Instrument Overview
The Burris Gravity MeterTM (BGM) is an automated, high precision land gravity meter. Each BGM is built around a
handcrafted, metal, zero-length spring. ZLS springs have extremely low hysteresis and drift rates. A beam arrestment
protects the meter during transportation to insure precise reading. ZLS clamping mechanism alleviates the hysteresis
endemic to meters not offering a clamp. Made from all metal components, the BGM is the most rugged and precise
gravity meter on the market. The meter has worldwide range and a reading resolution of 0.0001 mGal.

High precision readings can be taken within one minute under normal field conditions. The V-Grav application
comes pre-installed on an Android™ tablet. The application allows the user to visually monitor the beam and levels
during a reading. Setting up surveys with sequential station numbering is easy with the V-Grav template feature. Data
can be viewed, stored in memory, stored on a memory card, downloaded, or just e-mailed.

The V-Grav control system allows the user to choose the level of precision needed for each application. This allows
the meter to be used for micro-gravity and larger regional or geodetic surveys. Lower precision results in faster reading
times, allowing more stations to be logged in a day. Higher precision allows meter to be used for the most demanding
microGal surveys.

The Burris Gravity Meter™ contains the sensor, electronics and battery in an all-in-one, easy-to-handle unit. The
BGM is sealed to keep out the weather so you do not have to worry about sudden rain or dust storms.

Small in size, with the lithium-ion battery, the meter weighs 13 pounds (5.9 kgs). With one battery the meter will last
on standby for 16 - 18 hrs. and operate for 14 hrs. at 23°C.

The sensor is sealed and temperature controlled to shield it from atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature
changes. Use of the thermostatic controlled oven and special insulation allows the meter to be operated in ambient
temperature ranging from -15° to +50°C. A lower range option of -45° to +50°C is available.

1
Ceramic electronic levels are used to ensure accurate and reliable gravity measurements. The levels are orthogonally
mounted on the sensor and have a displayed resolution of one arc-second. Output of the levels can be monitored
graphically during readings. Real-time off-level corrections are automatically calculated for ease of use in the field.

The Burris Gravity Meter™ leveling system is fast and easy to use. The leveling legs are incorporated into the body
of the meter. A leveling base plate is also provided for use in areas without a solid surface to place the meter up on.
Under normal field conditions, the BGM can be precisely leveled for microGal (μGal) readings within 30 seconds
with the aid of real-time off-level corrections.

Calibrated and Non-Calibrated Screw Meters

ZLS offers two models of the Burris Gravity Meter™ : Calibrated and Non-Calibrated Screw. Both meters are identical in
construction and have the same automatic reading resolution of 0.0001 mGal. The only difference is that one meter has a
calibrated screw and the other does not.

▪ Calibrated Screw Meter

The Calibrated Screw meter is intended for users who routinely survey large geographic areas, mountainous regions
or continental surveys. ZLS calibrates the micrometer screw at discrete 50 mGal points over the entire working
range of the screw. With the Calibrated Screw meter, the dial can only be used at calibrated points for large
geographic surveys. The Calibrated Screw meter can also be used like a Non-Calibrated Screw meter for short range
surveys or stationary site measurements.

▪ Non-Calibrated Screw Meter

The Non-Calibrated Screw meter is intended for users with short range surveys and/or stationary site measurement
requirements. The micrometer screw can be set to any position, then locked for an observation. The Non-
Calibrated Screw meter can be used for surveys larger than 50 mGals by tying the points together. For Secular
Earth-Tide measurements, a station version of the non-calibrated screw meter is modified for lower range and
higher internal precision.

Powering Up the Meter

The Burris Gravity Meter is shipped unpowered, with the batteries removed and must be connected to a power source
before it can be used. The meter can be connected to the supplied 12V power supply or a charged battery for power.

Plug the 12V power supply into house power and plug the coaxial connector into the lid “Power” connector. The
green light on the power supply will be illuminated indicating that power is present. The LED lights on the lid should
illuminate, then after a few hours, start cycling independent of each other.

Turn the system power switch to the ON position and wait 30 minutes for the electronics to stabilize before setting
up the meter.
• It is good practice to allow the meter to stabilize at the operating temperature for 24 hours before use.
• The meter should always be kept powered if possible, even during storage. Failure to do so will result
in higher meter drift.
• Make sure the power plug is firmly pressed down and the threaded seal nut is securely tighened.
Failure to do so will cause the meter to lose power and functionalty.

Installing a Battery
1. Remove the rubber weatherproof battery compartment cover by pulling up on the tab.
2. Place a battery into the battery compartment, making sure that the connector matches the position of the plug
at the bottom; be sure the battery is seated firmly against the bottom of the compartment.
3. Install the battery compartment cover.

11
Charging a Battery with the Lithium-Ion Battery Charger
1. Plug in the battery charger.
2. Insert the battery with the connector matching the position in the charger. The face of the charger displays
three lights indicating charge, calibrate and error/needs recalibration. Whether a light is blinking or solid
shows the state of the battery.
a. Green flashing Battery charging
b. Green solid Battery fully charged
c. Blue flashing Battery in calibration mode
d. Blue solid Battery fuel gauge calibration complete
e. Red flashing Battery fuel gauge in need of calibration
f. Red solid Error; battery needs to be replaced
i. Approximately 4.5 hours are required to charge a completely discharged battery depending on
the condition of the battery.
ii. See the included information literature for more details regarding the battery charger.

