Questions on Strain Energy

Q.1 (a) Define Resilience, Proof Resilience and Modulus of Resilience.

(b) Derive an expression for equivalent load in impact loading.
Q.2 An object of 100 N weight falls by gravity a vertical distance of 5 m, when it is suddenly stopped by
a collar at the end of a vertical rod of length 10 m and diameter 20 mm. The top of the bar is rigidly
fixed. Calculate the maximum stress and strain induced in the bar due to impact. Take E = 200 GN/m2
for the material of the rod.
Q.3 An unknown weight falls through a height of 10 mm on a rigidly attached to the lower end of a
vertical bar 5 m long and 600 mm2 in section. If the maximum extension of the rod is to be 2 mm, what
is the corresponding stress and magnitude of the unknown weight? Take E = 200GN/m2.
Q.4 A vertical compound member fixed rigidly at its upper end consists of a steel rod 2.5 m long and 20
mm diameter placed within an equally long brass tube 21 mm internal diameter and 30 mm external
diameter. The rod and tube are fixed together at the ends. The compound member is then suddenly
loaded in the tension by a weight of 10 kN falling through a height of 3 mm on to a flange fixed to its
lower end. Calculate the maximum stress in steel and brass. Given: Es = 200 GPa and Eb = 100 GPa.
Q.5 A bar 50 cm long has 1.5 cm2 cross section area for 30 cm of its length and 1 cm2 for the remaining
length. If a load of 50 N falls on the collar which is provided at one end of the rod, the other end being
fixed, from a height of 3 cm, find the maximum stress induced in the bar. E = 200 GN/m2.
Q.6 A vertical tie fixed rigidly at the top consists of a steel rod 3.5 m long and 25 mm diameter encased
throughout in a brass tube 25 mm internal diameter and 35mm external diameter. The casing and the rod
are fixed together at the both ends. The compound rod is suddenly loaded in tension by weight of 15 kN
falling through 5mm before being arrested by the tie. Determine the maximum stresses in the steel and
brass. Given: Es = 200GPa and Eb = 100GPa. (kuk MOS 2018)
Q.7 A bar 3.2 m long and 16 mm in diameter, hangs vertically and has a collar attached at the lower end.
Determine the maximum stress induced when a weight of 80 kg falls from a height of 320 mm on the
collar.
If the bar is turned down to half the diameter along half of its length, what will be the value of the
maximum stress and the extension? E = 205 GPa. (kuk MOS 2017)
Q.8 A beam simply supported over a span of 3 m carries a UDL of 20kN/m over the entire span. Taking
EI= 2.25MN/m2, determine the deflection at the center of the beam.
Q.9 Using Castigliano’s theorem (Using Energy Method), determine the deflection of the free end of the
cantilever beam shown in figure. Take EI = 4.9 MN/m2.
