General information 1.0

How to read this manual 1.1

This manual provides a detailed description of all the procedures required to ensure the correct
function of the SISMA machine model SGUL/W for the production of universal curb chains. It also
gives information about periodic maintenance to be carried out on the machine. A diagram of the
machine and a list of spare parts in the catalogue are also included.

The machine must be used in accordance with the instructions provided in this Manual :
the Manual should be read carefully before installing and starting up the machine and instructions
should be followed to the letter. Particular attention should be paid to the messages in bold or
marked with a triangle or exclamation mark. If the regulations and recommendations set out in the
manual are followed correctly and maintenance operations are carried out properly the machine
will function safely and well.

This Operating and Maintenance Manual constitutes an integral part of the machine: it
should be kept in good condition and in a safe place for as long as the machine is still in
function. In the event of transfer of ownership the Manual should also be handed to the
new owner.

In this Manual there are 127 pages plus the appendixes of Chapter 15.
The Manual has been organised in such a way as to be as user friendly as possible and all points
have been listed in the index with page and chapter numbers to facilitate the reader. The contents
of the Manual have been organised into chapters (indicated by the first number), and paragraphs
(indicated by the second number after the full stop).

For example in: 1.2 Chapter 1, paragraph 2


1 indicates the chapter to be consulted, chapter 1 "General Information"
.2 indicates the paragraph to be consulted, paragraph 2 in chapter 1
"Validity of the Manual".

In the event that the binding should break, pages may always be re-ordered according to page
numbers or paragraph and chapter numbers.

The present Manual should be updated on an on-going basis and any possible amendments,
additions or modifications made by the Manufacturer should be integrated into the manual.
Any annotations and comments made by the user should be inserted in the spaces provided in the
Manual (“Notes”).

Validity of the Manual 1.2

This manual is valid if the Series number in the Guarantee corresponds to that on the identification
tag posted on the machine (See Points 1.5 and 1.5.1).

Limited circulation of the Manual 1.3

The manual may not be circulated amongst or passed on to third persons. It is only authorised for
use at the workplace of the Client.

1.4 Re-ordering the Manual

The user may ask the Manufacturer for a new copy of the instruction manual. The following information
must be clearly stated in the request:

• the model of the machine


• series number of the machine
• the date of manufacture

set out on the identification tag of fig.1.


A copy of the guarantee or invoice must be enclosed with the above.

for a period of one year, for one function per day shift. Those parts which consist of
commercial components manufactured by third persons are not covered by this guarantee
but are covered by the guarantee of their original manufacturer. The guarantee starts from
the moment the machine is shipped. The guarantee is only recognised if the machine is
used correctly according to the instructions provided in the manual on its use and on periodic
maintenance to be carried out.
Any defects or breakages which take place in the period for which the machine is guaranteed
will be repaired or replaced free of charge by SISMA at their factory in SCHIO. Any defective
parts replaced by SISMA will be removed after they have been replaced by the
aforementioned. Any expenses incurred in transport and shipping of replacement parts are
the responsibility of the client.
In the event that SISMA work should be required to ensure functioning and/or replacement
of defective parts, any expenses incurred by this will be covered by SISMA though the client
is liable for any expenses incurred in travelling and transfer.
Any other possible technical operations carried out by SISMA personnel will be agreed
according to the case in question.
Not included in the guarantee are any materials to be consumed or any materials used in
periodic maintenance or parts which have been damaged by incorrect use of the machine.
Repairs and/or replacements carried out while the guarantee is still in force do not imply
extension of the guarantee. Recognition of the guarantee renders null and void any request
for compensation for any oversight in manufacture.

Machine identification 1.5.1

The machine can be identified by means of a name plate posted on the right side of the machine
base as illustrated in fig.1. The name plate indicates all the data required for identifying the machine
and the EC marking which indicates it has conformed to EC regulations.

Machine documentation 1.5.2

The machine will be supplied to the Client fully equipped with the following documentation which
constitutes an integral part of the machine. Documentation must always be conserved together in
a safe place while the machine is still in use. In the event of a change in ownership the documentation
should be supplied with the machine :

• Report on electrical tests as stipulated in the CEI EN 60204-1.

Technical assistance 1.6

Any routine/periodical maintenance operations should be carried out in compliance with the
instructions contained in Chapter 10 of this Manual.
Any one-off maintenance, replacements of parts, overhauls and repairs to the machine should be
carried out by the Sisma Technical Assistance Service by contacting the Manufacturer at the

quoting the following information taken from the identification tag on the machine:

• Model of machine
• Identification number
• Year of manufacture

Correct information will guarantee rapid and correct response.


• Possible replacements of machine parts must only be carried out using Sisma Original Spare
parts.
• The Sisma S.p.A. Technical Assistance Service is available for any periodical and/or one-off
maintenance operations as well as any form of overhauls or repairs to be carried out on the
machine.
• Partial or total failure to comply with the dispositions for periodical maintenance, use of spare
parts which are not Original and any other form of modification to the machine not previously
authorised in writing by the Manufacturer, renders the Guarantee contractually defined null
and void and relieves Sisma S.p.A of any responsibility for any damage to persons and
or items caused by the machine.

1.7 Glossary of special technical terms used in the Manual

CFD chain sensor = Electronic device used to check presence and variation in chain volume
Facons = Set of shaped tools used to close the link
Slings = Set of cables, chains or belts used for lifting and transporting objects
Supply kit = Parts or utensils supplied with the machine
LED = Diode light which also functions as a display for light on
Focusing optics = Laser beam focusing optical system
Pitch = Distance between one link and the next.

1.8 Terms and abbreviations used

The units of measurement used in this Manual conform to the international SI system of
measurement.

1.9 Global safety aspects


This paragraph describes the safety and accident prevention measures to be taken by the user.

1.9.1 Transport and installation

For instructions on transport, moving the machine and installation, see chapters 4, 5, 6.

1.9.2 Warnings for operators

The user is responsible for informing all those operating the machine of the contents of the Manual.
The user must also ensure that personnel using the machine and personnel carrying out maintenance

1.9.5 Foreseen errors and incorrect use

In order to avoid possible errors and/or incorrect usage, the operative procedures and danger
warnings in the Manual must be understood clearly by all personnel.

1.9.6 List of symbols and warning used

Symbols used on the machine to indicate danger during use and maintenance are described in
Point 2.6.
From now onwards, any signs in bold and accompanied by a triangular sign and
exclamation mark indicate information regarding safety warnings.

1.9.7 Safety prescriptions


Precautionary measures to be taken during use of the machine to ensure its safe function are
described in the manual.

General prescriptions
• Check that the space where the machine operates is free of obstacles, clean and has
sufficient lighting. Minimum lighting required to guarantee operators can see single parts properly
is to be from 280 to 350 lux. Maximum lighting permitted: lighting must not create strobe effects or
shine too brightly so as to distort the vision of the person operating the machine.
• Any intervention on the machine must be carried out by authorised personnel.
• Check that all protections and guards are in place, that all safety devices are present and in
good working order and that they have not been tampered with.
• Eliminate any elements which could endanger the safe function of the machine before using it
and always notify the person responsible for maintenance of any eventual irregularity in function.
• Any tampering with safety devices and circuits is absolutely prohibited.
• Production may not take place when safety devices have not been set or fixed guards not installed.
• The machine must never be left alone when the guards have been dismantled.
• No modification for adaptations of devices/objects not provided for by the manufacturer are
allowed.
• Never use the machine if it is damaged in any way.
• Dangerous maintenance operations which are to take place with increased safety conditions
must strictly be carried out with the type and number of operators prescribed.
• Check clothes worn by personnel operating the machine: keep sleeves well fastened at the
wrist and do not wear clothes with appendages such as ties, scarves, unbuttoned jackets or
torn clothes, clothes which are not fastened or where zips have not been closed to avoid any
risk of these becoming trapped in the moving parts of the machine.
• The electrical board or panel must always remain closed.
• The key for opening the electrical board must be given to a specialised person or person
responsible for the department to which the machine belongs.

Safety prescriptions for the mechanical maintenance operator
To ensure no damage is done to the machine and/or operators, check that no pieces of
equipment or foreign bodies have remained between the moving parts of the machine
after each maintenance or adjustment operation.
• Always keep the area for maintenance operations clean and dry, checking that there are no
spots or spillages of oil.
• Do not allow non-authorised personnel to intervene with the machine.
• Never insert the body, articulations or fingers into the articulated openings or cutting edges of
parts of the machine without guards.
• Never align holes or slots with ones fingers, always use the proper equipment.
• Do not use petrol or inflammable solvents as detergents, always use non-inflammable authorised
commercial and non-toxic detergents.
• Do not use compressed air to clean small parts; in the event that no other means can be used,
always protect the eyes with side shields and limit pressure to 2 bar.
• Never use a naked flame to illuminate the area when carrying out maintenance or checking
operations.

Safety prescriptions for the electrical maintenance operator


• Before embarking on any operation on electrical components, check that the supply has been
disconnected.
• After any operation on the panel, the panel must be closed and locked with the door lock on the
general switch before reconnecting the supply and turning on the machine.
• In the case of incidents caused by electrical current, immediately remove the person (they will
usually have lost their senses) from the parts where the tension is present. Remove the cables
from the electricity supply. If this takes too long, remove the victim with isolated materials such
as a wooden or PVC stick, piece of material, leather and immediately call in medical personnel
and get the victim admitted to hospital.

ATTENTION! Danger of electrocution.


This operation is dangerous: touching someone who has been electrocuted means
that you could also be electrocuted.

Responsibility 1.9.8

Lack of compliance with the instructions contained in the present Manual of use and maintenance
relieves the Manufacturer of all responsibility.
For any information not included or intended in the pages to follow, we recommend the Manufacturer
be contacted.

Required qualifications for operators 1.9.9

The operator is required to have a complete knowledge of the contents of the present manual.
The operator must be instructed in the use of the machine, how to turn it on and off and how to
carry out routine maintenance and must also be fully informed about the risks related to the
presence of the welding Laser.