Android Tablet Battery

The Android tablet is shipped fully charged. As with all new electronic devices, this Android tablet will come with a
USB cable and a charger unit. Any time the tablet is not being used, it should be put on auxiliary power and turned
off completely.
• V-Grav app and all saved data will not be erased if the tablet runs out of battery power.
• A fully charged tablet should last approximately 10 hours of continuous use. For longer surveys, put
the tablet to sleep or power it down between points.
• In the event that the tablet loses the app and/or the parameters, please see “Chapter 6: Meter
Maintenance and System Calibration – Installing and Restoring V-Grav” for more details.

Setting Up the Meter

Setup Outline
The following is an outline of the steps required to setup a gravity meter for the first time. If the meter has been
taken off power, been in storage or has not been used for an extended period of time, please refer back to “Chapter
3: Powering Up the Meter” before proceeding with this chapter. Please note that the meter must be plugged into a
power source for 24 hours prior to setting the meter up for stability in the meter.
1. Settings / Meter Connection
2. Meter Setup
a. Set Stops / Reading Line
b. Setting the Level Zero Position
c. Setting the Level Gain Position
d. Calculate Beam Scale Factor
e. Calculate Level Correction Parameters

Establishing a Meter Connection via Bluetooth

From the V-Grav main menu, select the Settings button. Scroll down to the bottom of the System Parameters tab,
select the Bluetooth button and then select the Serial Number of the meter to make a connection. Once the meter
is connected to the application you are ready to perform the meter setup.
• If V-Grav is a new installation or has been installed on a different tablet than the standard issue, you
must first pair the device to the meter before running the V-Grav application. Go into the Settings
of the Android tablet, select the Bluetooth tab, scan for the BGM serial number, and tap on it to pair
the meter.

13
Meter Stop Setup
In this step you will be setting the upper and lower limits of the Beam Galvanometer (Galvo(s)). Once these limits
are set, you will be inputting the frequency values for the limits into the tablet. V-Grav will use these values to
determine the Reading Line (midpoint of the beam galvo referred to as the null position).
• Things You Will Be Doing:
▪ Setting Duty Cycle (10%, 50%, 90%)
▪ Turning the Dial to Null the Beam
▪ Observing the Beam Galvo
▪ Adjusting the Beam Zero and Gain Potentiometers (Pots)
▪ Entering Values and Accepting

Steps
1. Level the cross and long level and unclamp the meter.
2. From the V-Grav main menu, select the Meter Setup
button, then select Set Stops/Reading Line tab.
3. Press the 50% button, then turn the dial to null the beam
(place the needle in the center of the galvo).
a. To unlock the dial, turn the thumbscrew (located
above the dial) counterclockwise until it stops.
Turn the dial until the beam galvo indicates it is at
the null position. Remove backlash with 1 dial
turn counterclockwise and approach the reading
clockwise.
b. If you need to lock the dial for a field reading, turn
the dial until the zero aligns with the white line.
Turn the thumbscrew clockwise until it stops.
Remember to take the backlash out.
4. Press the Start Reading button at the bottom of the
screen.
5. Press the 10% button and observe the minimum position
of the beam galvo needle.
6. Press the 90% button and observe the maximum position of the beam galvo needle.

14
7. Turn the Beam Zero pot (Red “7” on the diagram to the
right) until the minimum and maximum positions of the
needle are equal distance from center.
8. Turn the Beam Gain pot (Red “8” on the diagram to the
right) until the needle is on the last galvo division for either
10% or 90%. Repeat steps 3 - 6 until the needle moves to
the ends of the galvo scale for 10% to 90%. Small
adjustments are recommended.
9. Press 90% and enter the Beam Frequency value for the
Maximum Stop.
10. Press 10% and enter the Beam Frequency value for the
Minimum Stop.
11. The Reading Line is automatically calculated. Press Accept
to store the stop and reading line values. These values can
be viewed in the Meter Parameters screen under the Settings menu.

Setting the Level Zero Position

For the most precise reading, the gravity meter needs to be level. However, over time the electronics drift and the
level positions need to be established again. The objective is to find the position on the galvo which produces the
maximum gravity reading. This is by far the most difficult part of maintaining a gravity meter, but once learned,
setting the levels for accurate and quality gravity readings will come like second nature.
• Things You Will Be Doing:
▪ Setting Duty Cycle
▪ Turning the Dial to Null the Beam
▪ Observing the Beam Galvo
▪ Taking a Reading Using Single Observation
▪ Tilting the Meter at Different Positions
▪ Adjusting Level Zero and Gain Pots

