Who won the battle Of Hastings in 1066?

When Edward the confessor died in 1066, and there was no heir to the throne four men (Earl Harold
Godwinson from England, Edgar the Atheling also from England, Duke William of Normandy from
France and King Harald Hardrada from Norway) wanted to be king. Godwinson was chosen because
he had all the qualities needed. However, Harald and William were not happy about that, so they
started a battle, the battle of Hastings. At first Godwinson beat Harald’s army but after William and
his army attacked, William had won the battle.

There were 4 main reasons why William won the battle which are luck, William’s leadership,
William’s army and Harold’s army.

Firstly, William had luck on his side, he was lucky because the wind had changed direction so he
could set sail. If the wind hadn’t changed then Harold’s army would have reached Pevensy bay
(where the battle was held) before William so he would have lost all the time to get archers, cavalry,
armourers and fletchers and prepare for the battle. He was also lucky because Harold’s army had
already fought a battle in the north so they would be tired from that battle and from walking all that
long distance and they would not be fighting their best.

Secondly, William’s leadership played a big part in why his army won. For example, he told the
Normans to run down to the sea to trick the Saxons into thinking they had won when actually they
were bringing the Saxons closer so they were easier to fight off and kill, which was really smart.
Also, when a rumour went around that William was dead, William had ridden around all over the
battlefield to prove that he was alive, and he showed his face from underneath his helmet to raise
attention and stop his army from panicking. And when he had tripped up in the sand, instead of
being embarrassed he picked up a fist of sand and held it high and said that he was now King of
England and would defend it with his blood which showed he was a strong leader and wouldn't give
up.

Another reason William had one the battle was because Harold’s army was struggling, they had lost
many soldiers in their first battle and they hadn't had any time to pick up more supplies or soldiers
and they were very tired. Also when William had tricked them to run down the hill there was so
much noise that when Harold was shouting at the Saxons to tell them to stay on their hill, so that
they wouldn't be defeated, no one could hear him and the Saxons ran downhill anyway in confusion.
The last reason why William won was because of his army. They were ultimately the ones who
defeated the Saxons because they had killed Harold with an arrow in his eye (or so the legend says).
They also followed out the commands of their leader William perfectly.

Personally, I think the most important factor of why he won was luck. He had lots of people to
produce supplies and help on the battlefield which Harold just didn’t have and he had loads of time
to think about his plan of action which was extremely important.