Presentation of the machine

2.1
General description

High capacity automatic machine for the production of


universal single, double and triple curb chains with rapid
manually operated mechanism to allow the passage from
right curb to left curb, and specifically designed for the
assembly of a Laser system for the purpose of laser
welding of the chain link closure.
High operating speeds result from precision joints,
reduced track dimensions and inert masses, use of
extremely reliable components and reduced, cam heights,
allowing the manufacture of single or double wire chains
from 0.15 to 0.60 mm and triple wire diameters of up to
0.55 mm
Chain quality and consistency are guaranteed by the
insertion of hard metal pins, the capillary distribution of
forced lubrication, high precision mechanical tolerances
and precise wire tension, controlled electronically to
eliminate any inertial tension caused by unwinding of the
bobbin.
The main air blow is assembled on crossed cylindrical
joints which facilitate the positioning of the nozzle for
improved efficiency on multiple chains.
Other accessories for the machine include the third mobile
shaft, chain density sensor, electronic speed regulator Fig. 1a
with anti-jamming device, electronic wire tightener and
low power lamp.
Optional accessories available on request are listed
at Point 12.3.

General test and inspection

Before consigning the machine to the Client, the SGUL/W SISMA machine for curb chain has been
subjected to a breaking in period by the Constructor to ensure the perfect phasing of all mechanical
movements followed by a series of tests to guarantee:

• correct mechanical phasing of the machine cycle


• correct function of mechanical parts and lubrication system
• correct function of electrical and electronic parts and checking of all safety and
protection devices
• correct production of right and left curb chain

Conditions of use as foreseen by the manufacturer 2.4

The SGUL/W model SISMA machine has been designed and constructed for the production of
single, double and triple “curb chains” and cable chain in precious metal wire and brass alloys with
the following diameters: 0.15 to 0.60 mm.
Any other application must be considered to be outwith the aims for which the machine has been
designed and constructed. Any use other than that specified, or not included in the manual is to be
considered “UNAUTHORISED”.
Never elude or de-activate safety protection, either manually or by means of software.
The SISMA mod. SGUL/W machine can be used in industrial areas with temperatures of +10°C ÷
+40°C and a humidity count of 0% ÷ 85% without condensation.In the event that the machine is
equipped with a Laser Generator for link laser welding, see also indications set out at Point 3.3

The Sisma mod. SGUL/W machine must not be used in presence of explosive
sostances or where there is a risk of firebreaking out.

2.5 Space destined for the operator

The operator must work in all the area around the machine in order to carry out control commands,
loading and unload\ing materials, cleaning and ordinary maintenance. Fig. 2 indicates the operating
area used by the operator.

2.6 Safety indications and warnings

The following safety warning signs are indicated on the machine (see fig. 2a):

1) Electrical Tension (code 288012)

Danger signal indicating the presence of electrical tension.


This is located on the lateral rear panel of the machine.

2) Danger of hands or fingers being crushed (code 288006)

Danger signal indicating the danger of one being crushed as there are moving
mechanical parts in operation during tooling of the machine.
This is located on the front part of the machine, on the transparent safety
guard.

3) Wear protective glasses (code 288005)

Signal indicating that protective glasses must be worn during machine


tooling.
This is located at the front of the machine, on the transparent safety guard.

4) Never carry out maintenance with moving parts of machinery (code


288014)

Do not open or remove protective guards when parts of machinery are


moving.
This warning is located on the right hand side lateral part under the

transparent safety guard.

5) Danger of hands and fingers becoming trapped (code 288007)

This warning sign indicates the danger of hands and fingers becoming
trapped in non-protected transmission machinery with timing belt.
This sign is located on the right hand side of the machine under the
transparent safety guard.

6) Presence of Laser beam and radiations (code 288001)


Danger signal indicating the presence of Laser beam and radiations.
.
Handle the spyglass, the fiber and the laser equipment with great care.
This is located on the safety cover.

7) Warnings (code 667017 , 667029)


Users must read all warnings on yellow labels carefully before working on the
machine.
Protection provided on the machine against laser radiation is only effective
for use with one Nd-YAG band with a wavelength of 1064 nm and average
max power of 50 W. The use of other generators over 50 W or with different
wavelengths to that indicated is strictly prohibited.
At no time must the direction of the laser beam be altered from that preset
by the constructor or the position or optic model assembled on the
machine be varied.

8) Read instruction manual carefully (code 288007)

Read this instruction manual carefully before installing and starting up the
machine.
Located at the front of the machine on the transparent safety guard.

2.7 Residual risks
When the machine is functioning normally and the guard is closed, the only risks to be highlighted
are the ones related to the invisible weak laser radiation which may come out of the labyrinth
barriers located at the chain inlet and exit point. Avoid exposure to these openings which are
clearly indicated by special yellow labels posted on the machine.
As the maintenance operator must have access to the machine in order to carry out the tooling and
settings, the machine has been equipped with a key-operated selector button (5 fig.17) which,
when activated, will permit the machine to function at reduced speed with the safety guard (2
fig.13) open, though the laser welding remains inactive (Laser Generator switched off. No laser
beam can be lased).

During this operation the operator must be extremely careful to guard against
the hand or fingers becoming crushed or trapped in the machine.
This operation must only be carried out by the mechanical maintenance operator
who will wear the protective safety glasses when operating with open the safety
guard to protect eyes from accidental breakages of parts of the equipment.
Attention! This obligation applies also if the movement of the mechanical parts
is carried out manually by rotating the handwheel.
The key must be kept by the head of department and only used for the
aforementioned operation by authorised personnel specifically trained for this
purpose MM ME .

2.8 Safety regulations

We recommend the following safety regulations be followed with extreme care:

The personnel assigned the task of using the machine must have had previous
training and be able to carry out the task as dictated by law.
Only allow personnel operating the machine to enter the operating area.
The operator position must be kept clean at all times and free of any possible
obstacles which could limit their freedom of movement.

Before beginning any work on the machine, the operator must be fully informed
about the function of the machine and its controls and must have read and
understood all the technical information contained in this manual.

Only connect the machine to an alternating electrical supply (230 Volt 50/60 Hz).
Check that it has been properly earthed.
The plug is removed:
• in the event of an accident taking place during function.
• before any cleaning or maintenance operations are carried out.
• after use.
Never remove the plug by pulling on the cable for the electricity supply.
Make sure that the electricity supply cable is always straight and never passes

round corners.
Only use extensions which are in perfect condition.
The machine must never be started up when:
• the electrical supply cable has been damaged
• if it has been damaged in any way.
Any maintenance operation must be carried out as described in point 1.9.4, and
all electrical and pneumatic supply must have been switched off.
Never place hands on or use screwdrivers, keys or other utensils on moving
parts.

Electrical and electronical parts must only be repaired by authorised and qualified
personnel.
Repairs carried out incorrectly will incur grave risks for the user.
At no time must the machine be modified to exclude the safety precautions
provided to protect persons operating the machine.

It is recommended that clothing adherent to the body be used and that hair be
covered to avoid the risk of it becoming trapped in the machine and its parts.
Do not operate in conditions which are not safe, in positions which are
uncomfortable and which could cause the operator to lose his/her balance. Rings,
bracelets and chains should not be worn when operating the machine as these
could put the safety of the operator at risk.

On no occasion may the machine be operated when the operator is under


medication, on drugs or under the influence of alcohol as this will reduce the
attention span and vigilance of operating personnel as well as affecting their
reflexes.

No tampering or unauthorised replacement of parts is permitted. Any


replacements of parts must have been previously authorised by Sisma S.p.A.
The use of any accessories, utensils, materials or spare parts other than those
recommended by the manufacturer and/or described in the present manual may
constitute a risk for the operators and/or damage the machine.

ATTENTION! Protection against laser radiation is only effective for one Nd-
YAG laser band with a wavelength of 1064nm and max average power of 50
W. The use of generators with average powers of over 50 W or different
wavelengths to that indicated here is strictly prohibited.
At no time may the direction of the laser beam be altered from that preset by
the constructor or the position or model of optical equipment assembled on
the machine be varied.

The manufacturer will not accept responsibility for damage caused by incorrect use of the machine
or any use which does not conform to the instructions given.

Safety instructions
for use of Laser Generator 3.0

The SISMA machine Model SGUL/W has been designed for the application of a Class 4 Nd-YAG
Laser Generator (Neodimio-Yag) with a wavelength of 1064 nm and average max. power of 50W.

The use of Laser Generators of different type and characteristics from those indicated above with
a maximum average power of over 50 W or with a wavelength different from that indicated is
strictly prohibited.

When the machine is equipped with the Laser Generator, the operator must carefully read the
operating and maintenance instructions of the Laser Generator.

The safety instructions relevant to the use of the Laser Generator and set out in this Chapter do not
however replace the ones supplied by the Manufacturer of the Generator in his operating and
maintenance instructions.

On the safe use of the Laser Generator 3.1

The specification consulted for this Chapter is as follows:

3.2 Important safety warnings

The Laser Generator may only be used by expert personnel trained in safety
techniques in accordance with the recommendations of the Reference
Specifications listed at Point 3.1.

The high intensity Laser Generator is a dangerous piece of equipment (Class 4


laser) in that it emits dangerous radiation not visible to the human eye. During
operations carried out with the ray open there is a risk of serious damage to
eyes and skin. Diffuse radiation is also a risk and therefore the greatest of care
must be taken.

Special protective glasses provided must be worn for the duration of all
operations carried out when laser is on!

Attention! The use of control and regulation devices other than those provided
by the Constructor or different procedures to those indicated in the present
manual can cause dangerous exposure to radiation.

ATTENTION!
The high intensity laser functions at high tensions which can present a serious
risk of death. Repair operations on the laser must only be carried out by expert
personnel with the appropriate authorisation.

3.3 Indications for use

Destined use

The Laser Generator has been exclusively designed for connection to and use with the SISMA
machine Model SGWL//W for the purpose of laser welding of links manufactured in precious metal
or metal alloys.

Any other use or any use which goes beyond that specified above does not conform to the indications
for use provided for by the Constructor of the machine and is therefore classified as “NOT
PERMITTED”.

Uses which conform to indications for use intend the following:

• the observance of all indications provided in the Instructions for Use and Maintenance contained
in the present manual and that provided by the Constructor of the Generator.
• the observance of inspection and maintenance operations

Use which does not conform to indications

In principle the laser radiation produced by the Generator can be used to melt, burn or evaporate
almost all types of material. Certain materials may give off gas and vapours which could present a
danger to the health!
Normal aspiration devices have not been designed to be able to filter these gases and vapours
sufficiently.

Any work on materials not made of metal, in particular work on plastic materials,
is intended as a use which does not conform to the indications of use for the
Generator.
Work area 3.4
The area in which the Generator is to be installed (or the area where the exit opening at the end of
the fibre optic unit is) must guarantee universal electric shielding as specified in the safety regulations
governing the use of laser radiation in force in the Country of use (See Reference Specifications at
Point 3.1).
Danger! Only those persons who have been adequately trained for this purpose
in accordance with the safety regulations for laser radiation as stipulated in the
abovementioned Reference Specifications and are wearing the required
protective glasses may operate in the laser zone.