15
Steps
1. Level the cross and long levels and unclamp the meter.
2. From the V-Grav main menu, tap the Meter Setup button;
the Read Meter/Set Duty Cycle tab should be selected by
default.
3. The New Duty Cycle (%) text field has “50” in it by default.
Press the Set button; the Current Duty Cycle value should
turn to 50.0. Even if the value is already showing 50.0, it is
good practice to press the Set button one time to make sure
that the Current Duty Cycle is actually at 50.0%.
4. Turn the dial to null the beam (place the needle in the center
of the galvo).
Remember to take the backlash out (more details in
“Chapter 5: Operating the Meter – Removing the
Backlash from the Dial”)

5. Return to the main menu, then select Single Observation.

6. Make sure that the check box for “Use non-calibrated points”
is checked, then enter the Dial Reading to the nearest whole
number.
a. The last digit on the counter corresponds to the tenth
decimal place; so, for example, a counter reading of
34273 and a dial reading of 3 is read as 3427.30
counter units.
b. For the Dial Reading value, “3427” would be entered.
7. Select Station observation and press Accept.
8. Select the “+” button at the top of the screen to add a new
station.
9. Fill in the parameters and press Create.
10. Choose that station and press Accept.

16
11. Wait for the BGM to take a reading. Press the More button
as many times as needed until the Standard Deviation
(STD-DEV) and Beam Error (BEAM-ERR) values are
within ±0.0050 mGals.
a. In certain situations, due to environmental noise,
these two values may not ever settle to within the
above mGal range.
b. Try using the two different Filter Sample Sizes to
reduce the noise. Use your best judgement on when
it is stable and move on with the procedure.
12. Record the Observed Gravity (Obs-G) reading as the Zero
(0) reading.
13. Tilt the meter using the Adjustable Level Legs and set the
Long Level galvo to -25 (for 100 division galvos) or -10 (for
40 division galvos (older meters)). Make sure that the Cross
Level is centered. Press More until STD-DEV/BEAM-
ERR stable out. Record the OBS-G value as the -LL reading.
14. Now, tilt the meter the other way using the Adjustable Level
Legs and set the Long Level galvo to +25 divisions (or +10). Make sure that the Cross Level is centered.
Press More until STD-DEV/BEAM-ERR stable out. Record the OBS-G value as the +LL reading.
15. Subtract the two readings from each other. If the difference between the two readings is within .005 mGals,
then the Long Level is set. If the difference is larger than .005 mGals, a correction is needed:
a. Set the Long Level back to center.
b. Tilt the meter 1 galvo division in the direction of the most positive tilt reading.
c. Zero the Long Level needle by adjusting the Long Level Zero pot. Make sure that the Cross Level
is centered.
d. Repeat steps 12 - 15 until the difference between the two tilted readings is within .005 mGals.
16. Center the Long Level and repeat the procedure for the Cross Level. Be sure to keep the Long Level in the
center when adjusting the Cross Level.

17
Setting the Level Gain Position
This step is required so that 25 on a 100 division or 10 on a 40 division galvo is equivalent to 60 arc seconds of tilt. Also,
this is required so that when the Off-Level Correction Procedure is done, the correct sensitivity of the levels is set, and the
graphically displayed bullseye level will work properly during readings.

Steps
17. Take the difference from each of the tilted readings and the Zero reading for both Cross and Long level. If
the difference is less than or greater than -0.0420 ± 0.0040 mGal, the gain needs to be adjusted.
18. Make sure that the level needle is at +25 divisions (or +10) and adjust the corresponding Gain Pot according
to the following:
a. If the difference is lower than -0.0420, then increase the gain by putting the needle
~1 galvo division further away from the center.

b. If the difference is greater than -0.0420, then decrease the gain by putting the needle
~1 galvo division closer to the center.

19. Center all galvos, repeat steps 12 – 14 to record the respective Obs-G readings and then repeat steps 17 and
18 (if a correction is needed).
20. When finished, exit the Single Observation mode by pressing the Exit button.

15 Subtract the two readings from each other (higher value - lower value)
0.1872 - 0.1357 = 0.0515 This is greater than 0.0050, so it needs a
correction.
15.a. Set Long/Cross Level to center of galvo.
15.b. Tilt Long/Cross Level 1-3 galvo divisions in the direction
of the higher value, so put the galvo needle to +1-3 (to the + side).
15.c. Use the Long/Cross Level Zero Pot to put the needle back to center
15.d. Repeat Steps 12-15 until the difference is within .0050.

15 Subtract the two readings from each other (higher value - lower value)
0.1637 - 0.1589 = 0.0048 This is less than 0.0050, so the level zero is set.

0.1637 - 0.2198 = -0.0561 ∆ = -0.0561
Since both of these differences are not within
±0.0040 of -0.0420, it needs a correction.
18 With the level positioned at +25 galvo divisions (or +10), adjust the needle
using the Long/Cross Level Gain Pot accordingly:

14 Tilt meter to +25 (+10) on Long/Cross Level and take Obs-G 0.1804
17 Take the difference from each tilted reading and the Zero reading
0.1763 - 0.2206 = -0.0443 ∆ = -0.0443
0.1804 - 0.2206 = -0.0402 ∆ = -0.0402
Since both of these differences are within
±0.0040 of -0.0420, the level gain is set.

