Quantitative data is data represented numerically, including anything that can be counted
or measured. It allows the researcher to discover whether an IV has affected a DV. In the
study Piliavin et al. Subway Samatrian the quantitative data was time taken for the first
passenger to help and the total number of people who helped in different conditions.

Qualitative data is data representing information that can not be counted or measured and
is not represented by numbers, it ussually describes how a person experianced the
situation. It is often gathered from interviews, self-reports, case studys, observations and so
on. It allows the researcher to better understand the quantitative data. In the study Piliavin
et al. Subway Samatrian the qualitative data was the comments made by passengers which
helped the researchers better understand how the factors influenced the results.