The light signalling danger due to “Laser Generator in function” must be positioned so it is easily
visible at the entrance to the laser zone.

Responsibility 3.5

No responsibility will be accepted for damage to persons and/or things caused by the following
factors:

• Use of a Laser Generator of different type to that for which the machine has been built.
• Use of Laser Generator which does not conform to its destination of use.
• Improper assembly, function, use and maintenance of the Laser Generator.
• Use of Laser Generator with defective safety devices or safety devices and protection turned
off.
• Failure to observe indications contained in the Manual of Instructions, Use and Maintenance
regarding transport, storage, assembly, function, use and maintenance of the Laser Generator.
• Arbitrary modifications carried out to the Laser Generator.
• Inadequate checking of parts of equipment subject to wear and tear.
• Repairs that do not conform to the Constructors instructions.
• Events caused by foreign bodies or forces of circumstance.

Warnings contained in the operating and maintenance instructions 3.6

• To ensure that the laser Generator is used safely and without any problems the operators
must have read and understood all the warnings contained in this manual and in the
one supplied by the Manufacturer of the Generator, as well as all the safety regulations
set out therein.

• All the operating and maintenance instructions, particularly the safety warnings, must
be followed by all the operators operating the Laser Generator.

• The accident prevention regulations and rules in force within the User's Country must
also be followed, in particular the accident prevention standards for laser radiation as
set out in the Reference Specifications at Point 3.1.

3.7 Responsibilities of user Company

The user Company may only allow the following personnel to work on the Laser Generator:

• personnel familiar with the fundamental regulation on work safety and the prevention of accidents
who have been trained to use the Laser generator.
• personnel who have carefully read, understood and agreed in writing with the chapter on safety
and the warnings contained in the present instructions of use and maintenance.
• personnel trained and instructed as specified in the accident prevention standards in force
regarding the risks involved in the function of laser equipment (See Reference Specifications at
Point 3.1)
• personnel who periodically attend training courses specifically designed for operators of laser
equipment.

3.8 Responsibilities of personnel

All personnel assigned to carry out operations on the Laser Generator are, before starting
work, required to:

• respect the fundamental standards of work safety and prevention of accidents, in


particular the prevention of accident standards for the use of laser radiation as set out
in the Reference Specifications at Point 3.1.

• read and agree in writing with the chapter on safety and the warnings contained in the
instructions for use and maintenance of the Laser Generator.

3.9 Dangers involved in the use of the Generator

Laser Generators are constructed in accordance with the safety regulations in terms of technical
construction. However, improper use may entail danger for the user or for third persons and/or
damage to the Generator itself or other objects.
All recommendations regarding risks connected to the use of lasers in Italy contained in
guides CEI 3849R and 3850R must be observed. Users in other Countries must observe
any corresponding recommendations in force.
The Generator must only be used
• according to the instructions provided by the Constructor of the Generator
• for uses which conform to its destined use
• in perfect conditions from the point of view of safety technique.
Possible failures which could compromise safety must be resolved immediately.

3.10 Organisation

• The user company must provide personnel with the required personal protection (protective glasses
specifically designed for use with this laser, to be used only during maintenance operations on
the open laser).
• All special requirements in accident prevention standards in force in the Country of use must be
observed, in particular the accident prevention standards for laser radiation as set out in the
Reference Specifications at Point 3.1.

Safety devices 3.11

• Before setting the Laser Generator to function, all protection devices must be activated correctly
and in perfect working order.
• Safety devices may only be deactivated when the Generator is turned off and only after the risk of
the latter being turned on again accidentally has been eliminated by disconnecting the machine
from the mains electricity supply.

Information on safety 3.12

• The operating and maintenance instructions must always be kept in the place where the Laser
Generator is used.
• Besides these operating and maintenance instructions, the local and nationwide regulations
governing the accident prevention and the environmental preservation must also be followed. In
particular, the accident prevention standards for use of laser equipment must be followed (See
Reference Specification, Point 3.1).
• All the safety and danger warning signs posted on the Laser Generator must be kept in good
state and legible.

Training of personnel 3.13

• Only personnel who have been instructed, trained and prepared as stipulated in accident prevention
standards in force concerning the risks involved in the function of laser equipment (See Reference
Specifications at Point 3.1) can work on the Generator.
• Personnel still under training may only work the Generator under the supervision of an expert.

Safety measures in the course of normal function 3.14

• Only activate the Generator after checking that all protection devices have been inserted and are
in perfect working order.
• At least once a week, check that there is no visible damage to the Laser Generator and check the
function of safety devices (e.g.: defects to safety circuits, fibre glass conductors of the laser
beam, glass on the protective filters, protection at openings).

Danger resulting from the electric energy 3.15

• Any intervention on the electricity supply must only be carried out by the Manufacturer's
Assistance Service.
• Always keep the Laser Generator closed. Only allow authorized personnel in possession
of the special key to open it.
• In the event that any interventions on live parts are required, it is recommended that a
second person should also be present who will immediately press the main switch to
disconnect the electricity supply in case of emergency.

3.16 Points presenting particular danger

• Potentially dangerous points in the proximity of openings protected by


seals or labyrinth barriers have been indicated with specific yellow
warning labels.

Particular care must be taken to ensure that no laser impulses are emitted when
the laser ray is pointing in the direction of people or objects which are inflammable
or explosive.

3.17 Formation of gas and poisonous vapours

• The laser radiation produced by the Generator can be used to melt, burn or evaporate
almost all types of material. In the event that this is used on materials which do not
conform to those specified, gas and vapours could form which, according to the
composition of the initial materials, may prove to be damaging and dangerous to the
health.
Working with non metallic materials, in particular plastic materials, constitutes
one of the uses which do not conform to those stipulated for the Laser Generator.

3.18 Dangers involved in the use of laser equipment

The Generator is a piece of laser equipment which has been classified as a Class 4 laser.
Any users in Italy must observe the recommendations governing the risks involved in the use of
laser equipment contained in the Guides CEI 3849R and 3850R. Users in other Countries must
observe corresponding standards in force.

GENERAL WARNINGS

The Generator is a laser device with Neodymium-Yag and a high optical radiation power. This laser
radiation has a wavelength of 1064 nm and is located in the infrared area. It is therefore not
visible to the human eye.

This characteristic renders it particularly dangerous in that its invisibility does


not allow for any involuntary defensive reactions of the eye which, if hit, will
suffer irreparable damage.

The human eye is particularly sensitive to the risks involved in infrared laser radiation (invisible), as
this form of radiation is particularly concentrated on the ocular and focused on the retina. Extensive
irradiation of the retina produces extreme local overheating and the burning of retinal tissue which
means a partial or complete loss of eyesight.

It is therefore recommended that the specific protective glasses used for


protecting the eyes from laser radiation be used in the course of all operations
carried out with the laser on (regulation, maintenance, repair)!

In the course of the invisible Nd-Yag laser ray the visible (red) ray of a He-Ne laser is emitted which
is not as powerful. If observed for long periods, secondary visible radiation may cause glare.

DANGER TO EYES AND SKIN

The following cases present an element of danger:


• direct laser ray
• reflected laser radiation
• diffuse laser radiation
The protective glasses required for use with the laser provide protection from direct, reflected and
diffuse radiation. Avoid looking directly at the ray even when wearing the protective glasses. Intense
laser radiation can destroy the protective filter.
In the use of Class 4 laser devices with open ray, all the area of installation is classed as a ‘laser
zone’. In this case, we must bear in mind that neighbouring sectors, separated only by windows,
also become laser zones (eventually also the area outside the building). It is therefore recommended
that the laser zone be limited to the smallest minimum area by using walls or special protective
curtains to contain the area of installation.

All persons inside the laser zone must wear protective glasses specifically designed for
use with the wavelength of the laser irradiation indicated or else they must remove
themselves from the laser zone for the duration of operations carried out with open laser
ray.

The protective glasses must conform to the degree of protection predicted for the exit power of the
laser in question.
Before using the protective glasses for the laser, check carefully that the glasses do not have any
obvious defects. Any exchange of protective glasses with others which may look the same is
dangerous, in that the protective effect of the filter is only effective within a limited field of the
wavelength. Protective glasses commonly used with CO2 lasers are no longer effective, for example,
against the radiation produced by Nd-YAG lasers.
The skin can take significantly more radiation than the eye. However, it too is subject to the risk of
the destruction of tissue through burning according to exposure time and intensity of radiation.
Special protective clothing must be worn to protect the skin.

In case of presumed or certain lesions produced by laser radiation:

• Turn off the laser.


• Immediately inform the superiors, the persons responsible for protective measures for the
laser, the company doctor and the person assigned to laser safety.
• Consult a doctor or a specialised clinic.

ATTENTION! Fire risk!

The high exit power of the Class 4 laser can burn a large quantity of different materials and
therefore, when the ray is open, special fire measures must be taken.
Paper (wiring diagrams, notes or posters hung on the walls), curtains not coated with anti-
inflammatory substances, thin wooden panels and similar materials may all take fire easily on
direct or reflected radiation.

The operations area of the laser ray must not contain containers with solvent substances
or potentially explosive or inflammable detergents even in the course of maintenance.
In the event that solvents and detergents are used, all warnings must be observed and
respected!
Should the laser ray not visible at high intensity inadvertently strike one of such containers
it could perforate it and immediately create conditions for a fire to break out or explosion
to take place.

3.19 Use of a laser device in accordance with the stipulations governing the prevention
of accidents
In Italy, in accordance with the accident prevention standards governing the use of laser equipment,
the Institute of Insurance against Accidents in the Workplace and the Inspectorate of Employment
must be notified the first time the machine is set to functioned.
Any use of the machine in other Countries must observe any corresponding accident prevention
standards in force.

3.20 Personnel assigned to laser safety

For the use of the Laser Generator (Class 4 laser device), the Company must nominate a person
in writing who is expert in matters of safety of laser devices, and has the function prescribed in the
standards in force in the Country of use. For Italy the functions of the Personnel assigned to
laser safety are set out in the guides CEI 1284G and 1381G. For Class 1 laser devices, such
personnel only has to be present when the user is carrying out maintenance operations or for
assistance in the presence of non protected radiation.
This means that the user has shut off all safety switches or activated the key operated switch to
shut off safety devices.
The personnel assigned to laser safety must have the required knowledge to evaluate
and check the risks caused by the laser and has the responsibility to supervise the checking
of these risks.
The person assigned to laser safety assumes total responsibility for the safe use of a laser
device and the necessary protective measures required including those involving the
safety and integrity of the personnel assigned to its use.
The training of personnel assigned to laser safety must be guaranteed by an appropriate form of
training by the Constructor of the Laser Generator or by Companies with the required authorisation
(for example Companies Insuring against Accidents in the Work Place).

