I. INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Instructional materials are powerful tools for enhancing teaching and

learning. Their effectiveness for being beneficial to learners is mostly decided

both their quality and adequacy. As an outcome, adequacy and relevancy affect

teaching quality, which benefits student' positively associated with academic

success. These instructional materials being utilized to assure that the topic is

successfully delivered; as a result, they must be creative, educational, and even

adaptable enough to be updated or changed.

Textual learning materials are employed in the teaching and learning

process as alternatives to traditional materials. They're important since they point

out the greatest approaches for students to learn. They also provide clarification

of the idea being taught to the students. Alternative Delivery Modes (ADMs) as

well as Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs) are two of them.

Alternative Delivery Modes (ADMs) are non-traditional education

programs recognized by Department of Education (DepEd) that employ a

dynamic learning approach and a curricular delivering program that incorporates

non-formal and informal sources of information and skills. This can involve using

facilitator-assisted and participatory self-instructional printed or audio-based

learning materials, video cassettes, face-to-face organized learning group, semi-

structured and unstructured talks, one-on-one sessions, group study and self-

learning groups, demonstrations sessions, home visits, mentorship, and

remediation.

In order to accomplish Education for All (EFA), the Philippine educational

system enhanced its Alternative Delivery Modes (ADMs) through 2011. This

Alternative Delivery Mode of Instruction was developed to help underprivileged

students and students on the verge of dropping out improve their academic

performance and overcome economic and social obstacles to education

(Department of Education, 2011; Philippines ADMs Evaluation Philippines,

2012). This provided more important and suitable learning opportunities for

elementary students. The introduction of Alternative Delivery Modes in into

Philippine Educational System, on the other hand, makes it more difficult for

certain students to meet the national standards outlined in the materials, leading

to poor performance. Furthermore, because ADMs were not permitted to conduct

traditional face-to-face classes even during COVID-19 pandemic, classes were

moved to home-based learning.

Home-based learning occurs online using online education and learning.

However, due to poor and unpredictable internet connections, shifting to online

teaching and learning can be challenging in some areas, specifically in the

BARMM's remote areas. As a result, as part of its Education Continuity Plan, the

MBHTE-BARMM used Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs) including alternate

modes of learning.

Adaptive Learning Materials(ALMs) are written materials that were not

designed for teaching but have a sufficient level of difficulty to be employed in a

classroom setting. These Adaptive Learning Materials tools originally designed in

Bangsamoro for Bangsamoro learners. They offer individualized learning that

seeks to engage each student by providing efficient, effective, and personalized

learning paths. The Ministry of Basic Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE)

set the following characteristics for these ALMs: easy, simple, activity-based,

engaging, cost-effective; use materials found at houses; strengthen family

relations; start encouraging coordination and interaction; should relate to real -

life setting; and, home-based learning (Talicop, 2020).Thus, the Adaptive

Learning Materials’ (ALMs) effectiveness in enhancing the BARMM’S DepEd

science teachers and students’ performances is the focus of this study.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to find out the effectiveness ofAdaptive Learning Materials

in enhancing performances of DepEd science teachers and students.

Specifically, it answers the following questions:

1. What is the teaching performance of the DepEd science teachers in using:

a. Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs); and,

b. Alternative Delivery Mode (ADMs)?

2. What are the pre-test and post-test performances of the science students

under:

a. Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs); and,

b. Alternative Delivery Mode (ADMs)?

3. Is there a significant difference in the mean gain scores between the

students under the Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs) and under the

Alternative Delivery Mode (ADMs)?

4. Is there a significant difference in the performances between the teachers

under the Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs) and under the Alternative

Delivery Mode (ADMs)?

5. What are the problems encountered by the teachers under the:

a. Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs); and,

b. Alternative Delivery Mode (ADMs)?

6. What are the perceptions of students in using:

a. Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs); and,

b. Alternative Delivery Mode (ADMs)?

Scope of the Study

The study focused to determine the effectiveness of Adaptive Learning

Materials (ALMs) in enhancing performances of DepEd science teachers and

students in science subject of Grade 6 at Dapiawan Central Elementary School

this third grading period in this school year 2021-2022.

The lessons in this research were from the 6th week of their third grading

period. The following are the objectives of the lesson simple machines: describe

a simple machine, identify different types of simpler machines, and explain how

simple machines work.

Significance of the Study

This study was undertaken primarily due to the significance of its empirical

findings, which show measures of performance improvement of DepEd science

teachers and students. The findings will be used to assist the government,

particularly the MBHTE-BARMM administrator, in implementing Adaptive

Learning Materials (ALMs) as an essential tool for science learning. Furthermore,

this study provides relevant information to school administrators on how to

address problems encountered by teachers and students when using Adaptive

Learning Materials (ALMs). This gives science teachers deeper insights and

corrective measures in use of Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs), resulting in a

more effective and realistic direction. Furthermore, as demonstrated by the

Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs), this study assists students in developing

problem-solving skills as well as scientific attitudes. As a result, effective material

utilization will improve their performance. Nevertheless, this study provides future

researchers with a foundation for adapting or improving the teaching - learning

process.

Definition of Terms

For clarity of meaning, the following definitions are provided based on their

use in the study.

Alternative Learning Materials refer to a type of textual learning materials that

are used in teaching and learning process, these materials include Adaptive

Learning Materials (ALMs) and Alternative Delivery Modes (ADMs).

Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs) refer to textual materials that were not

designed for teaching but have a high enough level of difficulty to be used

in a classroom setting. These alternative learning materials were created

locally for Bangsamoro students. They offer personalized learning that aims

to engage each student by offering efficient, effective, and personalized

learning paths.

Alternative Delivery Modes (ADMs) refer to non-traditional education programs

recognized by Department of Education (DepEd) that use a diverse learning

philosophy as well as a curricular delivery program non-formal and informal

sources of knowledge and skills.

Teachers' Performances refer to a teacher's output during the school year that

reflected in the level of student development attained, as well as the

teachers' level of delivery on the subject taught.

Students' Performance refer to student performance on coursework-related

tests as well as student performance on other forms of exams. It is also

pertaining to the students’ gained score from test result.

Instructional Materials pertain to materials used throughout the teaching-

learning process, such as modules.

DepEd Science Teachers pertain to the teachers who teach science which use

Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs) or an Alternative Delivery Mode

(ADMs).

Learning refers to acquisition of knowledge and skills though the Modular

Instructional such like Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs) as well as

Alternative Delivery Modes (ADMs).

Experimental group refer to group of students who were exposed to two types

of learning materials the Adaptive Learning Materials (ALMs) and

Alternative Delivery Modes (ADMs).

Studentsrefer to students who are studying science which use Adaptive

Learning Materials (ALMs) and an Alternative Delivery Mode (ADMs).