Techniques Used to Operate the Meter
Reading the Counter and Dial
Turning the dial clockwise increases readings and turning the dial counter-clockwise decreases readings. A
measurement is obtained by reading the counter first and then the dial. There are five digits on the counter. The last
digit of the counter corresponds to 0.10 mGal. Each number on the dial represents 0.10 mGal and should correspond
to the last digit of the counter. Each small division represents approximately 0.01 mGal.

To take measurements turn the dial so that a dial division aligns with the white line. A counter reading of 35623 and
a dial reading of 3 is read as 3562.30 counter units.

If the last digit of the counter and the dial number are not the same, the dial must be removed and repositioned. This
is accomplished by loosening the set screw on the side of the dial and lifting off the dial. Reposition the dial so that
the dial number and the last digit of the counter are the same when aligned with the white line. Retighten the set
screw on the side of the dial.
• Always exercise the dial in both directions before each survey and if the dial has been resting in the
same position for several weeks. This helps to keep the screw and gears working properly.

Nulling the Beam

To unlock the dial, turn the thumbscrew (located above the dial) counterclockwise approximately 2.5 turns until it
stops. Turn the dial until the beam galvo indicates ‘0’. Remove backlash with one dial turn counterclockwise and
approach the reading clockwise (more in detail below). To lock the dial, turn the dial until the zero aligns with the
white line. Turn the thumbscrew clockwise approximately 2.5 turns until it stops.

Removing the Backlash from the Dial

• Removing backlash from the dial is one of the most important things that needs to be done
when operating the gravity meter. This ensures that the dial, counter, and screw mechanism
is true and produces quality gravity readings. This must become a habit for any operator of
the meter. ZLS cannot reiterate this enough.
• To remove backlash, turn the dial one turn counterclockwise (down in counter reading) and approach
the desired counter reading with a clockwise turn of the dial (up in counter reading). You always want
to be moving UP in counter readings; this includes when nulling the beam for meter setups, preparing
for a station reading, etc. Any time the dial is moved, take the backlash out.

23
Observation Methods
The Burris Gravity MeterTM offers two different observation methods for taking a reading. They include the following:
• Single Reading Modes
▪ Stations
▪ Surveys
• Continuous Reading Mode

Single Observation
The Single Observation function is intended to measure gravity difference from place to place, or at discrete time
intervals. There are two types of Single Observations depending on how the data is being collected, Station and
Surveys.
• Station Method
o This method is intended for data collection at a specific station. Observations are recorded under the
station name and are distinguished by date and time intervals. Short surveys can be performed using
the Station Method.
• Survey Method
o This method is intended for surveys with multiple lines and stations. The sequential numbering of
lines and stations is automatically generated by the application and saved under a survey title.

29
Continuous Observation
This function permits continuous measurement of gravity as required for earth-tide observations and secular gravity
studies. The system provides for user selected filtering of the data and user selected data output rates. Theoretical
earth tides are recorded for comparison.

In order to reduce complexity and power consumption the tablet clock is used as a time base, then offset to UTC.
The accuracy of this clock is generally not sufficient enough for long term monitoring of earth tides. There are many
applications requiring continuous observations over a few hours to a few weeks for which this function is useful.

System Calibration and V-Grav Installation

For the highest accuracy, the meter setup procedure and system calibration should be performed periodically. It is
recommended that the setup procedure listed in “Chapter 4: Setting Up the Meter” be done before each survey and
before a Pulse Width Modulation calibration.

The Pulse Width Modulation (Feedback) calibration should be conducted several times a year or before any major
survey campaigns to ensure the highest accuracy of the data.

For the best results, meter setup and calibration should be conducted at a location that is stable and has low seismic
noise of a microGal (μGal) or less if possible.

Calibrate the Pulse Width Modulation (Feedback) Scale Factor

When high accuracy surveys are necessary, the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) (Feedback) scale factor should be
verified. This is done by calibrating the force balance using a range with an established mGal difference of 30 to 50
mGals between two stations. Since this test is to calibrate the PWM only, the dial may be set to any position that
allows the PWM to read at both stations with the dial locked.

Before running the test, be sure that the gravity meter has been on heat for at least 24 hours or more, functioning
properly and that the system switch has been on for at least 30 minutes. Then setup the meter following the
instruction in “Chapter 4: Setting Up the Meter”.

36
Steps
1. Run a short Single Observation survey between two stations that are have a difference of 50 mGals or less.
2. Usually running three or four pairs of points between the two stations is sufficient.
3. Compare the established value between the two stations to the average value results from the test. If there is
an appreciable difference, use the following formula to adjust the Feedback Scale:
𝐸𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑖𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑑 𝑚𝐺𝑎𝑙 𝑉𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒
a. =𝐾 𝐶𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝐹𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝑆𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑒 × 𝐾 = 𝑁𝑒𝑤 𝐹𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝑆𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑒
𝑁𝑒𝑤 𝑇𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑚𝐺𝑎𝑙 𝑉𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒
17.103
b. Ex: = 0.9974921264 9.543819734𝑒 −4 × 0.9974921264 = 9.519885041𝑒 −4
17.146

4. The Feedback Scale is found by:

a. From the V-Grav main menu, tap the Settings button
b. Then tap the Meter Parameters tab
5. Tap on the Feedback Scale text field and enter the New Feedback Scale with the number pad that shows
up. You can delete the existing number by tapping on Clear or  buttons. Be sure to put in the scientific
notation 𝑒 −𝑥 . When you are done entering the value, press Next to get out of the number pad.
6. To verify the PWM Feedback Scale factor, repeat the test and compare the results.

