company mines that where visited in Peru, which
could work as a well example of mining processes to developed in the future for deposits
in Colombia.

During this fieldtrip the participants also were able get to know the employees of each
mine, share knowledge and experiences, which allowed the participants to forge a
working link of support between industry and academy.

All these activities were able thanks to the Stewart R. Wallace Student Chapter Funding
Program, which the Student Chapter SEG-UIS of the Universidad Industrial de Santander
were benefited. The money received from this program was used for the expenses
throughout the filedtrip of the 10 participants, all of them students of Geology from the
Universidad Industrial de Santander, members of the student chapter “SEG-UIS”. The

Huamachuco, the transportation from the hotel to the mines and vice versa, the medial