4.0 Instructions for transport
4.1 Consignment of the machine
All material is subjected to accurate checking procedures by the Manufacturer before shipping.
On receipt of the machine, check that no damage has taken place during transport and that any
packaging has not been tampered with or parts removed.
In the event of any damage or missing parts the carriers and the Manufacturer should be informed
immediately and photographic documentation of the above produced.
It is also recommended that the package be checked against the order.

4.2 Packaging and removal of packaging

The form of packaging to be used will be agreed upon with the Client in relation to the distance and
means of transport chosen for shipping. The machine may also be transported without packaging.
Packaging consists of a wooden case lined on the inside with waterproof paper.
Machine parts are protected by a hermetically closed plastic container and must be fixed so as to
prevent any horizontal or vertical movement. Parts may be fixed by wooden beams or foam
packaging.
The information noted in Point 4.7 is located on the outside of the packaging.

For the removal of packaging, see the following indications.


Take the packaged machine as close as possible to the area destined for installation.
Remove the wooden cover and plastic and free the machine.

How to dispose of packaging


Wood: this is non-polluting material which should, however, be suitably re-cycled.
Plastic: this material can pollute the environment and therefore should not be burnt (as it
produces toxic fumes), nor should it be disposed of in the environment. It should
be disposed of according to the regulations governing this by law.

4.3 Dimensions, mass and centre of gravity

The wooden case which is used to pack the machine weighs 140 kg and its dimensions are mm
950x750X820 as illustrated in fig. 3. Great care must be taken with its centre of gravity which is
located along the axis, 380 mm above the base. The wooden case which is used to pack the
machine and the base, weighs 230 kg and its dimensions are mm 1800x750X820 as illustrated

4.4 List of parts


Packaging consists of a wooden case containing:

• the machine
• supply kit (see paragraph 2.3).

4.5 Regulations governing warehousing

If the machine is not used immediately on arrival, it must be warehoused in such a fashion that
none of the packaging is exposed to the elements or to humid conditions.
The machine and accompanying equipment must be kept in a dry area where there is no humidity.
Minimum temperature permitted: -5°C.

Provisions to be made by the user 4.6

Before the arrival of the packaging with the machine SGUL/W, the user must have provided lifting
equipment and form of internal transport adequate for the purpose of carrying out operations in the
manner illustrated in Point 4.8.

4.8 Lifting points and means of transport

The case used to ship the machine must be transported to the site chosen for installation either by
lifting the slinged case with a hook (see fig. 5) or by means of forklift truck (see fig. 6).
The packaging must be slinged using good quality slings (not damaged or deteriorated in any way)
with a maximum capacity greater than the weight of the machine + packaging as indicated in Point
4.3.

4.9 Safety regulations for transport


During unloading operations from the means of transport used to transport the machine and for
handling operations within the factory, particular attention must be paid to the following safety
regulations:

• During lifting all the area round the machine must be considered a danger zone.
• Keep the load as low as possible during movement to ensure greater load stability and improved
visibility.
• Any potentially mobile elements or any elements which will not be able to resist their own weight
must be fixed solidly to the machine so as to prevent parts becoming detached or a loss of
balance.
• Do not remain in the area of the package or machine turnover range.
• Use means and equipment suitable for the mass and volume of the packaging (see Point 4.3
ff.).
• Take care while positioning the hook units and slinging as illustrated in fig. 5 or fig. 6.
• The Manufacturer is not responsible for breakages during transport of the machine after it has
been consigned.

Preparation of place of installation 5.0

Physical characteristics of place of installation 5.1

The place of installation of the SISMA machine mod. SGUL/W does not need to comply with any
special requirements. It can operate in almost any industrial area within the limits as indicated in
Point 2.4 and the following characteristics.
A suitable base is required which will be able to support the weight of the machine which is 140 kg
(machine + chain recovery plate+ base), on all 4 support feet.
The place of installation must have the usual characteristics of an industrial site: 230 V earthed
electricity supply, compressed air system with minimum pressure of 5 bar and suitable lighting so
as to ensure control commands, warning signs and indications which can be seen easily.
To prevent problems with instability caused by accidental knocks, the machine should be anchored
to the floor by means of the EA M10 Fischer screw anchors as illustrated below in figure 7. The
machine can be anchored down using the two holes provided on the base of the machine according
to the technical instructions provided with the anchor screws. The fixing screws must be tightened
in such a way as to lightly pre-load the rubber supporting pads underneath the support base.
In the event that the machine has not been supplied with the support base (optional), it should be
placed on a floor or support able to support the weight of the machine and ensure stability so as to
prevent any possible danger of the machine being overturned.

6.0 Preparation of the machine
6.1 Checking for damage

When the machine arrives (with or without case, as the case may be), the Client must check for
any obvious signs of damage occurring from droppages or the package having been knocked over.
Should there be any signs of the above, the Client must immediately inform the transporter and
immediately contact the supplier before opening the packaging.

6.2 Plan for installation

When positioning the machine in the operating area, any obstacles, connections to electricity supply
and space available must be taken into consideration as indicated in the following plan.
Adequate space must be provided for the movement of materials and operation space for
maintenance operations, ventilation, checking or routine interventions (see fig. 8).

When the machine and the base (as the case may be) have been removed from the packaging,
they may be placed in the operating area by means of the slinging and lifting gear, after first having
assembled the 4 eyebolts supplied as illustrated in fig. 9 and 10.

6.4 Assembly on base

See fig. 11 for the lifting system which allows the machine to be mounted safely on the base by
means of the 4 eyebolts provided. The machine must be positioned on the base in such a way
as to ensure the antivibration pads are into the border of the base itself.
The base rests on the antivibration disks provided thus allowing the machine to be levelled. See
Point 4.1 for instructions on how to fix the base to the floor.

NOTE: After the machine has been positioned and assembled on the base, remove the 4 eyebolts
indicated in fig.11. Keep the eyebolts in the tool case in the event that the machine should be
moved again in the future.

6.5 Connection to electricity supply
Ensure that the electrical equipment complies with the safety regulations as provided for
by the CEI 64-8 specification in force within the European Community. As far as non-European
Countries are concerned, ensure that the electrical system is in compliance with the safety
regulations in force. The electrical supply must be able to support the maximum input power provided
for the machine equal to 0,3 kW. The machine is usually able to work on a voltage and frequency of
230 Volt and 50Hz (60 Hz upon request). The user must provide a suitable disconnecting switch
for the electricity supply at the initial part of the machine as well as efficient protections against
indirect contacts/overcurrents.
Once connected, the user must check the following:
• that the voltage and frequency of the supply mains correspond to the ones indicated on the
identification tag of fig.1. The wrong tension could damage the machine
• that the supply mains be sufficiently earthed.
Carry out all connections to the supply mains with the utmost of caution when there is no tension
present in the network and in accordance with all safety regulations.
Connection to the network may only take place after proper earthing has been carried out.
The machine is connected to the electricity supply by means of a cable leading from the machine.
Connection to the power supply system must be carried out by the electrical maintenance
operator (EMO).

Connection to pneumatic system 6.6

The entrance to the pneumatic system of the SISMA machine mod. SGUL/W has been equipped
with a device for regulating air pressure.
Make reference to fig. 12 for all the following operations.
The machine has been equipped with a pressure gauge no. 1 to check the feed air pressure and a
quick exhaust cock no.2 connected to the inlet no. 3 of the compressed air which allows quick
disconnection or restoration of the pneumatic feed.
Connect the air supply tube leading from the compressor or pneumatic distribution system to the
quick connection no.4, provided in the form of a flexible nylon supply tube with an external diameter
of 6 mm and internal diameter of 4 mm.
Adjust the ring nut no. 5 on the pressure regulator, taking care to pull it upwards before turning and
set a pressure of min 5 - max 6 bar; then press down into block position.
Check that the air flow through the system is set so that the pressure will not drop under 5 bar
during machine function (minimum flow rate 70 l/minute).

ATTENTION! Only clean, dry air free from impurities, humidity and residual oil from the
compressor must be used for air supply to the machine. Pump connection must be carried
out by the mechanical maintenance operator (MMO).

6.8 Measures to limit noise levels and vibrations

To limit noise and vibration during function, the following steps must be taken when the machine is
being installed:

• Carefully level the machine by means of the antivibration feet of the base
• Check that the antivibration feet of the machine and the base are fastened tightly
• Avoid placing objects, equipment or anything which could vibrate on the machine

6.9 Measures to avoid dispersal of substances

The lubrication oil ( approx. 2,5 litres) is collected into the special tank on the machine base. This
should be replaced periodically (see table for periodic maintenance at Point 11.3.1 ). Any old oil
should be disposed of according to the instructions of Point 13.1.

8.0 Start up and use
8.1 Tests and checks to be carried out before starting up the machine

Before the machine is consigned to the Client it is carefully assembled and subjected to a breaking-
in period to ensure that all the mechanical moving parts function perfectly. Before starting up the
machine it will be necessary for some rounds to be carried out slowly to check that the machine is
moving correctly according to the cycle described in the block diagram in Point 8.5.
Attention! If the machine is already tooled and the wire is threaded-in, proceed as indicated
in Point 9.3 with great care so as not to damage the equipment.

8.2 Machine controls

The machine has been provided with an electronic speed regulator on the panel of fig.17 located at
the front of the machine.
The controls on the front panel of fig.17 are the following:

1. red luminous general switch (line disconnecting switch)


2. red STOP button (stops rotation of the machine)
3. green START button (starts rotation of the machine)
4. red mushroom-headed button with emergency block
5. key-operated switch selector to enable machine functioning with open safety guard (the key of
the selector must not be removed when safety devices are disengaged)
6. indicator for machine speed of rotation and LEDs indicating the state of the solenoid valves
and CFD
7. speed regulator to control the machine speed (within the adjustable speed field)
8. switch to activate the solenoid valve “A”
9. switch to activate the solenoid valve “B”
10. switch to activate the sensor for presence of chain CFD
11. LED indicating the state of the solenoid valve A (LED on = solenoid valve activated)
12. LED indicating the state of the solenoid valve B (LED on = solenoid valve activated)
13. LED indicating the state of the sensor for presence of chain (LED on = intervention of the
safety device)
• On the right side of the base, in vertical position, there is a key-operated switch selector (4 fig.
13) which allows activation of the Laser beam welding process, when the machine is connected
to a Laser Generator.
Attention!
For safety reasons provided for by the accident prevention regulations in force and
relevant to the risks resulting from the use of Laser products, the laser shot (and
therefore the welding of the link) is not possible when the upper protection is open.

