Seminar 2. Working on a Lesson Plan

Materials: Celce-Murcia coursebook

Task I. Choosing the activities. (15 min)

Work in pairs or small groups. There are a lot of reading activities described on the pages: 161-
165, 198-203. Look through the pages and see if there are some suitable activities for your lesson
plan. Discuss with your partner (-s).

Task II. Starting planning your lesson plan (15 min)

On page 197 there are pre, while and post stages of a reading lesson are described. Look through
this page and see how it applies to your lesson plan. Adapt what is necessary for your LP.

Task III. Building up your LP (40 min)

Make all necessary changes to your LP. Decide on materials, level, activities, procedures, timing.
Think of anticipated problems and possible solutions to them. Write clear objectives and
instructions.

Aim: Use pictures to help you understand a text

15 min Pre-reading T asks two questions to tap prior ss’ knowledge (Ex.1):

1. Which perfumes and fragrances can you name?

2. What different types of products use fragrances?

T asks ss to read the Reading tips on ‘how to use pictures to help you
understand a text’ (Ex.2a).

T asks ss to look at the text and pictures, and answer the following
questions (Ex.2b):

1. Where do you think the text comes from - an encyclopedia, a magazine


or a history book?

2. What is it about?

3. What information do you think it includes?

10 min During T asks ss to read the text and decide if each sentence is correct or
reading incorrect. If the provided sentences are correct, ss write C. If they are
incorrect, ss write I. (Ex.3)

T asks ss which tips they used for help with exercises 2b and 3.

12-13 Post-reading T asks ss to answer the following questions:

1. Which facts in the article surprised you? Why?
2. Should fragrances be banned in some public places? If so, which?

T gives homework for ss and explains how to do it.