Installing and Restoring V-Grav

For customers with V-Grav Vers. 3.0.0 or newer that have the built in Backup/Restore function, please see
“Addendum A” at the end of this manual for more information.

The tablet is preloaded with V-Grav and a backup solution application called Helium. The tablet should still retain its
software even if the battery is fully discharged. The first thing that needs to be done upon receipt of the system is to back
up V-Grav to a PC running Windows 7 or 10 64-bit.

How to Create a Backup of the Android Device and Restore the V-Grav App
V-Grav is ZLS Corporation's leap into the world of tablets and apps. As the controller for the Burris Gravity Meter™,
V-Grav is custom tailored to work with the associated meter and that meter only. As a proprietary program, the
values working in the background of the app are closed off as soon as it leaves the factory. This means that in the
event of a complete failure of either the software or hardware that forces the user to execute a factory reset or switch
Android devices completely, the V-Grav app, all of its values and control of the Burris Gravity Meter™ will be lost
to the user. This necessitates a backup of the V-Grav app to be maintained at all times to ensure maximum
performance of the gravity meter.

37
Helium is a free app developed by ClockworkMod. It is one of the only solutions for Android users to backup
applications without rooting (jailbreaking) the device. Helium requires a companion PC to work the backup and
restore functions of the app. The PC must be running Windows 7 or 10 64-bit for proper installation and
functionality. Additionally, there must be a wireless network (via wireless router) that the Android device and
companion PC can connect to.

Upon receipt of the Burris Gravity Meter™, the Android tablet that is provided will have the V-Grav and Helium
app already installed.

The ZLS Distribution USB Drive will have the following content in addition to the User's Guide:
1. SN xxx Factory Backup for use with restoration of the V-Grav app
2. Helium.apk for use with the Android device
3. HeliumSetup to install the Helium desktop companion on a PC
4. Samsung USB Driver for the PC to be able to recognize the Android device

The ZLS Distribution USB Drive will contain a backup of V-Grav with its factory settings. As the Burris Gravity
Meter™ is used, the values within the app will change (meter parameters, dial reading) or will be added (user added
stations, single/continuous mode data). Creating a backup will ensure that there is an up-to-date version of the app
so as to not lose any data in the event of a failure.

Installation of Helium Companion and Samsung USB Drivers onto a PC

1. Plug the ZLS Distribution USB Drive into a PC running Windows 7 or 10 64-bit. Let the operating system
download the necessary drivers for it.
2. Go into the USB Drive and double click on HeliumSetup.

Troubleshooting Guide
The Burris Gravity MeterTM has been manufactured and tested with the highest quality standards and techniques. Despite
this fact, there may be instances when a problem will occur. The following section provides some suggestions to help the
user to troubleshoot and if possible, correct the problem.

Burris Gravity MeterTM Will Not Power Up

The BGM is powered with either a 10.8V battery or an external power supply. ZLS provides (2) two 10.8V lithium-
ion batteries with the meter. If the BGM will not power up, it is often a result of a blown fuse, battery, or connection.

Possible Remedies
1. Check to see if the fuse LED is lit; if it is, this indicates that the fuse is blown, and it will need to be replaced.
2. Try removing the battery and then replacing it again. Also try changing the battery with another charged
battery or a new battery.
3. If the meter is powered with the external power supply, check to see if all plugs are securely in place by
unplugging and then plugging them in again.
4. If you have tried all of the above without success, please contact ZLS for assistance.

41
Heater Lights Do Not Cycle On and/or Off
The Burris Gravity MeterTM has multiple heaters to control the temperature of the sensor. There are four heater lights
which will turn on when voltage is being applied to the heater. Under normal temperature conditions the heaters will
cycle on and off. The relationship between the on and off cycles will vary from heater to heater and will change
depending on the ambient temperature. If a heater light is not cycling or staying on all the time, this could indicate a
problem. Typical problems are no power, momentary loss of power, or faulty circuitry.

Possible Remedies
1. Check to see if the fuse LED is lit. If it is lit, this indicates that the fuse is blown, and it will need to be
replaced.
2. Try removing the battery and then replacing it again. Also try changing the battery with another charged
battery or a brand new battery.
3. If the meter is powered with the external power supply, check to see if all plugs are securely in place by
unplugging and then plugging them in again.
4. If you have tried all of the above without success, please contact ZLS for assistance.

Battery Does Not Charge

The BGM is powered in the field with a 10.8V lithium-ion battery. If the meter will not power up when a battery is
installed, then the most common problem is a faulty charger or a dead battery.

