Concept Lesson:
Epicenter of an Earthquake
Background: On October 17, 1989 at 5:04 P.M., a major earthquake struck the San
Francisco Bay area. The earthquake was nicknamed the World Series Earthquake because it
occurred just before a World Series baseball game was scheduled to begin in Candlestick Park
(officially called the Loma Prieta earthquake though). Millions of people witnessed the motion of
the earthquake on television. Sixty seven people lost their lives,
 Damage and
from the property
earthquake was damage
widespread,was
estimated at $6 billion. but the actual location of the earthquake (the
epicenter) was reported almost immediately.
With damage all around, how could geologists
accurately identify the epicenter of the
earthquake?

Earthquake Location by Triangulation:

Seismograph P-wave time S-wave time Time Lag (sec) Epicenter Distance Map
(km) Distance (cm)

BATANGAS 44.8
Puerto Princesa 9:04:00 9:04:22
Davao 38.4
The map on the front page of this handout will be used to locate the epicenters of five different earthquakes, using the process
of triangulation. a) Calculate the time lag in seconds for each of the seismograph stations in the five tables below b) Calculate the
distance from the epicenter for each seismograph station, using the math equation A. c) Calculate the map distances using equation
B. Eq. A. Distance from epicenter = time lag / 8 seconds x 100Km eq. B Map distance = distance from epicenter/ 200 Km x
1.5 cm d) Using a ruler, set the distance between a compass point and a compass pencil at a distance equal to the map distance.
Insert the compass point in the appropriate city on the map, and draw a circle. e) Use the triangulation method to pinpoint the
epicenter of each earthquake on the map.

Understanding Check:
1. How many seismograph stations are
needed to locate the epicenter of an
earthquake?
a. 1 b. 2 c. 3 d. 4

2. Where is the epicenter for this

earthquake located based on
triangulation?
a. A b. B c. C d. D
3. What happens to lag time the further
you are from the epicenter?
a. Increases b. Decreases
