Report on the AI evolution seminar

On 13 November 2023, the administration of our school “Hestim” organized a seminar about
AI’s Evolution in the multipurpose room.

The pedagogical event was aimed at students, professors, doctoral candidates and researchers.
Besides, 100 people approximately attented the seminar. The activities included a presentation by
the keynote speaker : Dr.Kaoutar El maghraoui and a discussion.

The seminar offered a profound exploration of the dynamic landscape of artificial intelligence
(AI), highlighting its disruptive potential and the substantial surge in adoption since 2017.
Significantly, the role of deep learning in propelling advancements was emphasized, particularly in
shaping AI generative modeling and witnessing the fascinating emergence of Creative AI. Attendees
gained invaluable insights into the ongoing revolution in the AI domain, marked by substantial
returns on investment. The historical trajectory of AI was meticulously traced, encompassing its
inception, challenges faced during the AI winter, subsequent renaissance, and the current epoch
dominated by deep learning and artificial general intelligence. Detailed insights were shared on
Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPT), with a specific focus on OpenAI's ChatGPT 3.5. The
discussion delved into the critical importance of data representations in AI, spanning the evolution
from expert systems to classical machine learning and deep learning. Foundation models, including
their evolution from the transformer architecture to ChatGPT, were thoroughly elucidated, along
with comprehensive explanations of training methods such as self-supervision and fine-tuning.
Beyond Natural Language Processing, the seminar underscored the diverse applications of
foundation models in Industry 4.0, geospatial analysis, and groundbreaking achievements in
chemistry, particularly in molecular research. Emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between
generative AI and foundation models as integral building blocks for innovation, the seminar also
addressed challenges, including the escalating compute requirements of foundation models and the
pressing need for efficient, trusted AI. In conclusion, the remarks urged a nuanced approach to
tackle these challenges while embracing the rapid and transformative advancements unfolding in
the AI landscape, drawing on the latest data and insights available.

In my opinion, the seminar was highly insightful, offering a comprehensive overview of AI's
evolution, current trends, and applications. Covering key topics like deep learning, generative AI,
and foundation models, it provided a well-rounded perspective on the field. The inclusion of real-
world applications and acknowledgment of challenges suggests a practical approach. Overall, it was
an engaging and valuable event for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of AI's current
landscape.
