INFORMAL INVITATIONS AND REPLIES


Informal invitations are sent for personal occasions. The main characteristics of an
informal invitation are:
(a) It is written in the first person (I/We).
(b) The date of writing the invitation is given (but there is no need to write the
year).
(c) The salutation is Dear + name.
(d) The complimentary close is Yours sincerely.
(e) Various tenses of the verb are used unlike the formal invitation.
(f) The invitation does not ask for a reply as in the formal invitation. However, it
is polite to reply to the invitation.
(g) The vocabulary is less formal.

SAMPLE INVITATIONS

1. Mr. and Mrs. R. Vaidyanathan of 27, Appletree Orchard, Mangalore, have


decided to have a party on the occasion of the twenty-first birthday of their
son, Rahul Vaidyanathan. Write the invitation giving details of the date, time,
and venue. Do not exceed 50 words.

REPLYING TO INFORMAL INVITATIONS
It is an essential courtesy to reply to an invitation.

Points to Remember:
(a) The layout of a reply to an informal invitation is also informal like the
invitation.
(b) The reply is written in the first person. The salient points in the reply to an
informal invitation are:

(i) acknowledge the invitation


(ii) mention acceptance/refusal (it is essential to give a reason for
refusing an invitation)
(iii) mention event, day, date, time/ venue
(iv) use warm and simple language

(c) FORMAT - Informal letter of acceptance (Sender's address, Salutation.


Complimentary close, Name)

SAMPLE REPLY (DECLINING INVITATION)

neighbour, Priyanka to a party on the occasion of the twenty-first birthday of their