Possible Remedies
Charger
1. Make sure the charger is securely plugged in.
2. Try charging another battery to see if the charger is functioning properly.
3. Try calibrating the battery.
4. If you have tried all of the above without success, please refer to the included information literature for more
details regarding the battery charger. If all else fails, please contact ZLS for assistance.
Battery
1. Try charging the battery to see if you receive an error message.
2. Try charging another battery to see if the charger is functioning properly.
3. If the charger is working, then replace the battery.

42
Reading Out of Range
The Burris Gravity MeterTM has a force feedback range of 50 mGals and a worldwide range micrometer screw (dial).
The electrostatic force feedback system will automatically null the beam until it reaches the end of the 50 mGal range.
Once this happens the operator must reset the meter to the next 50 mGal calibrated point.

Out of Feedback Range

1. Check the duty cycle to see if the meter has reached its limits. The lower limit is 5% or below and the upper
limit is 98% or above.
2. If the meter has reached its feedback limit, turn the dial to the next 50 mGal calibrated point.
3. For non-calibrated meters find a place where the meter can read within 5% or 98% of the duty cycle. Take a
reading then turn the dial approximately 25 mGals and take another reading. This will allow the operator to
tie the feedback ranges together. Once the meter has been re-ranged and a new reading taken, the operator
can proceed with the survey.

Beam Galvanometer Stays at One End of the Range

The BGM has a galvanometer (galvo) which indicates the position of the beam. However, sometimes the beam
needle will stay on one side of the galvo. The most common cause for this problem is the meter is out of the feedback
range or the galvo is sticking on the galvo stop. A less common reason for the beam galvo staying on one side is the
beam potentiometer (pot) has reached its adjustment limit. The operator can adjust the zero and the sensitivity of
the galvo needle. Once the operator accessible beam zero has reached it limit, the internal zero pot must be adjusted.

Sticky Galvo Stop

1. For a sticky galvo stop, gently tap on the galvo to release the needle from the stop.
2. If the sticky galvo reaches the point where it is interfering with the reading of the meter, then please return
the meter to ZLS for servicing.
3. Galvos are not field replaceable.

43
Beam Potentiometer (Pot) at Adjustable Limit
1. First level and unclamp the meter. Turn the dial until the beam is on one side of the galvanometer. Set the
duty cycle of the feedback to 50%.
2. Try turning the beam zero pot in one direction about 12 turns to see if the galvo needle will move. If not,
then turn the beam zero pot in the opposite direction about 12 turns.
3. If the beam needle cannot be moved with the zero pot then return the meter to ZLS if it does not have a
beam frequency potentiometer (green pot).
4. If the meter does have a beam frequency pot (green pot), then turn the beam frequency pot in either direction
up to 12 turns or until the galvo needle moves.
5. Once the beam galvo needle is adjustable using the beam frequency pot, set the meter stops outlined in
“Chapter 4: Setting Up the Meter – Meter Stop Setup”.
6. If you have tried all of the above without success please contact ZLS for assistance.

Level Galvanometer Stays at One End of the Range

The Burris Gravity MeterTM has two galvanometers (galvos) which indicate the position of the cross and long levels.
The operator can adjust the zero and the sensitivity of the level galvo needle. However, sometimes a level needle will
stay on one side of the galvo. The most common cause for this problem is a sticky galvo stop. A less common reason
is the level has shifted its position. To zero the level the operator can adjust the zero pot.

Sticky Galvo Stop

1. For a sticky galvo stop, gently tap on the galvo to release the needle from the stop.
2. If the sticky galvo reaches the point where it is interfering with the reading of the meter then please return the
meter to ZLS for servicing.
3. Galvos are not field replaceable.

Level Has Shifted Its Position or Drifted Over Time

1. Please refer to “Chapter 4: Setting Up the Meter – Setting the Level Zero Position / Gain Position” to reset
the level zero and sensitivity (gain).
2. If you have tried all of the above without success, please contact ZLS for assistance.

Reading and Transportation Tips

Tips for Reading the Burris Gravity MeterTM

1. When transporting the gravity meter by automobile during a survey, use foam rubber pads underneath the
gravity meter and against the seat. The foam rubber should not be too stiff or too flimsy. Use foam rubber
between the seat belt buckle and the gravity meter to reduce any unnecessary shocks. Always protect the
gravity meter from vibration during transportation.

2. If the meter’s carrying handle is upright, gently lower it to rest against the side of the meter. Letting a loose
handle fall and hit the meter can possibly cause small tares. The motion of the handle is usually loose and
probably will not stay in the upright position by itself.

3. Be sure to place the gravity meter in the same seat facing the same direction throughout the survey.

4. When changing the dial to your reading point, always turn the dial to the reading point and then turn the dial
counterclockwise 1 dial turn and re-approach the reading clockwise. This will eliminate dial error. Check out
“Chapter 5: Operating the Meter – Removing the Backlash from the Dial” for more details.

5. When transporting a gravity meter between points, it is best to keep it at the ambient temperature. Do not
use the heater or air conditioning in the car.