8.3 Switching on the machine

After the machine has been connected to the electricity and pneumatic supply as indicated at
Points 6.5 and 6.6, open the compressed air cock no. 2 (fig.12), turn the machine on by means of
the general switch no.1 (fig.17) and check that the emergency button no.4 (fig. 17) has been released.
Manually rotate the handwheel anticlockwise very slowly to effect a few complete rounds of
the cam shaft and check that the machine cycle described at Point 8.5 is phased properly.

Attention!
If the machine has been equipped with the wire already threaded in, before manually activating
the handwheel, check that the chain has been threaded correctly into the coil protruding
from the spiral unit or held by the pincers, that the electronic wire tensioner is ON (side LED lit up
and not flashing), that the switch no. 10 (fig.17) is set to position ON and that the switches nos. 8
and 9 (fig.17) are set to position ON if a double or triple chain has been mounted. After this manual
check which must be carried out with the safety guard up, lower the safety guard, set the
potentiometer no.7 (fig.17) to minimum speed and then start the machine by pressing the start
button no. 3 (fig.17). Gradually turn the potentiometer no.7 (fig.17) until the machine is working at
the desired speed. In the event that the machine should not start up, check the calibration of the
chain sensor as indicated in Point 9.12.

Stopping the machine 8.4


The machine may be stopped in the following ways :

• By setting the general switch to the OFF position, switch no. 1 (fig. 17).
This operation shuts off all the feeds and stops all moving parts of the machine.

• Pressing the emergency button no. 4 (fig.17)


This operation shuts off all the feeds and stops all moving parts of the machine.

• Pressing the Stop button no.2 (fig.17).


This stops all the moving parts of the machine but the machine remains connected to
the electricity supply and ready to re-start function. To restart the machine, press the
START button no.3 (fig.17).

8.5 Machine cycle

When rotating, the link formation shaft moves the pin no. 2 ( fig. 26) which winds the wire around
itself to form a spiral which, at each turn of the machine, takes a coil out of the spiral unit no. 5 ( fig.
26).
This coil is taken by the pincers no. 4 (fig.36), cut by the knives nos. 1 and 2 (fig.36) and separated
from the spiral.
The pincers now move back and take the coil to closure position inside the façons no. 1 (fig.39)
which close in and press the two open ends of the coil within their impressions to make a closed
link.
The pincers no. 4 (fig.36) then rotate ( rightwards or leftwards ) to give twisting and yield to the link.
After this the façons open and the pincers rotate and move forward to link threading position.
The link will now be centred perpendicular to the coil protruding from the spiral unit.
At this point of cycle ( if the machine is connected to a Laser Generator ) the machine sends
the signal for the laser shot and therefore for the welding of the two closed ends of the link.
As soon as, after a new turn, the link is threaded by the spiral, the pincers open and move back to
let the chain fall onto the next coil, and the cycle then repeats.

9.0
Tooling and regulation of the machine
The machine must be prepared for tooling assembly according to the indications at Point 1.9.4.
In order to ensure rapid and accurate tooling of the machine, follow the instructions listed below in
the order that they appear. In order to carry out and check some of these operations correctly, the
machine may sometimes have to function with upper protection guard (2 fig.13) up. For this purpose
the machine has been equipped with a key operated switch (5 fig.17) allowing partial disengagement
of safety devices. When the key has been inserted and the switch set to ON, press the START
button (3 fig.17) to operate the machine at reduced speed which may not be adjusted by the operator.

These operations must only be carried out by mechanical maintenance


personnel (MM).
The selector key (5 fig.17), which allows partial disengagement of safety devices so
these operations may be carried out must be kept by the Section Head and only
consigned to persons with appropriate training who have been authorised to carry out
the following operations. The key must be removed from the machine after tooling or
regulation and must be kept in a safe place.

In the course of these operations the mechanical maintenance personnel (MM) must
take the greatest care to avoid hands or fingers being crushed or trapped by moving
parts of machinery.

When working with upper protection guards (2 fig.13) open, protective safety glasses
must be worn at all times in the event of accidental breakages of parts of equipment.
Attention! This also applies even if mechanical parts are being moved manually
by means of the handwheel.

9.1
Preparation for tooling

In order to facilitate tooling operations, the following units must be removed in order to prepare the
machine:

• air blow unit (see fig. 22)


unscrew the clamp screw (1 fig.22)
• rotating intake pincer support (3 fig. 23)
unscrew the screw (1 fig.23) and remove the pin (2 fig.23)
• facon support pincers (3 fig. 24)
unscrew screws (1 fig.24) and remove pins (2 fig.24).

9.2 Assembly of spiral unit

Insert cylindrical part of spiral no. 1 (fig. 25) into the bed of the support no. 2 (fig. 25) and turn the
opening of the spiral channel upwards so that the front is parallel to the machine level. Block in this
position, assemble the cover no. 3 (fig. 25) and fix with the two screws no. 4 (fig. 25).

9.3 Wire insertion and pin assembly

Load the wire bobbin onto the support pin provided no. 1 (fig. 25b) at the rear of the machine, taking
care that the wire winds on clockwise. Do not fix the internal end of the wire to the bobbin while
winding wire onto the bobbin as the wire could tense up at the end of winding between bobbin and
spiral unit, causing possible damage to equipment and the electronic wire tightener. Provisionally
assemble the knurled pawl no. 1 (fig. 26) on to the pin no. 2 (fig. 26) and block with the dowel no. 3
(fig. 26). Loosen the stop ring nuts no. 5 (fig. 25) and unscrew until they can be moved right along
to the left. With the help of a pair of small pincers, bend the end of the wire to form a hook small
enough to fit inside the spiral unit no. 4 (fig. 26). Insert into the first opening of the spiral unit with the
opening of the hook facing the operator and at the same time insert the pin into the pin support shaft
until it can be hooked on to the wire. Manually rotate the pin in the direction of winding on
(anticlockwise) and keep the pin pressed down inwards all the time and rotate until the pin has
been completely covered by the wire and is just showing above the spiral unit. The wire should be
kept slightly tight during manual rotation of the pin in order to make the operation easier to carry out.
The pin should then be locked in position with the dowel no. 6 (fig. 25). Pass the wire through the
transmissions provided: wire tightener lever wheel no. 2 (fig. 25b) and wire return wheel no. 1 (fig.
25c) and turn on the electronic wire tightener. Use the knurled knob of the tightener no. 3 (fig. 25b)
to regulate the tension of the wire in accordance with the diameter of the latter to ensure it has been
tightened sufficiently and guarantee correct winding onto the pin.

Manually rotate the handwheel anticlockwise, carry out 5 or 6 complete machine cycles to create
uniform winding on of wire onto the pin, taking care to stop the cycle in the max. forward position of
the pin. This position can be inferred by the position of the flat spring no. 7 (fig. 25) on the tooth of
the pin support shaft no. 8 (fig. 25). In this position check that the stop lever no. 1 (fig. 25a) is
positioned onto the respective tooth of the pin support shaft no. 2 (fig. 25a).
Should this not take place, lever no. 1 (fig. 25a) should be regulated in the following way:
• remove the left protection guard, loosening the two screws fixing it in place
• check that the machine cycle is in the abovementioned position and if not, manually set to this
position
• keep the roller no. 12 (fig. 25) right up against the respective cam on the toothed sector and
adjust the fastening screws no.13 (fig. 25) to block the lever no. 11 (fig. 25) after it has been
inserted into the tooth of the pin support shaft no. 2 (fig. 25a).
• reassemble the left protection guard.
Now adjust the ring nuts no. 5 (fig. 25) setting the beat against the surface of the support no. 2 (fig.
25) and close the one against the other with the keys provided.
A pre-load of around 15° should guarantee the wire adheres to the pin.

9.5 Regulation of protrusion of the pin

Manually rotate the handwheel anticlockwise to complete a full cycle of the machine and stop when
the flat spring engages with the pin support shaft no. 8 (fig. 25) which corresponds to the max.
forward position of the pin.
Loosen the fastening dowel no. 6 (fig. 25). Manually rotate the pin and move to radial position so
that the axis of the first complete link outside the spiral unit is parallel to the axis of the intake pincer
as illustrated in fig. 27.
In this position the end of the pin should protrude from the spiral unit so as to hold one loop (around 1 x
ø wire) as illustrated in fig. 27a. Block the pin in this position with the fastening dowel no. 6 (fig. 25) and
adjust the position of the knurled pawl no. 9 (fig. 25) setting the beat axially on the rear ring nut of the pin
support shaft. Ensure the reference marks coincide exactly and tighten the dowel no. 10 (fig. 25). This
operation allows the pin to be set back to exactly the same position after any eventual dismantling and
can also be used for reference purposes for eventual corrections.

Assemble the pincers no. 1 (fig. 28) onto the pincer supports no. 2 (fig. 28) taking care to note the
reference marks punched onto the pincer supports. The left pincer is assembled onto the point
with 1 reference mark. The right pincer is assembled at the point where there are two reference
marks. Block the pincers by tightening the screws no. 3 (fig. 28), taking care to ensure they have
been inserted right into the end of the socket. Check that the reference mark on the rear part of the
wedge no. 4 (fig. 33) is facing upwards. Assemble the pincer support onto the rotating sleeve with
the reference marks facing upwards (see fig.28), insert pin no. 4 (fig.28) and check that pincer
facings correspond exactly when closed. Assemble and tighten the block screw for the pin no. 5

Particular care must be taken with the positioning of the link formation units and rotating pincer to
ensure that the pincers can close the loop without moving it as illustrated in fig. 29.
To carry out this operation, adjust the axial translation of the link formation unit no. 1 (fig. 30),
loosening the screws no. 2 and adjusting the adjustment screw no. 3 through the hole provided on
the left protection guard, until the pin has moved into the centre of the axis of the rotating pincer
(open) as illustrated in fig. 29.

