Al Itihad School Work sheet Name:

Grade Nine Galvanic cell

A group of grade nine student intend to build Al- Zn Galvanic cell, Knowing that
Aluminum is more reactive than zinc. For this purpose the following materials are
available.

- Two beakers
- Strips of zinc and aluminum
- Solutions of zinc sulfate (Zn2+ + SO 24− ) and Aluminum sulfate (Al3+ + SO 24− )
- Salt bridge containing sodium nitrate (Na+ + NO 3− ) as an electrolyte.
- Connecting wires and voltmeter.

1- Aluminum strip is the anode and zinc strip is the cathode. Justify.
2- Write the steps that allow the students to build this Galvanic cell.
3- Sketch the above Galvanic cell and label the anode, cathode, solutions.
4- Write the anode half reaction and the cathode half reaction.
5- Deduce the overall reaction.
6- Specify the substance that is oxidized and the substance that is reduced.
7- Specify the oxidant and the reductant.
8- Indicate the direction of electrons flow.
9- Indicate the direction of the electric current.

10- Indicate the direction of migration of the cations and anions in the salt bridge.

11-What is the role of the salt bridge in the Galvanic cell.

12-What happens if the salt bridge is removed?

13-How does the mass of Al-strip and the Zn-strip vary with time when the cell function.

14-The quantity of Al3+ ions increases with time in the anode half-cell. Justify.

15- The quantity of Zn2+ ions decreases in the cathode half-cell. Justify.

16- What generates the electric energy in the cell?

17- Give a written representation of the Al-Zn Galvanic cell.