6. For large differences exceeding 50 mGals when running repeat points in a survey, you can alleviate possible
hysteresis by turning the dial to the next point’s dial reading before transporting the gravity meter to that
point.

7. Always clamp the beam before moving the gravity meter.

46
8. It is best to shade the gravity meter from direct intense sunlight if possible.

9. Take repeat readings at a point by pressing More until the observed gravity reading settles and beam error
and standard deviation are as small as possible. It is preferable to not accept a reading until Standard Deviation
is 0.0050 mGals or less and Beam Error is less than 0.003. Due to environmental noise this may not be
possible in some situations. Use your best judgement on what is acceptable and move on.

10. Never read the gravity meter with the duty cycle/PWM (pulse width modulation) over 98% or under 5%.

11. It is best to keep a gravity meter powered and on heat at all times.

12. If the gravity meter has to be powered down, make sure it has been powered on for at least 24 hours before
using.

13. When the system switch is first turned on, wait approximately 30 minutes before taking a reading. Leave
system switch on for the duration of the daily survey.

14. Do not start a survey until you are satisfied that the drift has stabilized if the gravity meter has been powered
down.

15. Set the Levels before a survey if the gravity meter has not been used for a long period of time. See “Chapter
4: Setting Up the Meter” for instructions.

16. Check the PWM Scale Factor monthly and adjust if necessary; see “Chapter 6: Meter Maintenance and System
Calibration – Calibrate the Pulse Width Modulation (Feedback) Scale Factor” for instructions.

17. Check the gravity meter batteries to make sure that they are functional and can be used for the duration of
the survey. Always take a spare battery in the field for backup.

18. Fully charge the tablet battery before your survey.

19. Even though our gravity meters are rugged, for best results always treat the gravity meter with as much care
as possible. Do not bump, shake, swing, or drop it during a survey.

47
20. Try to avoid running surveys on days with high wind gusts especially in highly wooded areas. Root systems
can make the ground unstable during high winds.

21. Do not read a gravity meter if the beam is hitting the top or bottom beam limits because of high seismic noise.
During high noise, if the beam is NOT hitting the stops, continuous reading mode with appropriate selectable
filter may be used for readings. See “Chapter 5: Operating the Meter – Continuous Observation” for more
details. With a 60 second output coupled with a 10 second filter, readings are measurable after 3 minutes.

22. If the Beam is sticking on a stop, tap the ground near the meter first; first with a pencil or writing utensil then
second with your foot. If that doesn’t release the Beam from a stop or if the galvo needles are sticking, then
VERY GENTLY tap the top of the gravity meter above the galvos to see if it releases.

Tips for Transporting the Burris Gravity MeterTM

1. To ship the gravity meter, it is best to use a cardboard box that will absorb impacts if it is dropped or subjected
to any shocks. If you must use a harder case, be sure to provide adequate foam.

2. Always use 4 - 6 inch (10 - 15 cm) foam on all sides of the gravity meter when shipping. Be sure to isolate
the gravity meter from the other accessories to avoid friction.

3. Add shock or tilt warning devices to indicate rough handling. “This Side Up” arrows are also recommended.

4. Use a reputable carrier that is known to treat high value, sensitive instruments well.

5. Contact ZLS for assistance if you will be shipping lithium-ion batteries.

Filtering
Continuous mode data are filtered with an IIR filter
that emulates three cascaded stages of RC filters with
the selected time constant. The equivalent circuit for
this filter is shown in the following diagram.
• The transfer function for this filter is given by:
𝑒
𝑖
𝑒0 = (1+(𝑇𝐶)𝑠)3
where s is the Laplace Operator.

The analog gravity (feedback force) output is filtered with a passive two stage
RC filter as shown in the next diagram.
1
• The transfer function for this filter is given by: where
0.09 𝑠2 +1.05𝑠+1

s is the Laplace Operator.

In both cases data will be delayed by a time interval equal to the time constant of the filter. The delay will depend on
the selected time constant for the digital filter. The delay will be 0.6 sec for the analog filter.

Note: All specifications will vary from meter to meter and with gain and zero settings. Specifications are subject to
change without notice.

V-Grav Version 3.0.0 Update

Due to increased privacy and security measures introduced in Android 10 and 11 by Google, certain legacy apps no longer
work. Unfortunately, the Helium Backup app no longer works on Android 10 and 11 so a new robust and bespoke backup
and restore method had to be implemented. Crucially, the new method had to be a part of the V-Grav app so there is not
a reliance on a separate third party app for backup and restore.

New Updates
• Backup and Restore Data
o A new and quick way to backup and restore data from within the app.
o See when the last backup was made and quickly restore from a previously created backup file.
• Amaze File Manager
o A new file manager that works around the new security measures of Android 10 and 11.

Installing and Restoring V-Grav

The tablet is preloaded with V-Grav. The first thing that needs to be done upon receipt of the system is to backup V-Grav
to a PC running Windows 7 or 10 64-bit. The tablet should still retain its software even if the battery is fully discharged.