The vertical position of the rotating pincer unit must be regulated by loosening the block screws no.
1 (fig. 31) and adjusting the vertical adjustment screw no. 1 (fig. 32) until the pincers take up the
loop right in the centre (see fig. 27). Adjust the screw no. 5 (fig. 33), to regulate the forward position
of the rotating pincer so that the pincer impressions correspond to the link of the spiral (see fig. 29).
Adjust the end forward course screw no. 2 (fig. 32) against the flange of the sleeve. The rotating
pincers with wire impressions must be regulated so that they almost close when the wire is not
inserted (pincer surfaces almost touching - see fig. 28). This operation can be carried out by
adjusting the adjustment nut no. 1 (fig. 33) which, once adjusted, should be stopped by the lock nut
no. 2. During the loop intake phase the pincers should be open and at a distance of 1.5 ÷ 2 x
diameter of wire from each other. This distance should be regulated by adjusting the adjustment
screw no. 3 (fig. 33). After insertion the pincers open to release the link. During this phase the
distance between pincer facings should be 2 ÷ 2.5 x the diameter of the wire. This adjustment can
be carried out by lightly loosening the nuts nos. 2 and no. 3 (fig. 34), and adjusting screw no. 1
which acts directly on the pin of the cam in question as required.

During the loop intake phase, the degree of inclination of the pincers must follow that of the spiral.
This can be achieved by adjusting the small block no. 2 (fig. 31) located on the side of the rotating
pincer, after loosening the screws no. 4 (fig. 31). Correct positioning of the link formation unit and
the rotating pincer unit as well as accurate angular position and opening of pincers allow the loop to
be taken up without moving the latter. The remaining adjustments of the rotating pincer unit are
dependent on the regulation of the facons unit and will therefore be described at a later stage in the
text.

Insert the horizontal knife no. 1 (fig.35) into the socket provided and position axially in correspondence
to the loop as indicated in fig. 36, provisionally blocking it with the screws no. 2 (fig. 35). Regulate
the angular position by means of the screw no. 4 (fig. 34) to allow it to move freely into the space
between the loops. Looking at the knife from the right side of the machine, regulate the vertical
position so that the cutting edge is centred in the middle of the spiral as indicated in fig. 37. Block in
position by tightening the screws no. 2 (fig. 35).

Cut the loop with the cutter right outside the spiral unit. Insert the vertical knife (1 fig.38) into the
socket provided on the support (2 fig.38) and block with the screws no.3 after positioning it vertically
so that it rests on the flat surface of the horizontal knife (1 fig.36), as indicated in fig.37. To facilitate
this operation the vertical knife support (2 fig.38) should be placed provisionally over the horizontal
knife by loosening the screws (4 fig.38) fixing it in position. Bring the vertical knife unit over to the
right again so it does not interfere with the loop. Manually rotate the handwheel anticlockwise to
make a loop. Position the vertical knife by moving its support (2 fig.38) so that the impressions of
the two knives form a perfect semi-circle around the wire as indicated in fig. 36. Block the unit in
this position by tightening the screws (4 fig.38). Manually rotate the handwheel anticlockwise and
check that the spiral does not touch the knives when it rotates and adjust the screw (5 fig.34) so
that the horizontal knife moves just enough to cut the wire.

The corrector (5 fig.38) counteracts the thrust produced by the cutting of the link and pushes the
upper part downwards to aid closure.
The machine can still function well without the help of the corrector which could also be assembled
after all tooling and setting operations. Assemble the corrector (5 fig.38) into the socket provided on
the pincer (6 fig.38) and position so it comes alongside the upper part of the loop as indicated in
fig.36 and 37a. Block in this position by tightening the screws (7 fig.38). Manually rotate the handwheel
anticlockwise and check that its movement does not interfere with that of the upper blade during
the cutting operation (1 fig.38). If necessary bend it lightly to adapt its function.

Assembly and regulation of facons unit 9.8

Manually rotate the handwheel anticlockwise, bring the rotating pincers as far back as they will go
(towards the operator) so they do not interfere with the facons unit. Before assembling the facons,
the facon support pincers must be dismantled (2 fig.39) from the unit after removing the pins (4
fig.39). Preliminarily loosen the screws (5 fig.39) and rotate the pin holder washers (12 fig.39).
Assemble the facons (1 fig.39) onto the facons support pincers (2 fig.39) ensuring they slot right
into the end of the socket and block in position by tightening the screws (3 fig.39). Reassemble the
pincers onto the support, insert the pins (4 fig.39) and block with washers (12 fig.39) and respective
screws (5 fig.39). Use a magnifying glass to check that the impressions on the facons match
perfectly when the facons are closed. At this point the unit should be adjusted provisionally so
that the axis of the facons coincides with the rotating axis of the pincers as indicated in fig. 40. To
make this adjustment, loosen the two rear screws (7 fig.34) which block the unit and the front
screw (6 fig.39). Adjust the pinpoint adjustment screw (7 fig.39) to regulate the transversal position
of the unit with the help of a magnifying lens until the axis of the closed facons coincides with the
axis of the closed pincers. The vertical position of the facons unit must be adjusted provisionally
before loosening the front screw (8 fig.39), by means of the pinpoint adjustment screw (9 fig.39) so
that the axis of the impressions on the facons coincides with the axis of the pincers. The
abovementioned regulations should then be checked with the formation and closure of a link. The
closure of the facons must be preliminarily regulated by means of the screw (10 fig.39) so that they
press lightly against each other on closure. Manually rotate the handwheel anticlockwise and
complete the phases of loop intake and cut and move the rotating pincers to the link closure phase
of the facons. Use the screw (6 fig.33) at this point to regulate the position of the rotating pincers so
that the link (still open) held by the pincers enters perfectly into the impressions of the facons.
Manually continue to complete the cycle and the facons will close the link. Once the facons have
closed, move the cycle slightly back by rotating the handwheel clockwise until the facons have
partially opened so that, with the help of an appropriate form of magnification, the closure on the link
can be checked. Should you note any malformations, burrs or maladjustments of the latter, correct
the adjustments by means of the screws (6 fig.33), (7 and 9 fig.39) or the vertical position of the
wire cutter. If necessary repeat these operations several times, taking care to remove the link from
the pincers each time and opening the pincers manually by means of the lever (8 fig.33).

9.9 Regulation of torsion and insertion phases

After ascertaining that the settings for link closure as described in paragraph 8.8 ensure the link
has closed satisfactorily, manually rotate the handwheel anticlockwise and the rotating pincers will
rotate about 90° to give torsion (right or left) and yield to the link. The machine has been equipped
with a rapid action manually operated mechanism which allows the position of the switch plate
(1 fig.40a) located under the rack of the sleeve rotation console to be adjusted manually for production
of left or right curb chain.
Fig.40a illustrates the manner in which the switch plate should be positioned for right torsion of
the link for the production of right curb chain. This positioning of the switch plate (1 fig.40a) engages
the lever for rotation to the right (2 fig.40a) of the sleeve / rotating pincers controlled by the two-part
cam no.3 (fig.44).
Fig.40b illustrates the position the switch plate should be set to for left torsion of the link for the
production of left curb chain. This positioning of the switch plate (1 fig.40b) engages the lever for
rotation to the left (3 fig.40b) of the sleeve / rotating pincers controlled by the two-part cam no.4
(fig.44). The lever for rotation to the right (2 fig.40b) must in this case be blocked in the set position
by assembly of the locking plate provided with the machine. To change the position of the switch
plate (1 fig.40a), unscrew the conical point block screw (4 fig.40a) and rotate manually for 90°
either clockwise or anticlockwise to engage the lever corresponding to the desired direction of
torsion. Tighten the block screw (4 fig.40a) in the new position, ensuring that the conical point
enters the positioning niche on the plate rotation pin. Correction of the angle of torsion of the link
can be made by means of the adjustment screw (5 fig.40a) for right torsion and by means of the
screw (6 fig.40a) for left torsion. The angle of torsion on the link should be about 90°. Correct angle
torsion can only be checked on production of a piece of chain long enough for quality to be checked,
which means that this regulation will usually be readjusted after chain production has commenced.
During torsion, to obtain satisfactory link closure the link held by the rotating pincers should be
guided and pressed against the facons (link closure pliers). The thrust is usually produced by the
rotating pincers / sleeve in the final phase of torsion and must be maintained up until the facons
begin to open. The movement that generates the thrust on the link is produced by the cam no.9
(fig.44) which controls the shaft (9 fig.33). The thrust on the link is regulated by screwing in or
unscrewing the screw (12 fig.33). To obtain satisfactory closure the yield on the link at end torsion
should also be regulated by accurate adjustment of the small block (1 fig.40c) on the respective
sleeve rotation control cam. Manually rotate the handwheel anticlockwise and the machine cycle
will completely open the facons while the pincers rotate and move forward to take the link to the
position for insertion. This position of the link can be regulated by means of the screw provided (13
fig.33). The insertion must be carried out so that the loop coming from the spiral unit inserts the link
held by the rotating pincers exactly in the centre without any interference.
Once insertion has been completed the cycle ends with the opening of the rotating pincers and
release of the chain link which remains attached to the last loop to come from the spiral unit. The
flat spring (7 fig.25) and stop lever (1 fig.25a) engage with the respective teeth on the pin support
shaft (2 fig.25a). The machine is now ready to begin a new cycle.

9.10 Check and regulation of lubrication

The machine has been equipped with a force feed lubrication system by means of a gear pump
with flow rate of 0,9 litres at 1500 revolutions/min controlled by the drive shaft.
The lubrication system consists of flexible nylon tubing, which cross special holes drilled into the
structure of the various units to reach all mechanical parts needing continuous lubrication.
The lubrication circuit has been equipped with an overpressure valve which offloads into the oil
tank in the aluminium base.
On the left side of the tank cover, in an easy-to-access position, there are four flow regulators
(nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4).

• The flow regulator 1 (1 fig.40a) regulates the quantity of lubricant reaching the lever pins, the pin
of the sector gear, the control rods and the slide supporting the compressed air blows.
• The flow regulator 2 (2 fig.40a) regulates the quantity of lubricant reaching the distributor on the
cams and the pincer support of the facon unit.
• The flow regulator 3 (3 fig.40a) regulates the quantity of lubricant reaching the sleeve / rotating
pincers unit and the wire roller on which the wire is lubricated before entering the spiral unit.
• The flow regulator 4 (4 fig.40a) regulates the quantity of lubricant reaching the cut unit and the
pin support shaft of the spiral unit.