How to Create a Backup of the Android Device and Restore the V-Grav App
As the controller for the Burris Gravity Meter™, V-Grav is custom tailored to work with the associated meter and
that meter only. As a proprietary program, the values working in the background of the app are closed off as soon
as it leaves the factory. This means that in the event of a complete failure of either the software or hardware that
forces the user to execute a factory reset or switch Android devices completely, the V-Grav app, all of its values and
control of the Burris Gravity Meter™ will be lost to the user. This necessitates a backup of the V-Grav app to be
maintained at all times to ensure maximum performance of the gravity meter.

52
Upon receipt of the Burris Gravity Meter™, the Android tablet that is provided will have the V-Grav app and the
Amaze File Manager app already installed.

The ZLS Distribution USB Drive will have the following content in addition to the User’s Guide:
1. V-Grav_Version_3.0.0.apk a copy of the V-Grav app
2. SN xxx Factory Backup.zls for use with restoration of the System Data and Parameters
3. Amaze_3.6.5.apk for use as a basic file manager that deals with the increased privacy and
security measures found on Android 10 and 11

The ZLS Distribution USB Drive will contain a backup of the System Data and Parameters of V-Grav as it left our
factory. As the Burris Gravity Meter™ gets used, the values within the app will change (meter parameters, dial
reading) or will be added (user added stations, single/continuous mode data, etc.). Creating a backup will ensure that
there is an up-to-date copy of the V-Grav parameters so as to not lose any data in the event of a failure.

Creating a Backup of V-Grav System Data and Parameters

1. On the Home Screen of the V-Grav app, tap Options, then tap the tab called Backup and Restore Data.
2. Check the box next to System Data and Parameters then tap the button Backup Data to File.
3. A small dialogue box at the bottom of the screen should say “File write complete.”.
a. This process creates two files. Both have the same name but one is a .zls file and the other is a .txt
file. The .zls file is used in the Restore function while the .txt file is a text log of what was backed up
in the corresponding .zls file.
b. The two files can be found under Android/data/com.zlscorp.ultragrav2/files when using File
Explorer on Windows or Amaze File Manager on the tablet.

of the screen will pop up and say “File read complete.”.

Amaze File Manager – Vers. 3.6.5

With increased security measures implemented by Google for Android 10 and 11, Samsung’s own My Files app no
longer allows access to certain parts of the tablet’s internal storage. While V-Grav is designed to work from within
without any third party apps necessary, ZLS felt that access to the .zls and .txt backup files would be a good feature
to have just in case a customer needed it.

Access Files Using Amaze File Manager

1. Open Amaze app
2. Tap on the triple line button in the top left corner.
3. Tap on “Internal Storage” to get to the root directory of the tablet.
4. Tap on “Android” folder, then “data”.
a. After this, a message box will appear talking about the Android 10 restrictions that have been imposed.
b. Tap “OK” to continue.
5. Scroll down to the bottom of the next screen and tap “com.zlscorp.ultragrav2” then tap “files”.
a. Once that folder opens, tap on “Use this folder” at the bottom of the screen.
b. Tap “Allow” after the message box appears to gain complete access to the .zls and .txt backup files.

From here, a user can access the .txt files that are associated with their corresponding .zls file to see exactly what was
backed up.

55
Potential Data Loss and Prevention
Although V-Grav now has a new and quick way of backing up and restoring data, this feature is not a replacement of good
practices of exporting observational data on a frequent basis. Some of the potential loss of data is explained briefly in a
message box that appears after tapping the Restore Data from File button:

Confirm Potential Data Overwrite

The datasets in the restore file will overwrite the same datasets currently in the app. Also, restoring Surveys
will overwrite any Observations in the app. Please confirm that you want to continue.

In other words, a .zls file is a snapshot of all datasets in the app when it was backed up. If new data was acquired after that
backup and then the app is restored to a previous .zls file, then all new data will be overwritten and deleted. Here is a
hypothetical example:

Observer 1: Takes the meter out and goes out on a weeklong survey campaign. The observer gathers a substantial
number of observations but does not have the time to get to a computer to export this data for post data processing.
The observer makes a backup file just in case the tablet experiences a catastrophic failure. Observer 1 gets into the
office the next day and exports all survey data and starts post processing.

Observer 2: Two weeks after Observer 1 took the meter out to the field, Observer 2 takes the meter out for a single
mode station-to-station campaign. In the field for only 8 hours, Observer 2 feels that a backup is not necessary and
will do an export of data tomorrow once back at the office.

Observer 1: After two weeks of post data processing, Observer 1 feels that more data needs to be collected.
Observer 1 then takes the meter out into the field very early in the morning for a full day of taking readings. Observer
1 wants to ensure the meter is in the state that it was two weeks ago, so a restoration of the backup that was made
two weeks ago is done. Observer 1 does not realize that Observer 2’s data is in the tablet and that it was not exported
for post processing so Observer 1’s restoration deletes the station-to-station data points taken by Observer 2.

The main thing to take away is that all data must be exported to prevent any data loss. Good practice is to at the very least
go into Output Observation Data and save the data to a .csv file on the tablet. This takes the data out of the V-Grav
program and copies it elsewhere. Another way to look at it: Backup is for parameters; Export is for observational data.