Through the flow regulator 3 (3 fig. 40a) it is possible to reduce the quantity of lubricating oil
towards the rotating pincers / sleeve assembly. This regulation may be useful when double chains
are processed using the compressed air nozzles, as the latter may cause nebulisation and dispersion
of lubricating oil inside the safety cover when too much lubricating oil is used..

Completely change the lubricating oil every 6 months with the oil recommended at Point
11.5. Drain the oil through the special hole provided by unscrewing the plug (2 fig.40b) on the right
side of the base.
During this operation remove any fragments of precious metal, which may have deposited during
the machine function, by thoroughly cleaning and washing the oil tank.
Remove the net filter on the oil suction pipe and wash it thoroughly. Replace it if necessary.

The quantity of lubricant necessary for changing the oil is of approx. 2,5 litres.
The waste oil should be disposed of according to the indications of Point 13.1.

We recommend that the level of the oil in the tank and the presence of oil flow on all
moving parts be checked visually on a daily basis through the special level indicator (1 fig.40b)
located at the right side of the base.

9.11 Function and regulation of compressed air blow

The machine has been equipped with a series of two compressed air nozzles (1 and 2 fig.42a).
The two nozzles linked to the pneumatic system are controlled by two solenoid valves (14 and 15
fig.33) on the front of the machine which receive the signal to open from two optical sensors (1
fig.41) activated by the disks (2 and 3 fig.41) on the cam shaft. The function of the compressed air
blow is to facilitate the insertion of the link onto the loop of the next when the space for insertion is
required. This is usually noted in the production of multiple link chains or chains which are particularly
dense. The compressed air blow can be inserted or removed by activating the respective switches
(8 and 9 fig.17) on the front panel in fig.17.
The latter must only be used according to the type of chain to be produced and when indispensable.

1) The production of single chain does not require the use of air blow. If necessary the air blow A
(1 fig.42a) controlled by the disk (2 fig.41) and solenoid valve (15 fig.33) can be used to ease
separation of link from the pincers and aid insertion into the loop during insertion. Regulation of the
amount of air from the nozzle can be achieved by adjusting the adjustment dowel (3 fig.42a) on the
end of the nozzle support. The diameter of the air exit nozzle must be proportional to the size of
chain assembled on the machine. Usually a diameter of 0.8 mm adapts well to a medium small
range (e.g. 0.15 – 0.35). During setting the air blow A (1 fig.42a) may be turned off by setting the EV-
A switch (8 fig.17) to OFF (led (11 fig.17) off). The nozzle should be right next to the profile of the link
intake pincers and must not interfere with the rotation of the latter. The nozzle can be positioned by
means of the joints and block screws on the unit itself (see fig. 22). The chain on which the air blow
is directed should move towards the knife unit. The air blow should start as soon as the rotating
pincer returns from torsion and should continue until insertion and intake have been completed.

2) The same applies for production of double chain. The nozzle should be positioned so that it
pushes the free link of the chain as far forward as possible towards the spiral, leaving the maximum
space possible for insertion.

The downwards movement of the chain is deviated to the left by means of the adjustable hook
provided (1 fig.42b). This facilitates pincer intake of the link and creates sufficient space for this
operation, facilitating forward movement of the free link during insertion.
When regulating the hook by means of the screws (2 and 3 fig.44b), take care that the latter do not
interfere with the forward movement of the facons support unit.

3) For the production of triple chain proceed as for double chain with the addition of lateral blow (2
fig.42a), controlled by the solenoid valve (14 fig.33) which in turn receives the signal from the disk
(3 fig.41). The function of this blow is to move the free links backwards during the facon closure
phase, thus avoiding any crushing or deformation of the former. Regulation of the quantity of air
from the lateral nozzle (2 fig.42a) is carried out by adjusting the flow regulator with a small screwdriver
(16 fig.33).
During setting the air blow B (2 fig.42a) can be turned off by means of the EV-B switch (9 fig.17)
which should be set to OFF.

9.12 Setting the chain sensor

The machine has been equipped with a chain sensor no. 1 (fig. 43) which stops the machine in the
event of fallen chain or single linking. The sensor should be regulated in accordance with the type
and dimensions of the chain assembled on the machine. Regulation is carried out as follows by
using a small screwdriver to adjust the screw no. 2 (fig. 43).
If the LED no. 3 (fig. 43) is on, turn the adjustment screw anticlockwise until the LED goes off. Then
turn the adjustment screw clockwise until the LED turns on and turn the screw another half round.
If the LED was off at the beginning of setting, complete the second half of regulation as described
above.
The sensor can be turned off by means of the switch no. 10 (fig. 17) on the control panel:
ATTENTION! When the sensor is at OFF it does not stop the machine in the event of falling
chain.
If LED no. 13 (fig. 17) is on this indicates that the sensor has intervened following falling chain or
single linking.
If the cause activating intervention of the sensor (falling chain, single linking, critical regulation) is
resolved, the LED does not memorise the signal and turns off.
A regulation with narrow setting margins (less than half a round of a screw turned clockwise
after the LED has come on during setting) could cause machine stoppages which are not
visualised on the LED no. 13 (fig.17).

Replacing the wire spool 9.13

In case the wire spool should need replacing because the size of the wire has changed or has
finished, proceed as follows:

• Use a cutter to cut the wire entering the spiral unit and remove the spool from the support pin no.
1 (fig.25b).
• By means of the knurled knob no. 9 (fig.25), manually rotate the pin in the winding direction (anti-
clockwise) until the remaining wire comes completely out of the spiral unit.
• Loosen the dowel no. 6 (fig.25) and extract the pin until it can be removed from the spiral unit.
• Place the new wire spool onto the special support pin no. 1 (fig.25b), checking that it rotates
clockwise when the wire unwinds, and then follow instructions at point 9.3 without loosening the
limit stop ring nuts no. 5 (fig.25) which have already been adjusted during the machine tooling and
setting operations.

Function of sensors and check devices 9.14

Sensor for chain presence


This sensor stops the machine when the chain falls or its size has changed (e.g.: when it changes
from double to single chain). It is activated or deactivated through the switch no. 10 (fig.17). See
Point 9.12 for instructions on its calibration.

Sensor to check end of wire


This sensor is part of the electronic wire tensioner and it stops the machine rotation when the lever
no. 4 (fig.25b) moves to back limit stop.

Device for saving the compressed air


When the machine has been left standstill (without a complete rotation of the handwheel) for more
than 2 minutes, the solenoid valves no. 14 and no. 15 (fig.33) are automatically closed. The air
blows are reset by pressing the Stop button no. 2 (fig.17) or automatically by rotating the handwheel.

Machine antifriction device


Should the machine stop functioning because of jamming or excessive friction, the machine Stop
mode is activated after approx. 6 seconds.

Regulation for the production of cable chain (rolo chain) 9.15

The operations required for this regulation must be carried out after the machine
has been disconnected from the mains supply and after the pneumatic system
has been blown down by means of the rapid discharge valve provided (2 fig.
12).
All safety measures detailed at the beginning of this chapter must also be
observed.

The SGUL/W machine can also produce single, double or triple cable (rolo) chain by using the two-
part cam provided code 620601 with the machine (See Point 2.3).

The Equipment and Mechanical chain recovery plate (PRC) or electronic chain recovery plate
(PRC/F) of the optionals available on request (See Point 11.3) should also be used.

Disconnect the machine from the mains supply and empty the pneumatic system by means of the
rapid discharge manually operated valve (2 fig.12).

Prepare the machine for right torsion of the link (rotation to the right of the sleeve / rotating pincers)
and position the switch plate (1 fig.40a) as illustrated in fig.40a according to the instructions detailed
in Point 9.9.
This positioning of the switch plate (1 fig.40a) engages the lever for rotation to the right (2 fig.40a)
of the sleeve / rotating pincers as for production of right curb chain.
As such, if the machine has been mechanically prepared for right torsion of the link or if the machine
has been mechanically prepared for the production of right curb chain as instructed in Point 8.9,
the regulatory operations of the machine for the production of cable chain can begin from here as
the switch plate (1 fig.40a) will already have been positioned as indicated above.
Dismantle the rear lever protection guard and manually rotate the handwheel anticlockwise to
position the cam shaft to allow access from the rear of the machine for the two block screws on the
cam in 2/2 no.3 code 620762 (fig.44).
Dismantle the abovementioned cam in 2/2 no.3 from the cam shaft by unscrewing the two screws
blocking it onto the shaft.
Assemble the cam in 2/2 code 620763 (optional) in its place with the hub turned to the left (towards
the handwheel) and position axially so that the roller of the lever (2 fig.40a / 8 fig.34) is in the centre
of the course of the cam contour and provisionally block in position on the shaft by tightening the
two screws.
Set the angular position of the cam to set its timing and block on the shaft by tightening the two
screws.
Correct timing is achieved when the pincers gently rotate first to the left and then to the right
after link closure at the facons to give yield to the wire and straighten the link so that after the facons
have opened the wire will remain perfectly closed and level.

This completes mechanical preparation for production of cable (rolo) chain.

The machine cycle described in Point 8.5 will now carry out yield and straightening of the link during
torsion.
Manually rotate the handwheel anticlockwise to complete a few cycles of the machine completed

by the forming of the loop at link insertion to check the above.
Reassemble the rear lever protection guard before checking all the screws are present and screwed
in correctly on the parts involved in the operation.
The machine may now be reconnected to the mains supply and pneumatic system and turned on
and prepared for tooling according to the instructions in Points 9.0 and 9.1.
Assemble the tooling for the production of (SGF/F) single cable chain, (SGF/F) double chain or
(SGF/T) triple chain according to the instructions in this chapter from Point 9.2 to Point 9.8.
Regulation of link yield can be carried out by adjusting the screw (5 fig.40a) used for altering pincer
rotation or wire yield.
Manually rotate the handwheel anticlockwise and the machine cycle will completely open the facons
while the pincers rotate and move forward to take the link to the position of insertion.
In this part of the cycle, shortly before insertion, use an appropriate form of magnification to check
the closure and form of the link which should appear as regular and level as possible.
The position of insertion can be adjusted by means of the screw provided (13 fig.33) as indicated at
Point 9.9.
Assemble the mechanical chain recovery plate (PRC) or electronical chain recovery plate (PRC/
F) onto the machine according to the instructions contained in the Manual for Use and Maintenance.

9.16 Assembly and regulation of the horizontal laser optics

To carry out these operations, safety rules for use of the Laser Generator set
out in Chapter 3 should be followed to the letter.
In particular, Safety Warnings of Point 3.2 must be followed.
Assembly of the laser beam fibre optics and connection to the peripheral
focusing optics must only be carried out after the machine and the Laser
Generator have been switched off.

Fix the laser optics unit support ( 2 fig. 48 ) to the machine base by means of the two screws ( 3 fig.
48 ).
Assemble the laser optics fastening plier ( 4 fig. 48 ) onto the support ( 2 fig. 48 ) by inserting the pin
with the screwed graduated ring nut ( 6 fig.48 ) into the hole to be found on the support; insert the
angular positioning pin of the plier ( 5 fig. 48 ) into the hole located between the heads of the two
angular adjustment dowels ( 8 and 9 fig. 48 ) after having loosened the security dowel if necessary
(9 fig. 48).
Put the neck of the vertical adjustment ring nut ( 6 fig.48 ) flat against the surface of the laser optics
unit support ( 2 fig.48 ) by pressing down the plier ( 4 fig.48 ); moderately tighten the dowel ( 7 fig.
48 ) regulating the braking pad located inside until the rotation of the ring nut is properly braked.
Put the security dowel ( 9 fig. 48 ) flat against the angular positioning pin ( 5 fig. 48 ).
Loosen the screw ( 10 fig. 48 ) and insert the cylindrical neck of the laser optics ( 1 fig. 48 ) into the

Insert the laser beam fibre optics ( 11 fig.48 ) through the inlet sloping tube to be found at the back
of the fix metal protection.
Connect the fibre optics trailing ( 12 fig. 48 ) to the focusing optics ( 1 fig.48 ) by inserting it into the
special pipe fitting of the optics and manually screw down the hexagonal ring nut ( 13 fig.48 ).
During these operations, the operator will handle the laser beam fibre optics ( 11 fig.48 ) with great
care and will not touch anything with the fibre head so as to avoid causing any damages or
dirtying the fibre head.
Cleaning and surface finishing of the head surface of the laser beam fibre optics are essential
conditions for the connection which should be carried out with the utmost of care so as not to
compromise perfect function of the laser welding system.
Position the machine cycle to welding point, at the end of the facon opening after the link closure
and twisting phase.
Turn on the Laser Generator and switch SHUTTER selector to position OFF to activate the emission
of the red beam.
Let the cylindrical neck of the laser optics ( 1 fig.48 ) slide into the hole of the loosened clamping
collar ( 4 fig.48 ), and regulate the optics focus ( red spot ) so that it is exactly onto the welding point
of the link closure. Slightly tighten the screw ( 10 fig.48 ) of the collar to block the optics in position.

• Regulation of the optics vertical position is obtained through the graduated adjustment ring nut (6
fig.48 ).
When this regulation is carried out, the angular positioning pin of the plier ( 5 fig.48) should be
allowed to move freely on the vertical plane and therefore the security dowel ( 9 fig.48 ) should be
loosened.

• To carry out the optics angular regulation, properly adjust the two opposing dowels ( 8 and 9
fig.48 ) so that the red spot of the beam is focused exactly on the welding point of the link closure.
On completion of regulation, block the position of the reference dowel ( 8 fig.48 ) by tightening the
respective locknut. All this to ensure quick repositioning of the optics after disassembly.

On completion of regulations, before starting up the machine, manually rotate very slowly the
handwheel anticlockwise to check that the focusing optics ( 1 fig.48 ) does not interfere at all
with any moving mechanical component positioned in the immediate vicinity ( corrector tool,
corrector tool support connecting rod, facons ).

The red beam emitted by the laser source is visible but is not dangerous for human eye. The
operator is anyway recommended not to observe it for long periods, since it may cause glare as
indicated in the Safety warnings at Point 3.18.

9.16.1 Assembly and regulation of the vertical laser optics ( Optional )

To carry out these operations, safety rules for use of the Laser Generator set
out in Chapter 3 should be followed to the letter.
In particular, Safety Warnings of Point 3.2 must be followed.
Assembly of the laser beam fibre optics and connection to the peripheral
focusing optics must only be carried out after the machine and the Laser
Generator have been switched off.

Fix the unit support to the machine base by means of the 2 M5 screws.
Assemble the laser optics (1 fig.48a) onto the support (2 fig.48a) and position the square part at
approx. 1 mm from the support (2 fig.48a): slightly tighten the clamping screws (3 and 4 fig.48a) so
as to manually move the optics.
Point the optics towards the welding point and check that the optics does not interfere physically
with the other mechanical parts. Focus on the welding point by loosening the two dowels (5 fig.48a)
and tighten the screws (3, 4, 5 fig.48a).
Carry out the millimetric centring through the regulations (6 and 7 fig.48a) with the machine stopped
in welding standby.
When operating on the regulations (6 and 7 fig.48a), it is necessary that the clamping screws no.8,
located under the unit (fig.48a), be slightly loosened.

Regulation of the sensor for laser shot 9.17

To carry out this regulation, safety rules for use of the Laser Generator set out
in Chapter 3 should be followed to the letter.
In particular, Safety Warnings of Point 3.2 must be followed.

The machine has been equipped with a ring (1 fig.49) which transmits to the Laser Generator the
signal to shoot by exciting a sensor (2 fig.49).
This signal must coincide with the beginning of the welding dwell (downward end of course of the
twisting rack / end of pincer rotation).
Any regulation to anticipate or postpone the laser shot, must be carried out by slightly rotating
clockwise or anticlockwise the ring (1 fig.49) after having loosened the security dowel on the latter.
Screw down the security dowel on completion of the regulation.
Whenever the sensor is excited, the red LED (3 fig.49) located on the sensor comes ON.

Any air blow for chain positioning must be stopped during the welding phase so as not to
compromise the results of the operation.

11.0 Maintenance and repair
11.1 General recommendations for maintenance and repair operations

All cleaning operations, maintenance, replacement of parts and possible repairs


should be carried out periodically to ensure correct machine function and guarantee
safe working conditions. The abovementioned operations must be carried out
when the machine has been disconnected from the electricity supply and after
the pneumatic circuit has been offloaded by means of the manually operated
rapid offload valve (2 fig.12).

These operations must only be carried out by the mechanical maintenance


operator (MMO) and the electrical maintenance operator (EMO).

Before attempting any intervention read the instructions contained in the present manual
carefully.

Any interventions which do not conform to the safety instructions listed here
may incur grave risks for operators and/or objects involved.

•To guarantee maintenance of perfect machine function and safety conditions, the operations
indicated in the Table on Periodical Maintenance Operations at Point 11.3.1 must be carried out to
the letter at the intervals indicated in the table.

•Any replacements of spare parts must only be carried out using Original Sisma Spare Parts.

•The Sisma S.p.A. Technical Assistance Service is available for any form of periodical and/or
one off maintenance operation as well as for any form of overhaul or repair to the machine.

•Sisma S.p.A. will not accept any responsibility for malfunction and/or possible breakages of the
machine nor will it accept any responsibility for personal injury and/or material damage in the event
that the abovementioned dispositions should not be respected.

In the event that any of the dispositions provided for periodical maintenance, use of Original Spare
Parts and any other modification carried out on the machine without written authorisation from the
Manufacturer should not be observed in part or whole, this will invalidate the Guarantee defined
in the contract and relieve Sisma S.p.A. of any responsibilities for personal injury and / or
material damage caused by the machine.

On completion of cleaning or maintenance operations and repairs, before starting


machine function following the indications at Point 8.3, ensure that all tools (especially
those used on the inside of the machine) and any parts which have been replaced be
removed from the machine. Particular care should be taken with screws, nuts and
washers which were loosened to allow access to internal parts of the machine
which should all be re-tightened and checked.

Check that all the safety devices set out at Point 6.7 are present and in good
working condition.
Check that all graphic signs and safety signs shown in fig.2a, Point 2.6, are present, in
good state and legible.

Routine maintenance 11.2

1) Lubrication
The machine has been equipped with a force feed lubrication system by means of a gear pump
with flow rate of 0,9 litres at 1500 revolutions/min controlled by the drive shaft.
It is recommended that the level of the oil in the tank and the presence of oil flow on all
moving parts be checked visually on a daily basis.

2) Cleaning
It is recommended that general cleaning of the machine be carried out on a weekly basis;
check in particular the façon support block (fig.39) where fragments of wire may deposit.

Periodical maintenance 11.3

1) Checking oil level


Check the oil level through the specila oil window located at the right side of the base at intervals
indicated in the table at Point 11.3.1 and, if necessary, top up oil with lubricating liquid as indicated
at Point 11.5.

2) Checking the lubrication system


Check functioning of the lubrication system at intervals indicated in the table at Point 11.3.1.
Check that oil reaches all the mechanical moving parts. If necessary, adjust the oil flow by
following the indications of Point 9.10.

3) Checking presence of safety devices


Check at intervals indicated in the table at Point 11.3.1, that all the safety devices provided are
present and functioning on the machine as indicated at Point 6.7.

4) Checking presence of safety signs


Check, at intervals indicated in the table at Point 11.3.1, that all the safety signs of Point 2.6 are
present and clearly legible.

5) Checking the motor brushes


Check at intervals indicated in the table at Point 11.3.1, the wear and tear of the brushes (contact
carbons) of the d.c. motor. If necessary replace them by using new brushes of the same quality
and section as the original ones.

Disposal of dangerous substances 13.0

Disposal of special liquids 13.1

Using the SGUL/W machine may produce special waste products. Any residuals from industrial
work, agricultural activity, commercial, handicraft and services, not similar in quality or quantity to
urban refuse are considered to be special waste products. Obsolete machinery or machinery in
state of deterioration is also considered to be a form of special refuse. On Italian territory, the
Decree issued by the President of the Republic of 23 August 1982 states that any loading or offloading
of exhaust oils, special waste and harmful toxic waste produced in industrial or crafts works must
be registered with the authorities. In Italy oils, special waste products and harmful toxic
substances must be disposed of by authorised companies.
In all the other Countries the user must conform to the laws in force.

14.0 Machine demolition

14.1 Instructions to be followed for the machine demolition

Dismantling must be carried out by authorised and qualified personnel.


Safety indications detailed in the present manual must be followed at all times
when the machine is scrapped.

The machine is a property; to be demolished follow the provisions provided by the laws in force in
the country of the final user. Before demolition request the inspection from the appointed authority
and consequent report. Disconnect the machine from the electric and pneumatic system.
Disassemble each single component and subdivide them into groups according to the material
they are made of. The machine is made up of steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminium and
plastic components.
Proceed to the scrapping according to the laws in force in the country of the final user.
Provide for the destruction of identification plates and of the instructions manual of the machine.
